Chapter 26
"Why me?!" Wendy wailed, her fluffy feathers puffed up in terror. Her yellow eyes were wide open as she gazed up at the older red tail. Rolling his light brown eyes, the old hawk snarled, "Ya wanna get home?! Ya have to get across this!" Lowering his head so they were eye to eye, he added, "Plus, you're checking to see if the log is safe to cross."
"Can't we just fly across? You can carry me and-" Wendy began to say but was cut off by a growl. Frightened, she trembled as the older hawk snapped, "You can't fly and you're afraid of heights, remember?! And my wing isn't exactly flying material at the moment so get across the log before I make ya fuzzball!" His talons scraped the ground for extra emphasis as the rain came down harder. Gulping, Wendy turned to face the log bridge. Staring at the rotting wood, she hesitantly stepped onto it.
The log instantly creaked, causing Wendy to jump with fright. She was getting ready to back off of it when the other hawk pushed her forward. Gripping the rotten wood with her sharp little talons, Wendy happened to look down to see the bottom a long ways down. A muddy river ran through the ravine. Shaking, she looked back the way she came at her companion. He merely snarled at her. Whimpering, Wendy fearfully continued crossing, fixing her eyes on the log. It wasn't long until she made it over. Happy she survived, she smiled at the old hawk.
"Rats... ya couldn't make the log break underneath her?" Tiberius muttered, directing his words to the heavens. Huffing, he stepped out onto the log. Everything was going well until both he and Wendy saw the log bridge move slightly. Almost across, the hawk slowly looked down to find the rock that was holding the log in place was slowly coming loose.
A second later, the rock fell, along with the log and one hawk.
