Chapter 4
"Pac man? Really?"
"Don't hate on pac. You used to enjoy this game once upon a time,"
"Yeah, when I was 10."
"Come on Josh, I really want to go, I have to see it. Maybe if I do I might remember more."
"They might not even let us into the crime scene, you know what the detectives are like."
"Exactly! They want me to remember, I'm sure they'll agree with my idea."
I was done arguing with him. Since my flashback, I've had trouble piecing things together. If I can see where it happened, maybe I can join up the dots.
"Fineeee," Josh groaned, he never could say no to my puppy eyes, even when we were 10. We were in the old arcade shop, just outside town. When we were younger we would come here and spend hours trying to beat each other's scores. I always won.
Sitting in the passengers seat of Josh's car, I can't help but think about the old man who used to run the shop. I think he died, that was when we stopped going. It was abandoned after that, but the machines still work for some bizarre reason. I guess it will always be mine and Josh's haven. I wonder who owns it now.
"We're here!" The sarcastic tone in Josh's voice was unmistakable. It might be insensitive of me dragging him here, but I needed a ride home, and the moral support helped.
"Hello Allison." Fake smiles plastered the two detectives faces.
"Hi, umm...well...I was wondering. I want to remember what happened, and I thought it would be a good idea to come here to see if it helps."
I could tell they agreed with me.
"Good idea, just don't touch anything."
I began to look around, Josh tagging very close behind. It was clear that he was uncomfortable, but we were here now, I might as well have a look. Everything was normal, nothing that screamed a murder scene. That was, except for the large trail of red staining the road. Haley was on the floor, he picked her up. She tried to fight back, but there was so much blood, I tried to fight too. Another one grabbed me, but I got out. Then I started to run. I ran as fast I could.
"Al? You okay?" Josh was looking down at me as I sat on the pavement of the road, clutching his hand for dear life. That was something new.
"Yeah I'm fine. Actually, I'm really tired."
"It's the morning, how much sleep did you get?"
"Clearly not enough." I tried to get up, but ended up falling flat on the floor again. Josh rushed to my side, picking me up and helping me stand. Then his face changed completely.
"Oh my god Al, you remembered!"
"What, no... I..." I never could lie to him.
"You did!" His face was ecstatic.
"Shhhh! No one can know." I shout-whispered into his ear.
"Why no-"
"JOSH!"
"Okay! But you're telling me later." Josh was just like me, annoyingly stubborn.
It wasn't the place to argue, so I just bit my tongue, proceeding to leave the crime scene, dragging Josh behind me. Then I felt it, the rush I experienced the first time I remembered. My whole body was paralysed as my eyes darted to the tall man standing in front of me.
"Hi, I'm-" I didn't want to listen to what he had to say. I let go of Josh and stumbled backwards, finally finding my feet before backing up even more.
"Please, don't run again." How did he know that. Wait. That was him. He was the one who grabbed me. He chased me. He caught me.
"You." Was all I could say.
"You remember."
