Chapter 6

We came to a heavy metal door with a big red sign that said 'Employees Only.' He opened the door and gestured for me to follow him. We walked up two flights of stairs and came to another door. Once he opened the door, I was temporarily blinded by the bright light outside. Then I realized we were on the roof. He walked passed me further out into the open and amused himself by doing a cartwheel. I just laughed and wandered over to the edge of the building, looking around at the incredible view. It was beautiful up here. I could see the Empire State building.

"How's this for something to do?" he yelled above the noise of the wind from across the roof. I couldn't help grinning like a opossum.

"This is amazing," I smiled at him.

He walked across the helipad to the opposite side so I turned back to what I was looking at before. I got lost in the peacefulness of being way up here with an amazing view and perfect weather. I just felt free. It was so calming. I felt a hand on my back and turned slightly to see Tyler standing next to me. He moved his hand off me and rested his body against the railing.

"I like to do this a lot to think," he said, looking out at the skyline. "I love going to building rooftops and just chillin'. It feels good."

"It's beautiful up here," I said, watching the cloud pass overhead.

"Yeah..." he looked at me. "Yeah it is..."

Naturally my mind wandered to thinking that this would be a perfect spot for a first kiss and I found myself looking at his lips. When I realized what I was staring at, and that he noticed to, I blushed and turned away to hide it. He covered my hand with his on the railing.

"You okay?" he asked quietly.

"Yeah. Great," I said, still looking the opposite direction.

"Look at me," he said quietly, leaning slightly closer to me.I hesitantly turned to face him.

"Hi," I smiled, somewhat embarrassed.

"Hey," he smiled back at me.

His eyes... damn, I could get lost in his eyes forever.

"Olivia, I..." of course my phone had to ring right then.

He let out a heavy sigh and turned back to looking at the buildings. I yelled a million curse words in my head and then felt super guilty when I saw Cameron's name on my phone.

"Yo," I answered, trying to hear over the wind.

"Hey baby, we're done rehearsing. We're gonna order pizzas at the venue. Do you wanna come hang with us?" Cameron asked.

I looked back at Tyler who didn't seem to be paying any attention but I could tell he was a little upset that my phone rang.

"Um... hang on a sec," I said and covered the phone with my hand.

"Are you up for pizza?" I asked Tyler.

"Didn't we just eat?" he gave me a goofy smile.

"Well I'm being offered pizza," I laughed.

"Oh sure, why not?" he chuckled.

I put the phone back up to my ear."Cam?" I asked.

"Yeah babe?"

"Can I bring a friend?"

"Uh, sure, I guess," he said.

"Okay. I'll see you in about twenty minutes."

"Great. I love you babe."

"You too," I said and hung up.

I always told him 'I love you too' but for some reason I felt uncomfortable saying that with Tyler a few feet away. I turned back to him.

"Ready to roll?"

"Yeah," he smiled. We headed back to his room so he could get his phone and then went down to his SUV again.

"Thanks for the roof thing," I said, smiling at him as I watched him turn the steering wheel. "I really enjoyed that."

"Me too," he flashed me a gorgeous smile and pulled onto the main road."You didn't tell me where we're going..." he said laughing.

"Highline," I answered.

"Ballroom?"

"Yeah."

"Oh, I'm going there tonight anyway," he said.

That hit me funny. I wondered if he was a fan of Cameron's band or something. It didn't take us very long to get to the venue and he parked right next to David's band's van. I wondered why David was here already. I thought they wouldn't be here til later. Tyler cut the engine and before I could unbuckle my seatbelt, he put his hand over mine on the console. I looked up at him questioningly.

"Can I ask you something?" he asked, not really looking at me.

"Fire away."

"When we were on the roof..." he swallowed and still wouldn't look at me.

"Yeah?"

"Did um... did you wanna... kiss me?" his eyes finally met mine. He looked hesitant and hopeful.

"Tyler... I uh..."

I heard a car horn go off. Saved by the horn! I really didn't wanna have to tell him I had a boyfriend. He took a deep breath and moved his hand from mine. I noticed David walking toward us. Tyler got out and gave David a smile.

"What's up bro?" Tyler said. Wait... they know each other?

"Been wondering where you ran off too. I haven't seen you all morning," David answered. "Hey Liv."

I returned David's smile and followed them into the building. We walked into the dressing room where everyone was loading up on pizza. Cameron gave me a weird look when I walked in with Tyler's arm around my waist. I lightly pushed it away and he didn't seem to mind. I think he was more focused on the food. I watched Tyler go strike up a conversation with Martin, like they were best friends. Huh. I guess he's friends with David's band. David was talking to Zach about changing up tonight's set list so tonight's show would be somewhat different than last night's for any audience members who were seeing both shows. I decided now was an okay time to interrupt.

I tapped David's shoulder. "Hey David?"

"Yeah?" he turned to me with a cute smile.

"Can I borrow you for a sec?" I asked, nodding to the hallway.

David looked back to Zach and Zach just shrugged.

"Sure," David said, following me into the hall. "What's up?"

"I didn't know you and Tyler were friends," I said.

He cocked an eyebrow and then realization hit him."Oh!" he said with an 'it just hit me!' look on his face. "I never introduced you guys last night!"

"Actually we met at the hotel last night," I said, kinda confused.

"Oh. Well he left the venue early last night. Upset stomach or something. I don't know," David shrugged.

"Left the venue?" I frowned. "I thought yall's lead singer..." and then it clicked.

"Tyler is our lead singer," David said, giving me a confused look.

"I'm an idiot," I laughed.

I should've figured that out when they met up in the parking lot.

"He didn't tell you?" David questioned, still looking confused.

"No. He said we was coming here tonight but I figured he was attending the concert, not playing it."

"He's a bit of an idiot sometimes," David laughed. "C'mon, I'm hungry."

We walked back into the room as Cameron was walking out.

"Where ya going?" I asked as he passed me, our shoulders brushing against each other.

"I need some air," he mumbled and continued on his way.

He must be in one of his moods again. I just left him alone.

I ended up staying there, hanging out with the guys until sound check. I watched David's band run through a couple songs from the side of the stage. I studied the way Tyler moved around the stage and the way he sang. He looked so happy and content with what he was doing. It made me feel good to see him having a good time. I guess I hadn't paid much attention to him last night during the show. I was mostly focused on watching David throughout their set.

I listened to Tyler end the chorus of their last practice song. Now I understand why his voice sounded familiar when he was singing in the car earlier. They ended sound check and I stood to the side of the doorway as each of the boys exited the stage, followed by Cameron's band filing onto the stage for their sound check. I put my arm in from of Tyler as he passed me, stopping him. He turned to me with a smile.

"You didn't tell me you were in this band," I said, giving him a funny look.

"You didn't tell me you knew my band," he replied, smirking.

"I didn't know who the heck you were. You bailed last night before I could meet you. David said you were sick or something."

"Hey I'm also out of the loop here since nobody introduced us," he chuckled, gesturing for me to walk with him down the hall. "Are you friends with David?"

I gave him a weird look. "You don't know how I know these guys, do you?" I laughed.

"Nobody told me. All I know is you all somehow know each other," he shrugged, pushing the exit door open.I followed him across the parking lot.

"I'm Cameron's girlfriend," I clarified.

His walking seemed to pause for a split second but he shrugged it off and continued to the van grabbing an extension cord.

"Girlfriend?" he asked, shutting the van door.

"Yeah," I said, feeling kinda uncomfortable again.

"Cameron Hovland?" he frowned.

"Yeah..."

"Oh," he began walking back to the building. "You didn't tell me you had a boyfriend."

"I'm sorry," I said, not looking at him.

"It's cool," he shrugged.

He opened the door for me and we wandered back down the hall. Cameron's band was still sound checking. I glanced to the stage to see Cameron fiddling with the tuning on his bass. He didn't notice me. Tyler was talking to Martin and fishing for a drink in the mini fridge. We had two hours til show time. I figured I'd take a walk around the outside of the venue, with nothing else to do. The weather was nice at least. It was cloudy outside and I love cloudy weather.

I made my way down the hall and out the door and began my journey through the parking lot and around the side of the building. I wasn't familiar with this side of town and it looked kind of dangerous but there didn't seem to be many people out so I continued on wandering around. I got to the end of the next block when I heard footsteps running behind me. It kinda freaked me out at first but I turned to see David catching up to me.

"You really... shouldn't... be out here... alone," he said, trying to catch his breath. He leaned over and put his hands on his knees.

"I had nothing else to do so I figured I'd take a walk," I shrugged.

"Well your boyfriend isn't too thrilled that you left by yourself," he breathed out heavily. "And I think I just got enough exercise for the year."

I laughed. "Looks like it."

"Let's go back before the hobos kill us," he chuckled, putting an arm around my waist as we turned around to head back to the venue.

"Where the fuck did you go?!" Cameron yelled as David and I entered the building. Great. He's pissed.

"I just took a walk. No big deal," I answered, trying to shrug it off.

"In this part of town?!"

"Cam, everything's fine," David said, giving him a look that I read as 'why are you acting like this?'

"Oh, fine? Sure. Whatever," Cameron threw his hands up, turning to go back to the stage.

I just stood there. I didn't know what to do. I didn't wanna be around Cameron if he was gonna try to fight right now but I couldn't leave the venue. I glanced at David. He was just standing there with his back against the wall and his arms crossed, staring at the floor. He cleared his throat.

"Does he do that often?" he said in almost a whisper. His eyes met mine and he looked almost sad.

"Honestly?" I sighed.

"Please," he nodded.

"Yeah," I mumbled, looking down. "Too often."

"You guys argue a lot?"

"Like you wouldn't believe."

I felt him wrap his arms around me and rest his chin on top of my head. I leaned my body into his and returned the hug. He rubbed circles on my back and released a heavy sigh.

"I'm here," he whispered.

"I know," I smiled against his shirt.

That made me feel safe to know that David cared. I heard someone clear their throat and David and I pulled apart.

"I hate to break up the love fest but our set starts in fifteen minutes," Martin informed, tossing David his guitar strap.

"I'll be there in a sec," David replied. Martin went back to wherever he came from.

"You know," David looked back to me. "You can come to me."

"Thanks," I half smiled. He patted my back and we headed to the side stage.

"Wish me luck!" Tyler grinned as the boys ran out onto the stage to begin the concert.

I decided to watch from the balcony again and this time Cameron didn't join me. I enjoyed watching the guys bounce around the stage being goofballs and having a good time. This time I focused more on Tyler than David. Tyler had this charisma about him when he was performing. There was something about him that screamed "notice me! watch me!" and I did. The smile never left his face throughout the entire set.
