Chapter 12

WARNING:  Attempted murder

"Heya Daniel."

Daniel whipped around, hiding whatever he was holding behind his back. His eyes narrowed as he surveyed the gardener that had startled him.

"Janus, right?" He asked, turning back to doing whatever he was doing.

"Yep." Janus smiled a bright smile that did not reach his icy eyes, they were cold and untrusting.

"What do you want?" Daniel asked, trying to keep his voice light. Janus shrugged and ran his hand along the wall, leaving thin trails of mud all around the kitchen.

"I want to know what you're doing." He slammed his hand down on the table Daniel was working at. Daniel hissed at him.

"That is none of your business."

"Correction, bitch." Janus hissed, glaring at Daniel. "This is something to do with the prince isn't it?" Daniel said nothing and turned his back on Janus. "If you are going to hurt Prince Roman, then-"

"Oh shut up!" Daniel yelled, corking the vial he was holding. "I know you don't really give a shit about precious Prince Roman. You're just scared for his brother, aren't you?" Janus stared at Daniel, shocked. Daniel grinned. It was a twisted, evil smirk. "Yeah, I know your secrets you dirty little-"

"That's enough."

Daniel and Janus looked up to see who was talking. It was Remus. Daniel glared at Janus, gave a quick, half-hearted bow to Remus and quickly left the room, slipping the vial in his pocket. Remus let out a breath and a high-pitched giggle.

"I've never actually used my commanding voice." He said, laughing a little more. "That was fun."

"Your Highness, is there any particular reason that you are here in the servant's area of the castle?"

"Yeah, actually." Remus sighed. "Can you look after my brother? He's a damn sight more oblivious than he thinks and he won't see Daniel coming."

Janus sighed and grabbed the gardening tools he had dropped. "Your Highness, I know that Virgil and Princess Rose are already looking out for your brother, I don't see why-"

"Two people looking out for him isn't enough." Remus protested.

"Then why don't you watch his back?" Janus fired back. "Instead of getting other people to do it."

Remus opened his mouth but closed it again, rubbing the back of his head awkwardly. "Roman and I aren't on the best speaking terms."

Janus rolled his eyes but nodded. "Sibling rivalry?" Remus nodded and Janus sighed. "Look, it probably isn't my place to say but if you really want to make friends with Prince Roman again, you'll look out for him like a brother should. If you want to end what's happened between you two, then watch his back. Don't get other to do it."

Janus checked his beaten old wristwatch and sighed. "I'd better get back to the gardens. Just... try think about what I said, your Highness."

Roman looked over the top of his notebook at the boy who had just enter the library.

"Are you new?" He asked. He'd honestly never seen this boy in his life.

"Um, yeah." The boy smiled slightly. "I'm Daniel."

"Rose was right." Roman thought. "There's something untrustworthy about this boy." Despite feeling very unnerved by Daniel, Roman smiled at him and put his book down.

"Is there any reason why you're in my private library?" Roman asked, making sure there was an edge to his voice.

Daniel opened his mouth to reply but then thought better of it and closed his mouth again. Obviously disgruntled, he put the tray he was holding down on the table next to where Roman was sitting and stormed out.

"Your brother thought you might need some water." He said before closing the door behind him.

Now there was something definitely up. Remus and Roman hadn't spoken to each other for over a year. Careful not to drop anything, Roman picked up the glass he was meant to drink from. It was very hard to see, but there was a slight tint to the water.

"Well I won't be drinking that." Roman thought, chucking the water out the window and putting the glass back on the tray. He sat back down and opened his notebook, waiting for Daniel to come back. Waiting to see the look on his face when he found out the person who should be dead was not.
