Waking up, I was fully prepared to find myself once again stuck in those woods. Most of what had happened to me over the past day was an ominous blur. so, when I woke up in a warm bed, Zan and Josh looking down at me on either side, I was relieved and surprised to say the least.

"hey, sleepy head. how are you?" Josh's voice was quiet and soothing, not like the stranger who repeatedly screaming in my face.

All I did was mumble, nodding my head in response to his pretty stupid question. How could I possibly be alright? I didn't hold it against him, but Josh could be a bit silly sometimes. Especially in times like these, having friends like Josh and Zan was a great thing; much needed too.

"Have some chocolate."

Zan was holding an oversized chocolate bar in his hand, extending it towards me. I hadn't eaten in a day, so anything that was edible was good enough for me. I could feel my insides turning. hunger was eating me up inside, ironically. I almost couldn't eat it, being so hungry that you almost feel sick made eating harder than you'd think.

"umm. that's good." mumbling, I shoved three rows of the chocolate in my mouth, not bothering to savour the flavour.

"We have to go."

I nodded again and we packed up our things. I manged to multitask; eating and packing. that was also harder than you'd think.

By noon, we were on the road again. I don't think any of us knew where we were going, but we knew we had to get away from this crazy town. the border out of the state was drawing closer, but as the van drew to a halt on the freeway, I noticed flashing red and blue lights in the distance.

I couldn't say for sure, at that point, that those flashes of complimentary colours were waiting for us. we were just three teenagers who were in way over their heads.

Way, way over our heads.
