Chapter 16
Yes, I'm writing two chapters in one day. I'm bored and running out of ideas for this book.
WARNING: Panic attack, feeling like you aren't good enough
Virgil sighed, flipping his sketchbook closed. He couldn't find anything engaging to do after his talk with Rose. Not only had he learned a secret about the only person, aside from his brother, that he'd known since childhood, he'd just told her everything that was on his mind.
"Great going, Virge." He muttered to himself. "You don't know how to keep quiet."
He half expected someone, absolutely no one in particular, to make a snarky but well-meaning comment but nothing happened. Virgil tried not to feel down about this. Of course a certain someone wasn't going to be by his side all the time. There were duties they both had to attend to. Still, something worried Virgil about this. He hadn't seen Roman since he'd gotten back.
"If you're so worried about him, find him and talk to him. That's what he did with you a week or so back." He thought.
A week seemed a life-time away. And now there were only two days until Roman chose a new bride or groom and every second that passed, Virgil felt less and less sure that Roman was going to choose him. It had been a stupid fantasy, anyway, helped along partly by the fact that Roman had actually talked to him more than once.
But that's all it was. A fantasy. Someone like Roman, a prince, could never want someone like Virgil, lowly, orphaned, nothing without his job. Virgil wasn't anything, Roman was everything. No one would bat an eyelid if, one day, Virgil just disappeared but if Roman went missing or was kidnapped, time itself would stop. No one cared about Virgil.
"That's not true!" A small voice in Virgil's head called out. "What about Rose? She's your best friend!" It insisted indignantly.
Yes. Princess Rose. Perfect, pretty, well-read and rich. If she went missing then, just like with Roman, time itself would stop. She had been Virgil's friend for years, helped him through panic attacks, accepted him for who he was and had helped him in every way she knew how to. And what had he done for her? Sneered at her choice in boys, be sharp with her and he'd even told her she didn't know anything.
Virgil really was useless.
"You're not." The voice said again, now sounding a lot like Rose. Virgil sighed and clutched his head.
He had to find Roman.

"Um, excuse me?"
Roman knew that voice. He turned around and, just as he'd guessed, Virgil was standing there, awkward and unsure.
"Hi." Virgil said meekly. Roman smiled, hoping that he could reassure Virgil with just a smile. "I, um, I noticed that you haven't really been talking to me since I got back. Not that it's important or anything I just, well, I kinda hoped that...." Virgil trailed off, his face turning red.
"Oh God, I forgot!" Roman said, the smile falling from his face. "I'm sorry, Virgil. It's just there was this whole ordeal with Daniel and-"
"It's fine. I should be the one who's apologising for making you feel guilty. Of course princes have princely duties and-"
"Virgil, you don't need to apologise for anything. Virgil, look at me." Hesitantly, Virgil lifted his eyes to meet Roman's. "If I had any 'prince duties' I would put them all on hold if it meant that I could spend time with you."
Virgil dropped his eyes to the floor, a small smile creeping onto his face. Roman laughed slightly.
"There's the smile we all need to see."
Virgil laughed slightly, feeling as if a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. Maybe he could forget, just for a little while, when he was around Roman. Just maybe...
"Anyway, soon my 'prince duties' will include spending time with you."
"What?" Roman smiled shyly, almost second-guessing himself with that smile.
"As soon as this week is over and mother asks if I've chosen who I want to marry, getting married will be one of my 'prince duties' and then, so would you."
Virgil's brow furrowed for a second before he turned bright red, realising what Roman was saying.
"Are you- Are you asking me to marry you?" Virgil found himself almost whispering. Roman nodded slightly, smiling sheepishly. Virgil mirrored this smile before a huge wave of doubt crashed into him.
Why would he ask you to marry him? Is this prince delusional? You're not good enough for him. You'll never be good enough for him. You're nothing. You're absolutely nothing and he deserves better than you. You'll never be good enough for anyone. You weren't good enough for Issac, you couldn't save him. Why should this be any different? You're nothing. You're nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing!
"Virgil! Virgil!" Virgil heard Roman's voice cut through his blind panic. "Virgil, I want you to focus on my voice. You're going to be fine. You're alright. I've got you."
Virgil shook his arm out of the princes grip, wanting to get as far away as he could from Roman.
"I'm not good enough." He whispered before running away, his lungs burning.
