Chapter 2

"Shhh, she's asleep." I could hear everything around me, everything being said about me. If all the tests were fine, I could leave. Waiting for the doctor felt like a lifetime. As I was beginning to lose the will to live, a tired doctor enters the room with a clip board in her hand. I instantly wake up.

"So, all good news. Your tests have come back fine and you are free to leave, but if you do remember anything please don't hesitate to call. If you want we can set you up with a therapi-"

"No thank you."

maybe I sounded too harsh, but having to talk to someone about my feelings felt like a step too far out of my comfort zone. Feeling the rush of emotion within me, I kept out of the bed Landing haphazardly into Josh's arms. I never was very good on my feet. "Woah, slow down miss eager!" Despite everything that had happened recently, Josh still tried to make me laugh. Another one of the many reasons why he is my best friend. I've started compiling a mental list.

Once we were finally out of the depressing hospital, we were off to get food. Newtown wasn't exactly a large place, the main food options were a run down taco place or the local fish and chip shop. We opted for the fish and chips, seeing as how I didn't want to be back in the hospital from food poisoning.

"So, really Allison, you can't remember a thing?" I wanted to tell him something, anything to ease the gaping hole growing inside of him. He put on a brave face, but Josh was hurting so much. No one has even given into the idea that Lucy might not be alive, and although I can't ignore the obvious, i don't want to succumb to that prospect either.

"I'm so sorry Josh, I... I really can't."

"It's okay. You've been through a lot today, eat up."

I was about to follow orders when something brushes my shoulder. A wave of electricity shoots through me as I turn around to see what provoked this feeling. A tall, lean figure has his back to me, but his jacket reads the word 'Mortem'.

It's pitch black. I can't see anything, except faintly lit figures significantly ahead of me. I try calling out to them, but my voice is barely louder than a whisper. I can't shout, I'm too afraid. There's something behind me, someone towering over me. But I can't see. I run towards the light slowly becoming bigger when I realise it's Haley Bennet. I know her name, but I don't know why. I've seen her before somewhere, maybe at a town meeting? The figure gains on me. I stumble towards Haley. She's breathing heavily too, but she's clutching her chest. Why is she so bright? Everything becomes hazy as the figure behind me comes into view. That was when the car skid to a halt right in front of us. The lights were on, so I could now see everything. Haley was bleeding. The figure was tall, their back masked by a jacket which read 'Mortem'. All I could do was watch. I was paralysed. They threw her into the car, then he turned around to face me.

"Hello? Hello, can you hear me?" I was on the floor of the fish and chip shop, sweat dripping off of me. What had just happened? Looking up, i saw a worried Josh clasping my left hand while someone else was holding my right. I've never seen this person before, or have I? He's got scruffy brown hair long enough to reach his shoulders but it's tied up in a loose bun. I can see a few freckles on his cheeks under his eyes, which are staring down at me. I can't help but notice how dark they are, for blue anyway. Not like mine, mine are a simple blue, the one you see every day when you look up at the sky. His are like navy.

"Can you hear me?" He repeats his question and I finally snap out of it. Then it hits me, I just remembered what happened to me earlier. A rush of excitement and fear rushes through me, causing me to shudder. Both boys notice this.

"What happened Al, do you feel ill again?" This time it was Josh's voice, and it was like a soothing balm.

"Hey Josh, sorry." I drowsily respond, not fully there but not completely knocked out yet.

"Don't apologise. We need to get you home." I don't have time to argue, because Josh quickly gathers my things and begins to pick me up, but clearly I'm too heavy for him to carry as well. An embarrassed Look envelopes his face as he looks to the stranger for help. He quickly gathers the situation and scoops me up with ease. Last thing I remember I was in the back of Josh's Land Rover, sprawled across both seats and a random strangers lap as I fall into a deep and long awaited sleep.
