We just wanted to leave, to get away from all of it. I wanted to get away from my past, hoping that a change of scenery would erase all the things I'd done. But it couldn't.

And dragging Allison and Josh into it was the last thing I wanted.

"Anything you say or do can and will be used against you in a court of law."

Cold handcuffs forced my arms behind my back.

"Zander, what's happening?"

Allison and Josh had confused expressions, as they were pulled away from me and each other into separate police cars.

"Al, everything's gonna be okay. Don't tell them anything!"

I was shouting over the barking of police dogs and the shouts of other officers, receiving loud messages from their radios.

The whole scene was chaotic and I felt the world start to spin. I hadn't been in a situation like this for a long time.
