SOS
The following morning, as the sun rays pierced through Jenny's eyelids, Celia opened the drapes.
"Up! Lazybones, you're going to be late for school,"
Jenny buried her face in the pillow, murmuring nothings of discomfort. She reached for another pillow and covered her head with it.
"Get up now!"
Out of reluctance, Jenny got up and showered; for the first time, Jenny wore make-up, strawberry lip-gloss and, eyeliner.
Strutted down the stairs, her aunt saw the change in her looks.
"Never realized you wear make-up or even own any kind," Celia said.
Jenny sat and served herself a short stack of pancakes and scrambled eggs; "Haha very funny aunt" she feigned a laugh.
"It's a boy, isn't it?"
Jenny groaned, "aunt, stop... It's just lip-gloss,"
She finished her breakfast and left for school. On her way to school; on the school bus, Jenny had her headphone. Glancing through the window, something caught Jenny's eye.
A black cat. Jenny didn't fully grasp why she felt it was a message or a warning; the aura just changed.
The black cat was staring directly at her. In a blink of an eye, the cat vanished.
Jenny became uneasy. She googled what a black cat symbolized. She read in an article that it meant bad luck, a jinx.
After several minutes of obsessing over it; Jenny had to wave the thought from her mind.
Slade sat two seats away from her now. They exchanged smiles and pleasant gestures. It was math class. One of Jenny's favorite.
During the class, Jenny got tucked away again; she saw herself in a hospital, Ginger on a gurney surged into an operating room. Her mother crying.
She saw doctors operating on her, a surgeon said, "We lost her..."
Jenny took in a sharp breath; sweating, it was as if she saw a ghost, "Are you ok Jenny?" the teacher asked.
Everyone in the classroom started laughing; "Weirdo..." someone in the classroom murmured.
Slade tapped Jenny on her shoulder, "Babe, are you okay?"
Jenny nodded nervously; she had another vision, Ginger was in grave danger.
After class, Jenny ditched school, she knew they could suspend her for doing that or worse, expelled but she didn't care. Jenny feared for Ginger's life.
The only person who can help her was her aunt. Jenny barged in, Celia wasn't expecting to see her.
"What are you doing here; Jen?"
Jenny threw herself on the couch, staring blankly; "Aunt..."
Celia got disturbed, "What is it? What happened?"
Jenny couldn't bring her words together. Her eyes welled up with tears.
"Aunt... Ginger is going to die, and it's because of me,"
Jenny narrated her vision to Celia. "What makes you assume you did that to her?" Celia asked.
"Aunt... It was me, I was so angry and at that moment, something happened to her, I'm sure it was my doing..."
Celia paused for a moment, sat on the couch; moments after, she stood up and paced around the living room.
"Aunt, what is it?! What can we do to save her? I know she's mean and I kind of hate her but I don't want her to die," Jenny said crying.
"Relax Jen, you placed her under a curse, in your moment of anger, you inflicted a sickness curse on her, she will not get better until you break it with a reverse spell,"
"we're going to need some healing herbs and crystals, make it into a poultice, and place it above her head while chanting the reverse spell... if you don't do that; she'll get more sick until she dies".
Time was not on their side, Celia hurried to a room in a corner and came out with a little mortar and pestle, a bag filled with crystals, and a black seedy thing. She started beating them in the mortar; whispering some things went back inside the room and came out with a black candle.
Squatted on the floor and asked Jen to shut the windows and doors, Jenny obeyed without hesitation.
The black candle suddenly lit by itself after Celia whispered some words that Jenny didn't understand. It didn't sound like English; it was an unfamiliar language?
"Jenny come!" Celia said.
Jenny came closer and sat beside her.
"Pull a hair from your head," Celia said.
Jenny pulled out a hair and gave it to Celia; Celia took the hair strand, placed it under the fire from the black candle, and Jenny felt a sharp pain in her head immediately.
"Ouch!" Jenny exclaimed
"What was that?" Jenny asked.
Celia smirked, staring at the fire.
"It's going to work..."
"What?" Jenny seemed confused.
"The healing and reverse spell will not work over the air, someone has to perform it physically, but I can't risk you going to the hospital performing the ritual; you could get caught," Celia said.
Jenny gasped with her eyebrows raised.
"So how are we going to do it, aunt, I don't want her to die, I don't care about getting caught... I'll be careful!"
Celia stood up and grabbed a napkin in the kitchen, Jenny followed her.
"Patience Jen, you won't have to perform the ritual there, all you need is a strand of her hair and we can do the ritual here"
"Oh... Wow, really? That's brilliant aunt! But how?"
Celia poured the substance she beat in the mortar into the napkin and laid it on the table.
"The black candle represents image Jen, it's what witches use in performing a killing ritual or a bonding ritual, it represents one's presence; using a strand of her hair will transfer the effects of this poultice and your reverse spell to her wherever she is..." Celia said.
"Wow, that's so cool!!!" Jenny replied.
They sat down and strategized how to get Ginger's hair.
Jenny's aunt suggested Jenny goes to the hospital to visit Ginger, make her way into her ward and pull a hair out after inducing a magical sleep on her, that's if she's not asleep already.
The magical slumber will erase her memory of even seeing Jenny.
Ginger was going to wake up whole again.
"Huh? Aunt, how am I going to do that? I can barely remember the last spell I chanted and I fear what my powers can do, you know I can't control them yet"
"I know Jen, you won't have to cast a spell, you'll use a magical powder, it's called the devil's breath, induces a death-like sleep, you'll need just a pinch, too much of it can make her sleep for months or even years depending on the amount you use"
"Oh my God... that's scary!"
"Not really... it's not fatal, it wears off eventually, it's made with sandalwood, mugwort, and cinnamon, grind to a powder and perform the moon spirit ritual after... easy peasy"
"Yeah right... easy for you" Jenny rolled her eyes.
The plan was in motion, Celia drove Jenny to the hospital.
"Remember what I told you... just a pinch! Pull the hair and come right back here!" Celia instructed strictly.
"Yes, aunt!"
Immediately, Jenny got out of the car, Celia parked and waited in the car.
The nurse at the reception gave Jenny a visitor's tag and directed her to Ginger's Ward, Jenny introduced herself as a friend and schoolmate to Ginger but checked in under another name — Allison; Ginger's bestie in school, but she knew Allison was still in school, so there was no fear of clashing with her.
Jenny made her way to Ginger's Ward, but she wasn't alone, her mother was there with her.
"Damn it!!" Jenny said to herself.
Jenny peeked through the glass in the door; she didn't know what to do. She saw a doctor approaching her direction; Jenny swerved and pulled up her hoodie to hide her face.
Luckily for her, the doctor went into the ward and asked to talk to Ginger's mom outside.
That was an opening for Jenny. Immediately the doctor and Ginger's mom stepped out; she snuck in.
Ginger was awake; "Who are you?" Ginger asked.
Jenny's face hidden beneath her hoodie, moved closer. Before Ginger could raise the alarm, Jenny sprinkled the Devil's breath on her face. Ginger fell asleep immediately, without hesitation; Jenny pulled a strand of hair from Ginger's head.
Immediately she did that, Ginger's mom came in wiping her face. "What are you doing here?" Ginger's mom asked.
Jenny knew if she didn't think of something fast, Ginger's mom could call for security and things will get messy.
"I'm a friend to Ginger, I go to Hilton high too, I came to pay her a visit," Jenny said and let down her hoodie.
Ginger's mom came closer and saw her daughter in a sound sleep. "She fell asleep already? She just woke up not long before"
"Yes, I met her fast asleep... I'll be on my way now"
"Okay, dear... Thanks for coming"
Jenny exhaled as she stepped out of the hospital; mission accomplished, they drove back home.
In a few hours, it'll be midnight — the witching hour!
Celia got everything ready; the poultice, the black candle, Ginger's hair, and the lotus symbol drawn on the floor. Everything was in place.
Jenny held the poultice and the black candle wrapped with Ginger's hair strand after Celia chanted something to it.
Celia instructed Jenny to stand in the middle of the symbol and chant this spell, thinking about Ginger, sending positive thoughts to her.
"Jen, stand in the middle with the poultice in your right hand and the candle in your left, I want you to think about Ginger, send positive energy to her—and say this with your eyes closed"
"As above
So below...
Fill the night with love
The morning sun will take away her pain
May she wake up whole again"
Jenny did as Celia instructed, and immediately a strong wind blew the fire on the candle off.
Celia exhaled and switched on the bulbs.
"It's over Jen, Ginger is fine now," Celia said, Jenny jumped for joy.
"What do we do with the poultice now?"
Jenny looked at her hands and the poultice vanished; it was just a napkin and the candle in her hand.
"Oh my God, where did it go?"
"It has gone to do its work... well-done Jen, you're a fast learner"
Celia wiped the floor and tidied the living room.
Jenny slept peacefully that night, knowing Ginger was going to be fine.
The following morning in the hospital; Ginger was to go for a surgery that the doctors predicted had a 30 percent success rate.
Ginger woke up seeing her mom laying her head on the hospital bed. She tapped her mom on the shoulder.
"Mom... wake up,"
Ginger's mum woke up.
"Darling you're awake..."
"Mom, I feel different... I don't feel sick, the pain in my throat... it's gone! I'm hungry"
The doctor came in to check on Ginger and get her prepared for her surgery but noticed a big change; the machine showed her vitals were stable.
"Your vitals are looking good this morning, Miss. Stein, that's one hell of a nap you took! How do you feel?"
Ginger got up from her hospital bed. She could walk perfectly fine.
"Doctor, I feel great! I'm so hungry!"
Mrs. Stein was surprised and happy. The doctor instructed a nurse to get food for Ginger.
"Mrs. Stein... we'll run some tests on your daughter, hopefully, the surgery won't be necessary anymore"
"Oh, doctor, please do so..."
The nurse came in with food and Ginger devoured it in minutes.
The test results came in and Ginger was in perfect health. The doctor had to call it a miracle.
After a day of bed rest and pampering, Ginger got discharged from the hospital.
