"I solemnly swear"
A/N:
Lil Warning: Drug usage presents itself in this chapter!
I've inserted a few collages of what I envisioned everyone wearing. I decided not to take the time to describe it during the chapter so that if you don't like what I have picked out then you can picture something else.
I ultimately could not find a picture of a veil that would look good with the dress I chose, so when I mention a veil later on, you will just have to roll with it.
Their bouquets look exactly like Lily's except they are smaller!
Okay so, James's suit is the one with the grey tie. I was trying to find a grey suit with a black tie, but oddly enough I could only find grey suits with black bow ties... That means the rest of the Marauders have emerald green ties!
Have fun reading!😉
P.S. I laughed so hard while writing this, so make sure you're somewhere you can laugh while reading!
...
Sunsets drew not only the eye in, but the mind too. They had a way of cancelling out every other thought to focus the brain only on the deep hues of color strewn across the sky. The reds; the blues; the yellows; they all made an appearance in the celestial show.
That night it appeared that the sky had a mind of its own. Blinking would cause you to miss what seemed like a lifetime of beauty.
Lily's eyes always seemed to stray to the sky these days. It silenced her hardened thoughts. The summer dog days had set in, which meant she had endured far more than enough time with her family and she could only think about her next year at Hogwarts.
Her fifth-year would be starting in exactly one month. This year was a particularly big one, full of exams and difficult classes. She hoped to become a prefect, despite Marlene's protests on the matter.
"What're you thinkin' about?" Her dad sat down at the kitchen table across from her.
Harry Evans had been a thoughtful man since the day he was born. It was one of his more endearing qualities that had seemed to shine through everything he did. Lily admired him greatly for this, as her own thoughtfulness was dull compared to her strong impulses.
"The future," she replied quickly.
"What an interesting concept," he paused for a moment, drawing her eyes away from the sky. "Dwelling on it too much doesn't do the mind any good, although us humans can't help but wonder what it's going to be like."
His sentences reminded her of a mix of McGonagall's lectures and Dumbledore's speeches. It was like he was warning her not to think about the future, but at the same time was encouraging her to be curious. An odd combination that made sense all the same.
"I just like to wonder what my life will be like in a few years. I'll be graduating from Hogwarts, which means I will have to get a job somewhere and-"
"Do you think you'll get married, Lily-flower?" Harry cut her off.
Lily had thought about meeting the right man for her a few dozen times at least, but her ambitions were stronger than her need for marriage right now. Besides, the only guys in her life were Severus—who would only ever be a friend—and the Marauders. The day she even spoke to the Marauders, minus Remus, in a kind manner was the day she went batshit crazy.
"I think eventually I will. It's not something that needs to happen though," Lily explained, her eyes darting back to the window.
The sky was now dark, the sun completely set by now. Stars lit up the area sparsely as the neighbourhood light poles were producing light of their own.
"You'll find him, maybe you already have..."
Her mind left the fond memory and entered consciousness. Lily stretched, punching the wall behind her in the process. She stifled a groan of pain, not wanting to wake Marlene who was still snoring away.
March 20 had finally arrived, bringing exciting jitters to everyone involved in the wedding. It certainly was a big day for mostly just Lily and James, but Sirius and Marlene also claimed it was big for them too.
They were the Best Man and Maid of Honour respectively—a dangerous choice—which meant they were in charge of a lot of responsibilities. Of course, they had the rest of the bridal party to help them, but Lily and James chose them to do their jobs for a reason.
Her clock read 04:00 a.m. She needed to be out of the flat and at the church at around noon in order to get there on time. It looked like she had some time to kill.
Carefully stepping around the room, she traipsed out the door and into the kitchenette. Tea had popped into her head as the thing that could calm down both her jitters and rapid paced mind.
It seems that she wasn't the only one in the flat whose mind had awoken them. In the living area, she found Annie and Julia laughing quietly about something outside of the fort they had set up earlier.
The two had left Hogwarts for the wedding with permission from Dumbledore—which had been granted only a week ago. (It almost wasn't as the amount of detentions that they had been getting recently from pranks pulled on other students was sky high.)
"What're you two girls doing up?" Lily surprised them with her quiet presence.
"Nothing!" They spoke in unison.
"Well, that wasn't the slightest bit suspicious at all... Do you want some tea?" Lily offered knowing full well they weren't spilling any secrets.
"Sure, Lils," Annie answered quickly as they followed her into the kitchen.
They sat in content silence around the kitchen island while waiting for the tea water to boil. As the sound of bubbles inside the kettle got louder, Annie's need to confess everything increased steadily, creating a war inside her mind.
Lily's persona was one of unmatched quality; it shined as bright as the sun and went as deep as the ocean. One look was enough to make you cling to her for dear life and run away in the other direction simultaneously. She tempted you to spill all of your darkest secrets with a single mannerism. She was irreplaceable, which is why everyone loved her more than their most treasured memories.
The kettle squealed, signaling the water's bursting point and Annie's ridiculous need to explode into conversation.
"You would be a good detective," Annie spoke louder than needed at four in the morning.
Lily chuckled in response softly as Julia took the liberty of shushing her friend. Annie rolled her eyes playfully in only a way that a Potter could manage.
"Why's that?" Lily asked after pouring milk and sugar in the tea.
"Your presence is enough alone to make us want to tell you about what's been going on at Hogwarts," Julia explained as it seemed words were failing Annie at the moment.
"Well, what has been going on at Hogwarts?" Lily followed up with while sliding two mugs of tea to them.
"Jules and I have been in an ongoing prank war for the past two months with Graham and Hunter," Annie's finally spewed out.
"That would explain the number of detentions you guys have been getting. So, the alleged students you've been pranking are just getting caught in the crossfire?" Lily put it together.
"Yeah, quite a few people have been unfortunate in that respect," Julia trailed off.
"As long as you don't hurt anybody," Lily said with a light tone.
"Is that what you used to tell the boys?" Annie asked curiously.
"Most of the time, yes, but sometimes—when they went too far—I said a few choice words," Lily smiled, reminiscing her Hogwarts past.
"What were those choice words?"
"And that will be saved for another time," Lily said and the two girls giggled.
By the time they were finished swapping stories in the kitchen, the clock struck six. Lily went to take a shower to rid herself of any filth she could have collected overnight. She liked to think of it as a fresh start. Mary, Marlene, and Alice woke up from their deep sleep and started to get ready for the day as well.
It was time to get hitched.
...
He was getting married.
He was actually getting married.
James Potter had fancied Lily Evans since almost the very beginning of their Hogwarts career. At first, he had been able to convince himself he was just infatuated with her, but as more years rolled by, he realized it was much more than that.
Throughout all the thrown insults and hexes, James would've been stupid to believe he and Lily would actually go anywhere. Sure, he fantasized about it happening a fair few amount of times, but those were called fantasies for a reason.
Yet, something changed after fifth-year. The year of final straws. Snape and Lily's friendship had finally ended. The Marauders were closer than ever after The Prank, which had them in shambles for months. Then, James had to mature for Sirius as his best friend got disowned over the summer and needed a shoulder to lean on.
Sixth-year started with a bang when Lily and James agreed to get along, merging their two groups in the process. Their bond became unbreakable in the matter of mere weeks, which was extremely impressive due to their rocky past.
James managed to simply ignore his crush for Lily while hers developed for him.
Of course, it took another summer for them to finally call each other boyfriend and girlfriend, but in James's eyes it was better late than never.
The rest of seventh-year seemed to be more of a test than others with an explosive ending. Lily's mum died right in front of her eyes and then Lily was locked away from everyone at the Order Safe House. Not exactly a fun way to end your last year at Hogwarts.
Still, they beat the odds and were now on their way to saying their vows.
Sirius appeared to be more jittery than usual. Every time you tried to speak with him he would get this manic look on his face and say "James is getting married" multiple times over. They just chalked it up to excitement.
"Sirius, where are those brownies I made for Lily and James?" Peter asked while frantically running around the kitchenette.
"Gone," he answered with a far off look in his eye.
At the current moment, Remus and James were in the latter's bedroom trying to collect all their suits for the wedding. Sirius was sprawled out on the ground of the living area.
"What do you mean gone?" Peter stopped running around abruptly to look at Sirius.
"Ate," Sirius spoke while pointing to himself.
"You ate them? You ate the brownies?" Pete ran over to Sirius to examine him closer.
Sure enough, Sirius's eyes were bloodshot and his heart rate was going at a rapid pace. Two signs of one specific thing.
"Oh Merlin," Peter groaned as Remus and James entered the room.
"What's wrong, Wormy?" James asked with a wide grin etched onto his features.
"Sirius is stoned," Peter said with a look of pure terror.
...
The girls made it to the beautiful church that Lily and James had chosen for a few major reasons.
First, it was the same church that Euphemia and Fleamont had gotten married in. They were a clear picture of what true love was and Lily and James wanted to pay a tribute to their love while they were still around.
Second, booking the church was cheap. Now, the Potters were rich rich, but Lily felt bad about always spending their money. So, whenever she could spare their money she made sure that she chose the cheapest option.
Third, even though neither of them were particularly religious, Lily and James both felt that the church was the best place to get married. They couldn't exactly explain it, but the church felt the most wedding-y to them.
Lily had successfully gotten her hair and makeup out of the way, which meant the only thing she needed to do was slip into her dress.
This was easy enough.
Marlene left the room with Mary and Alice, leaving Lily to her own devices. Retrieving Lily's dress from where Marlene had put it wasn't a difficult task, if only she remembered where she put the dress in the first place.
"Guys... I can't remember where I put the dress," Marlene said panicking.
"How the fuck do you lose a dress?" Mary asked this close to loosing it.
"I didn't lose it, I misplaced it! There is a clear difference!" Marlene corrected her.
"Nobody cares if there's a difference! Whether you lost it or misplaced it, you don't have the dress either way!" Alice spoke sternly.
"Well, what do we do?" Marlene asked sheepishly.
"We find the damn dress!" Mary spoke like it was obvious.
"Where did you last have it?" Alice said trying to clear her thoughts.
"If I knew where I last had it, then I would have the dress, Alice!" Marlene spoke through gritted teeth.
Suddenly, the doors behind them opened and Lily stepped out in her wedding dress with the back still unzipped. Well, it seemed that Lily found the dress herself.
"I guess we already had put it in the closet! Can you zip me up?" Lily said oblivious to the incredulous looks on their faces.
Marlene took the liberty of zipping the dress up while sharing a look of relief with Alice and Mary. It truly could've been a disaster if she actually lost Lily's wedding dress.
"Alright! There's ten minutes before the ceremony starts, so now we wait!"
...
James tried his best to stifle a laugh as he dragged Sirius through a side door to stand at the altar. If they made it through the ceremony without Sirius collapsing on the ground, then it would be a miracle.
The brownies that Peter had made were supposed to be a funny wedding gift for Lily and James. He had put pot in the brownies and without knowing those very fine details, Sirius ate the entire pan without a second thought.
"Why is that person naked?" Sirius whispered in James's ear.
The mural Sirius was staring at did have a few people who appeared to be naked or were hardly dressed. The stoned mind probably wouldn't be able to comprehend that the mural depicted people from thousands of years ago.
"Because they want to be," James responded, still trying not to laugh.
The music picked up and Annie and Julia walked down the aisle throwing flower petals flamboyantly. It took zero effort to convince the duo to be the flower girls as they were the ones to suggest it in the first place.
When they got to the end of the aisle, before sitting down next to Julia, Annie pointed to Sirius behind James. In confusion, James turned around only to see Sirius sitting on the floor taking his shoes off.
"Mate! What are you doing?" James whisper-shouted.
"Getting naked," Sirius said like it was obvious.
"You can't be naked!"
"Well, why not? Those people are!" Sirius nearly shouted back.
The pianist gave James and Sirius a dirty look as the song changed. James looked up to see Remus and Mary walking down the aisle together with huge grins on their faces.
"Those people aren't real! Now, stand up!" James yanked Sirius off the floor so that he was now standing behind James.
Sirius still didn't have his shoes on, but that was something to worry about later. Remus and Mary arrived at the end of the aisle and took their places.
"Prongs?" Remus asked with a tone light humor.
"Yes?"
"You do know that Sirius doesn't have any shoes on, right?" Remus confirmed.
"Yep."
The ceremony continued with Alice and Peter walking down the aisle. With each note from the piano, the time where Lily would walk down that same aisle got closer.
"Lily wants to walk down the aisle with Sirius!" Peter squeaked as he reached the other three Marauders.
"Does she know he's high as a kite?" James asked as Marlene started to walk down the aisle.
Marlene was the last person to walk down the aisle before Lily. That meant there was little time to make a plan to avoid Sirius walking Lily down the aisle.
"Nope, but she's about to find out," Remus spoke as he dragged Sirius out the side door.
Remus walked as fast as you could with someone who was stumbling over their feet like their shoe laces were tied together.
"What's wrong with him?" Lily asked Remus as they approached her.
"He's stoned, completely on accident by the way, so this has nothing to do with any of us," Remus clarified as Sirius sat on the floor.
"Is he okay? Can he walk straight?" Lily fired the two questions back to back.
"He's... in his own world that's for sure," Remus responded.
They looked down to see Sirius playing with the bottom of Lily's dress. He twisted the fabric around his finger and then promptly burst out laughing.
"Sirius? Sirius? I need you to listen to me for a moment," Lily snapped her fingers in his face to grab his attention.
He gazed up at her in awe almost. She assumed him gaining eye contact was as much as a confirmation that he could understand her as she was going to get.
"Alright, we need to walk out there," she pointed to the two closed doors in front of her. "I need you to focus for a moment, alright?"
"Yes ma'am!" He said before shooting up to his feet.
Lily then noticed that he was not wearing any shoes. This revealed his mismatched socks—one foot with a black background and neon red cherries and the other with a royal blue background and pink polka dots. She laughed slightly at the pure chaos that had ensued already and prepared herself for what was to come.
Nothing could prepare her for what was going to happen in mere hours, it seemed that the pot was extra strong.
Sirius saluted Lily a little too enthusiastically and poked her eye right before they had to walk down the aisle together.
"Merlin help us," Lily muttered as she blinked her eyes rapidly.
"Good luck," Remus said before rushing back to his place at the altar.
The tune the piano was playing changed yet again, this signaled Lily and Sirius's turn down the aisle.
Deep breath in...
Deep breath out...
They hooked arms and opened the church doors to reveal multiple rows of pews filled with people. After seeing Lily and Sirius, everyone stood up from their seats and turned to watch them walk.
"Why's everyone staring at us?" Sirius whispered to Lily, causing her to giggle.
She chose not to respond, hoping to draw less attention to the fact that the Best Man wasn't wearing any shoes.
Lily looked at James, who also looked like he was trying not to laugh, and time seemed to stop.
Walking down the aisle with one of her best friends to all of her best friends, was a feeling like no other.
It was the rush of adrenaline going down that first roller coaster hill.
It was listening to a song for the first time.
It was finding old polaroids of you and your friends.
It was dancing ridiculously with your favorite people.
It was ranting about a topic you were especially passionate about.
It was everything.
Sirius tripped over air when they reached the end of the aisle and stumbled into Remus. He caught him as gracefully as possible, but this still made everyone in the pews laugh lightheartedly.
Lily didn't even check if Remus had managed to catch Sirius for she couldn't take her eyes off of James. He wore that famous crooked grin and his hair was as messy as always and his eyes looked like pools of honey. He was perfect, and he was hers.
"There are many, many, people in the world and most of them are not here at this wedding. How lucky does this make you?" The officiant started.
Remus and Sirius had combined their efforts in writing the officiant's script to make it simple and funny. They wanted it to represent Lily and James in the best way possible.
"Out of everyone on the planet Lily and James have asked you to join them as they enter into the amazing institution of marriage. So, the least you can do is pay attention, okay?"
This line caused a ripple of chuckles to travel throughout the pews. Sirius laughed hysterically as if he hadn't been one of the people to write it.
"Finding the one out of all the people in the entire world should be impossible! But James and Lily found each other! What are the chances? I don't know—I'm not great at math—but it seems pretty unlikely."
Lily and James looked at each other and silently thanked their past selves for getting them there.
"Yet, here they are, in front of their family and friends making the impossible seem not only possible, but inevitable."
Euphemia and Fleamont occupied the front pew, looking prouder than ever. Mia winked at Lily after she caught her scanning the pews.
She could see people from every part of her life. Her cousins sat near the back with an empty spot where Petunia should've been. Not dwelling on the fact that her older sister didn't show up, she found Regulus and Craig sitting in the crowd next to some of the people from the Gryffindor quidditch team. Minnie had even made an effort to show up.
"Was it destiny? Happenstance? Total dumb luck? Who cares? The important is it's happening! Lily and and James are getting married. Today! Right now! No, really. Right now!"
The officiant's theatrical performance had grabbed everyone's attention extremely quickly. Even Sirius, who was staring at him with glazed over eyes, was paying attention to the dialogue.
"Do you James Fleamont Potter, take Lily Erica Evans to be the one? The one you not only give love, respect, and compassion to, but also allow yourself to receive the same from?"
"I solemnly swear," James said immediately.
Lily laughed at the inside joke, but lightly slapped him on the arm.
"And do you, Lily Erica Evans, take James Fleamont Potter to be the one? The one you not only give love, respect, and compassion to, but allow yourself to receive the same from?"
Lily sighed before responding.
"I solemnly swear," Lily responded.
James laughed at the fact that Lily actually participated in his antics, which reminded him how much they truly had came from the place they were just a few years ago. He couldn't be more grateful.
"May I please have the two rings?" The officiant asked Sirius.
Sirius, who seemed just a hint more coherent now, reached into his pocket and held the wedding bands over his head. The officiant was lucky enough to be taller Sirius, so he grabbed them with much more ease than Lily would've had.
"This is a ring, and this is a ring," he held them up to show the crowd members. "1 + 1 = 2, right? But these two individual rings are a grand symbol of the final numbers we're considering on this very special day. 2 separate rings create the very special bond of husband and wife, a married couple. So, in this case 1 + 1 = an even greater 1... Like I said, I'm not that great at math."
He paused for the crowd's laugh.
"Looking at the two of you, I can see it clearly; my impossible math works! 1 + 1 truly does equal an even greater one; that of an officially married couple. And so, I am extremely honoured to officially pronounce James and Lily legally wed! You may kiss the bride!"
And kiss they did.
"James and Lily Potter, everyone!"
...
In order to make the reception as fun as possible, Lily decided not to invite any muggles because she did not want the Ministry to get involved when some drunk wizard accidentally used magic in front of a muggle. She was a bit sad that that had meant none of her biological family could attend, but while Lily was in the moment, she completely forgot about her previous sadness.
One look, dark room
Meant just for you
Lily and James danced around the room with all of their dearest mates cheering them on. No one would have it any other way.
Time moved too fast
You play it back
Time did move too fast for comfort. It seemed like just yesterday James had proposed to Lily and now they were married.
Buttons on a coat
Light-hearted joke
No proof, not much
But you saw enough
James spun Lily as the record scratched abruptly. They both whirled around to see Sirius pointing his wand to his throat after replacing the record with a new one. It looked like Sirius had enough of that.
"Alright! It's time to par-tay!" Sirius shouted with an amplified voice.
Oh, girl, I've known you very well
I've seen you growing everyday
The Bee Gees suddenly filled the air with their sweet sounding voices, accompanied by Sirius's trying to hit the correct notes. Marlene laughed as he stood on a table dancing.
I never really looked before
But now you take my breath away
Sirius's dance moves got extremely theatrical as the song moved along. Everyone cheered him on—especially Lily and James who were enjoying the show a little too much—which only fueled his confidence.
Suddenly you're in my life
Part of everything I do
You got me working day and night
Just tryin' to keep a hold on you
Sirius pulled Marlene onto the table with him, so now they were singing a karaoke duet. Although only one of them lucid at the current moment, both of them recited the lyrics perfectly.
Here in your arms I found your paradise
My only chance for happiness
They all watched with baited breath as if Marlene and Sirius were suddenly going to dance right off the table. Lily held a little hope that Marlene would land gracefully, but Sirius isn't normally too graceful when he's sober, so imagine him high...
And if I lose you now, I think I would die
Oh, say you'll always be my baby, we can make it shine
We can take forever, just a minute at a time
That is what James and Lily planned on doing, just taking forever a minute at a time because Lily was more than a woman to James.
More than a woman
More than a woman to me
...
Most of the party guests had left as they quickly grew tired as the night grew old and morning drew near. Sirius was still high as a kite though and Lily had a sneaking suspicion that he had given some brownies leftovers to Marlene.
"Whatcha doin' love?" Lily popped up by James's shoulder, who was laughing with Remus about something.
"We're watching Sirius try and fail to dip a strawberry in the chocolate fountain," he replied.
Their grins hadn't left their faces all night. Some would say they had entered their honeymoon phase, but Remus predicted that this would last for much longer than that. Perhaps, it wasn't a phase at all.
As for a honey moon, Lily and James decided against having one of those. They thought it was much too dangerous to travel during times of war and didn't want to risk missing anything for the Order.
"This is going to go awful," Lily said, downing the rest of whatever drink Mary had poured for her.
"Yeah, but I think it's better just to let him be-"
Crash!
Sirius had tripped into the chocolate fountain somehow—Merlin only knows—and managed to flip the entire table on its side. He was left with a bare strawberry and stupid grin on his face.
"I was not expecting that to happen..."

Well, I hope that reached your expectations!
The next two chapters feature more Annie and Julia, so I hope that's alright! Personally, they're two of my favorite characters and I enjoy writing them immensely.
This is probably the last chapter I will write while having just two days in person school, as I am going four days in person starting next Monday! (March 22) I ask that you all are extra patient with me while I try to balance it all!
I hope you all have a great day/night wherever you are in the world! Please stay safe!
Lmao anyways thanks for reading
