Chapter 3
Normally, arriving back to camp with one mouse in the middle of greenleaf causes commotion. Elders start mumbling about "young warriors thinking they can waste the day, and then get away with bringing one measly mouse back to camp", and the leader and deputy will get angry with you.
But when Whitefox entered ThunderClan camp with his ear bleeding and scraps of fur missing from his flank, every single cat started fussing over him. "Great StarClan! Whitefox, what happened?", "Alderscar! Come quickly!", or "Whitefox, you're so hurt!"
Whitefox flattened his ears in annoyance as Honeypetal and Emberleaf rushed towards him. He almost didn't see his brothers, Blueclaw and Yellowbee sitting a fox-length away mumbling to each other. They were the only cats who didn't make a huge deal out of him. Whitefox wasn't sure if it was because they knew it wasn't that big of a deal, or that they knew he didn't like being fussed over, but either way, they didn't rush to try and help him.
"Guys, I'm fine." Whitefox mewed, shaking his mother and father away from him. "I just got into a scuffle over prey, it's not a big deal."
"Oh, of course it isn't, Whitefox," Yellowbee teased. "It's a huge deal!" Blueclaw let out a mrrow of amusement as Whitefox glared at his littermates.
Alderscar, the ThunderClan medicine cat pushed his way through Honeypetal, Emberleaf and Brightpaw, whom had managed to push her way to his side. The dark ginger tom sniffed his ear for any infection-which there weren't any; he'd just gotten the wound-and then sniffed the rest of his body to make sure there were no other wounds. "He's fine," Alderscar announced, and although Whitefox knew he was fine, every cat relaxed. Mouse brains, he thought.
Redstar let out a yowl to make every cat calm down. "Whitefox, what happened?" The ginger she-cat asked the white tom.
Whitefox recounted the entire story to the Clan, leaving out the white flower part. The Clan listened attentitively, making sure they heard every word that the white tom had to say. When he was finished, he watched the leader, waiting for her thoughts.
"So the rogue entered our territory?" Redstar asked.
Whitefox didn't hesitate to answer, "no, he didn't, but he tried to steal my prey. I had stepped outside the territory for a second to catch the mouse, and he just attacked me."
Redstar flattened her ears. "Whitefox, you may have entered his territory. You do realize this right?"
Whitefox shrugged nonchalantly. "Yeah, but he probably doesn't follow the warrior code."
He could feel the entire Clan with eyes on him. They couldn't disagree with him. "Plus, I didn't know that was another cat's territory. We've never seen him before."
The white tom saw multiple warriors nodding in agreement, including the senior warriors, Ambermoon, Snowbush and Dewnose. Redstar sighed and exchanged a look with Dayflower. "Very well. Go ahead with Alderscar to get your ear fixed up, then get some rest."
"I'm fine." Whitefox stated again, flicking his ears. "It doesn't even hurt."
Redstar's bright green eyes narrowed. "That was an order." She mewed before turning, flicking her tail for Dayflower to follow. The white tabby deputy stumbled after her, clearly heavily pregnant with Larkfeather's kits. She should really go to the nursery, Whitefox thought; he knew that queens who were that close to kitting had to stay in the nursery, so he assumed Dayflower would have been in the nursery by now.
He turned to Alderscar, who seemed to be thinking the same thing. "For StarClan's sake, I'm going to confine her to the nursery one of these days," he muttered under his breath. "Come on, Whitefox. Lets get your ear fixed up."
"I swear, my ear is fine." Whitefox mewed. "Don't waste your herbs on me."
Alderscar's amber eyes glistened with amusement. "You heard Redstar," he purred. "That's an order."
Whitefox flattened his ears and glared at the tom, before sighing and trotting after the medicine cat.
That wasn't funny.
