1; He once was blind, but now he sees... sort of

Nobody knows where Tango came from, what he is, or really anything about him at all other than he's just a blue guy that acted goofy like the rest of the Hermits. Maybe that's the reason they kept him around, because he acted like they did. Or maybe they just wanted to study him and figure out what exactly he was.

And that was something he couldn't answer if he wanted to.

There was one thing in particular that stuck out about Tango, though; the fact that he was blind. His bright blue eyes had no irises or pupils to see out of, so all he could really do was detect where light was. He could see a few colours if they were bright enough and close enough to his face, but those were few and far between. He had a way of getting around it, though. His senses of hearing and smelling were impeccable compared to other Hermits' senses. Even Ren was impressed by how well Tango could hear and smell, and Ren had been convinced nobody was better at it than he, himself, was. If Tango was honest, he really didn't need to see at all. But that didn't mean he didn't want to.

Zedaph wanted Tango to experience more than just light and dark and three colours. He wanted Tango to experience the entire world. He deserved it.

Zed tried everything he could think of, exhausting himself in the process.

"Don't you think you're going a little too far?" Impulse asked worriedly as Zedaph carefully mixed together two brightly coloured chemicals. "I mean, he's said that he doesn't need to see and he's fine without-"

"He does need to see," Zedaph interrupted, turned away from Impulse. He paused his work and set down his equipment to sigh and remove his safety goggles. "He told me wants to see us, Impulse." He finally turned around to face the other man, tears in his eyes. "He said exactly this:

"I want to see the people I love."

Impulse's eyes widened and tears sprung to his eyes quicker than he could blink them away. "He really said that?"

Zedaph nodded. "He loves us," he said softly. "He wants to see what we look like. He deserves to see more than just light and darkness. He's cried about wanting to see like everybody else does, he deserves something."

Later that day, Zedaph spoke to Xisuma about creating some sort of device like glasses that could allow Tango to at least see colours.

"That would take a lot of work, Zed," Xisuma warned him, "and a lot of patience."

Zedaph nodded. "I know," he said. "I've already asked Doc and Mumbo to help out since they're good with mechanics. I just... He really wants to see like the rest of us, and he feels out of place because he's different. If we can help him see, maybe he'll feel like he fits in."

Xisuma nodded. "You have my permission," he said. "If you ever need my help, don't hesitate to ask. Tango is a fellow Hermit and he deserves the care he wants and needs."

"Thank you so much."

As Zedaph was leaving to go home, he got a message from Impulse saying Tango wanted his hair brushed. Zed laughed and typed back, Can't you do it yourself?

He likes it better when you do it, Impulse replied.

Smiling, Zedaph caved. He loved doing it anyway. I'm on my way.

Tango let out a purr as Zedaph ran the hairbrush through his hair, drawing a giggle from Zed. Zedaph loved when Tango purred. It was a very loud, low, happy sound that was just the purest, gentlest thing. It was different than any other purr he'd ever heard, but it was absolutely adorable and he loved it.

"I talked to Xisuma today," Zedaph started, noticing Tango's pointed ear perk up at the sound of his voice. "We're going to make you a special pair of glasses so you can see."

Tango's tail flicked at that. "Really?" he asked curiously. He was definitely excited.

Zedaph nodded. "Mhm. Doc and Mumbo are going to help me make them," he said. "You might not be able to see like the rest of us, but it'll be better than what you can see now. I'm hoping, at least."

"I'd be happy with anything," Tango said honestly, his tail swishing gently over the edge of the bed. "I want to see what you and Impulse look like so bad."

"I know," Zedaph whispered, gathering Tango's hair in his hands. "I know."

"We could add a small camera to it," Zedaph suggested, "and make it electronic so he can adjust the image quality and saturation of what he's looking at." He'd gathered with Doc, Mumbo, and Xisuma to discuss how they were going to create the glasses Tango needed to see.

"Can glasses really help someone who's legally blind?" Mumbo asked, his eyebrows raising when Doc nodded. "Oh wow."

Doc nodded again. "Making them completely electronic is a good idea," he said, "but they might be janky and impractical for every day use."

"Then the circuits have to be small and lightweight," Xisuma said. "Which... will likely be more difficult to work with, but you're pretty precise, Doc, aren't you?"

Doc hummed. "I suppose," he said. "I-"

"Wait, wait," Mumbo interrupted. "Can I just... make a suggestion?"

Xisuma quirked a brow at him as if saying, "Go ahead."

Mumbo took a short breath. "Why can't Grian use his Watcher powers to-"

"No," Xisuma snapped, the room going quiet.

Mumbo froze for a second then sighed. "Look, he could fix Tango's eyes and let him see," he said, nervously watching as Xisuma's eyes became angrier by the second. "We can take precautions, too, so things don't get out of hand-"

"Mumbo, I said no," Xisuma said softly, but sternly. "Grian's powers are way too dangerous and he's way too easily corrupt by them. You remember what happened last time he got out of hand, don't you? He nearly destroyed Boatem."

Mumbo shivered at the memory. "Yes, but like I said, we can take precautions! We can restrain him, and in case he starts to get out of control, then we can sedate him or something," he suggested. "But his powers can give Tango perfect vision."

Xisuma sighed. "Grian is unstable," he said. "And between you and me, I'm at my wits end with his shenanigans. The moment he uses his Watcher powers is the moment he's banned from Hermitcraft. Believe me, I'll know when he does."

Eyes widening, Mumbo took a shaky breath. "Right..."

"Shall we get back to work?"

The four of them worked diligently for hours on end to build the glasses, scraping ideas and retrying things with other ideas and coming up with completely different designs, to finally - finally - finish with a working pair of electronic glasses.

Zedaph was quick to fetch Tango, perhaps a little too excited about sharing the device with him. He couldn't help it; it was too important to Tango for Zed not to be excited.

"Will they really help me see?" Tango asked, turning the pair of glasses over in his hands to get a sense of what they might look like. "How do they work?"

Zedaph smiled even brighter once Tango asked that - he loved when Tango asked him to explain his gadgets - and he couldn't contain his excitement as his ears flapped up and down. "They have a small, little camera in them that captures the images of what your seeing, then projects that image into the lenses which have a special light in them that should illuminate the image enough that you can at least see colours." He took a deep breath after speaking so much. "I don't know how well they'll work, and we can make new versions of it if we need to, but..." He sighed happily. "I have my fingers crossed."

Tango smiled. "Can I try them?"

"Yes, of course!" Zedaph helped guide Tango's hands to put the glasses on his face, Tango whimpering as he squinted at the brightness. They work, Zedaph thought, his first thought. They work enough for him to see light.

Tango blinked a lot before finally being able to open his eyes, and suddenly he was whipping his head around as his lips curled into a smile. "Woah."

Zedaph had to hold his own hands to contain his excitement at seeing Tango's reaction. "What do you see?"

"It's... it's like..." Tango frowned, struggling to find the words to describe what he saw. It wasn't clear, more blurry than not, but he could make out what everything looked like anyway. "It looks like how your blanket feels."

Zed blinked. "You mean my wool one?"

Tango nodded. "Yeah."

"So, it's... blurry?"

"Blurry," Tango whispered, still looking around. "Blurry..."

Zedaph giggled at him. "I guess you have an entirely new set of vocabulary to learn now that you can see," he said softly and fondly. "What about me? Can you see me?"

Tango had to search for a moment to find where Zedaph was, his eyes widening when they landed on him. "You..." Tears sprung to his eyes. "You're beautiful."

"Impy!" Zedaph called as he searched for the other man, pulling Tango along, who was absolutely fascinated by everything around him. "Impulse?"

"Over here," Impulse shouted, then peeked his head around a tree. "Hi!"

Tango blinked as he stared at Impulse, making the other slightly confused.

"What's with the goofy glasses?" Impulse asked with a laugh as he approached them. "Are these your- Wait." He paused as he noticed Tango's eyes were fixed on him, like he could see him. "You can see?"

Tango smiled. "I can," he said, "and you're so... so..." He sniffled a bit. "So..."

Zedaph laughed a bit. "He's trying to figure out how to describe things," he told Impulse, who was merely staring at Tango in shock. "We're going to have to teach him how to."

"Zed..." Impulse slowly turned to the blonde. "You're incredible."

Zed smiled shyly. "I try."
