15. Caring Psychopath?

The windowsill groaned in quiet protest as Hisoka propped himself against the ledge. Spying the stalker through peripheral vision, his amber eyes gleamed with amusement.

Always watching me like the psychopath you are. Violet huffed and turned back to the sunset view expanding across the large metropolis city that Heaven's Arena towered over like a God.

Of course, she was enjoying the view. Scenery always calmed her mind and soul, and the magician was far too attentive for that fact to have slipped his notice. She left his question hanging in the air.

Watching the sky, the breeze gently touched her inflamed skin, making a tingling burn sensation. Pain drew her attention to emotions, which continued to tizzy through her chest and mind like a frayed, frizzled, and irreparable tangled ball of yarn. Violet didn't know where to begin cleaning up the sudden emotional disarray.

Several minutes of silence passed. But Hisoka's scrutinising attention was undeniable, prickling her skin the entire time. When she sighed and shifted more, he straightened as if instinctively aware she was preparing to speak. It took a few more minutes before Violet collected enough courage.

"Am I going to jail then?" Her voice was solemn and weak.

Hisoka chuckled. "Whatever for?"

The sound of card shuffling entered the space between them. Every now and then, he would stop, and when she looked over, he was inspecting cards at random, sometimes smirking, other times raising eyebrows at the card faces.

A short sigh sounded, and she didn't even bother to answer his challenge. Serves me right for thinking he would be helpful. Her shoulders slumped forward as she sunk ever deeper into her emotional abyss.

"He attacked you with clear intent to kill, despite calls to stop several times. You acted in self-defence. There are hundreds of witnesses to that fact ~ ♣"

Violet cast her eyes towards Hisoka on his lower perch once more. He was propped on the window sill with one leg dangling over the edge and the other pressed against the far vertical frame. Too tall to fit comfortably within the opening, he managed a version of it making her lips quiver as she fought off the smile. His flexibility astounded her every time he showed off the skill.

"Didn't you say yourself you have no issue killing? You've done it before, yes? What is it about killing this man that is bothering you so much? ~ ♠" His piercing gaze locked her attention with a severe expression.

Hair across her arm stood on end as he went for a death blow, attacking the root of her emotional disarray. Violet turned away, frowning with a slight grumble. What Hisoka hunted for with his penetrative eyes, concern for her well-being or weakness, remained a mystery.

"Well. First. I'm not about to just be dragged off anywhere. I only want to know if I need to jet early or not. I'm no stranger to disappearing when needed."

Hisoka's brows raised even higher than their natural high position; then, his lips tightened into a pursed shape. Lowering his brows to match the hooded position of his eyelids, it was clear that he would not allow her to run.

But how far will he go? I'm not sure he's exactly against a chase, either. Whatever, it's the least of my issues right now. She faced the sunset again, leaving the magician to his dark musing.

"Why am I bothered by killing him? I don't think it has anything to do with that he's dead. He deserved it long ago," Violet said before continuing, "What is it you say? Pruning the unworthy fruit? That's all I did tonight."

A soft chuckle drew her peripheral attention, where she spotted a sadistic grin and glint from his half-lidded eyes.

She shook her head before continuing, "I don't really know. My emotions are a complete mess." Violet huffed. "I guess it's that I lost control. Losing control is something the weak do. Angry or not, I should maintain composure, at least to a degree."

"He's not dead because you lost control. He's dead because he was weak and stupid ~ ♠"

Confusion coloured Violet's face in the form of knitted brows while she held her gaze on the heavens. She shifted slightly and considered his words for a moment. I don't understand what he means. But then my head is still pounding from the fight.

"Your hit may have been the killing blow, but it wouldn't have been if he hadn't braced with Nen at the last minute and taken his medicine like a good boy~ ♣" The magician chuckled, before continuing, "He knew what was about to happen and refused to admit you could be stronger. It was ultimately his choice to die on that hill ~ ♠"

Considering his point momentarily, Violet's body relaxed more than before. Motion danced through the sky as the sun faded sluggishly behind the city line. The city's lower levels were already plagued by the darkness of the night. The deadly pair were high enough that the last residual glimmers of the day still reached them. The sky was a symphony of vibrant red, crimson, yellow, and orange hues that fought at the top of the city line for the time. The coloured light symphony abated the need for street lights, but it was swiftly being overwhelmed.

A straightened spine and rounded shoulders allowed Violet's head to sit tall again. She welcomed the cool night breeze before releasing the visiting air along with more tension. This continued for several breaths. Throbbing from the swelling of the unchecked battle injuries pounded against her head, worsening as time passed.

Despite slight vertigo and her height, a distinct impression said the moment Hisoka arrived, she would not fall; he wouldn't let that happen. The why or how of that knowledge remained beyond her grasp.

"There must be some repercussions for what I did, though?"

"I kill my opponents all the time. Deaths happen in the fights. I did love what you did with the head afterwards. Beautifully executed ~ ♥"

Violet's eyes rolled like loose marbles, and she could practically hear his smirk without seeing it. Of course, you loved that part.

Darkness took exponential ground in its fight against the sun, which had to relent and set a faster pace of retreat. Hisoka shifted and jumped to the back of the pole to sit a few feet behind Violet. With his back leaned against the outer wall of the building, the magician relaxed into his new perch.

Violet sighed and effortlessly spun around on the pole to face him. "I haven't been focusing on my Nen skills. I suppose I was frustrated because if I had trained my Nen, maybe I wouldn't have ended up in such a pathetic position." She sighed, admitting her biggest frustration. However, the nagging and unexplained fear and flight or flight response remained confusing and present.

"Perhaps you should consider finding a teacher ~ ♠ "

"Wait. There are teachers for Nen?" Violet's brows knitted again, frowning in frustration. Why didn't he say that sooner? Oh, right. I've been avoiding him like the plague he is.

Hisoka's features twisted in delight. "Yes. It would be wise to find one, so you can continue to grow. They can be difficult to locate, mind you. Your skills are exceptional but not complete. How long have you been using Ko?"

Violet raised a single eyebrow, trying to keep her complete confusion hidden. "No, I just used Nen in the fight, not Ko..."

"Ko is a Nen technique. Tonight was your first time using it, wasn't it? ~ ♥"

Violet exhaled in exasperation and turned her head away, attempting to hide her frown and the heat of embarrassment growing in her cheeks as she was caught in ignorance.

"Look. I just copied what the other guy was doing. Of course, I improved it," she responded with nonchalant confidence. "Not that it says much since it was dead obvious how bad he was at it. I quite enjoy beating an enemy with their own weapons. It makes the defeat that much sweeter."

Hisoka stared with frozen surprise before bursting into laughter as he simultaneously tried to curb it with a hand over his face again. "Ohhhh! You do make it hard to control myself, darling ~ ♥"

His bloodlust seeped out. It stuck her skin differently than what he released during the fight; similar but different.

"Oh! That reminds me! Your fucking bloodlust was Not helpful! I've told you before! I can take care of myself!" Violet chastised the grim reaper loudly as he sneered in amusement. "I just about missed my chance to smash that asshole into oblivion because your bloodlust was distracting me!"

"Most would be smart enough to show some fear when I release such bloodlust point-blank ~♣"

"Most sound like they're boring and weak then." A slight smile played on her lips.

Hisoka raised an eyebrow before reaching forward; he lifted Violet's chin with his right hand and angled her face. The damage was decent; Violet knew the cheekbone needed to be re-set. Medical attention would be required, and soon, or there could be permanent effects.

A near pitter-patter of fluttering heartbeats responded to his touch. She ground her teeth, hating that she responded in such a way.

He's a psychopath! Why does my body always respond to him like this? It makes no sense at all!

A mixture of warring emotions bombarded her chest as body and mind clashed. The resolve to stop it or push him away was as non-existent as her comprehension. When he released her chin, Violet's body screamed for his touch again. Guilt and shame swiftly followed the physical response.

Heat ran into Violet's face, like a furnace working overtime, and forced her into silence when his eyes locked on her own. The orbs flickered in the dim sunset, creating bright hues of yellow and the odd brown flash along his iris. The colours played together in a mesmerising ballet, creating a honey-golden glow.

His eyes are so unique. It's so rare to see amber eyes, but they're terrifying as much as captivating.

The sun finally lost its battle with the night, but all Violet could see was the striking sunset glow of those piercing eyes, the psychopath that came to ensure she was safe, physically and mentally. The blaring alarms her brain continued to sound finally reached her. Hisoka was dangerous to all that crossed his path, and this was a wreckless turn to take on her journey. Hisoka grasped her injured hand, drawing attention back to his touch.

"I did notice this was not an injury you received in the fight. Hm? ~♠"

"I was angry and punched a locker. It's not a big deal. It will heal quickly." Violet pulled her hand back. "I should go inside. I need to see about my winnings and medical attention. I haven't eaten dinner yet, either."

Hisoka smirked and whispered, "Always running away. It just drives a predator like me to chase harder~ ♦"

With their closeness, every word was clear, and the furnace feeding her face drove heat even faster to the area. She looked away. Before she could counter, Hisoka pulled her tightly into himself. The heat of his skin made her heart peace.

"Hisoka. What—"

"You're too tired to make the jump safely. Let me do it for you ~ ♥"

Before she could protest, he made a clean leap from the pole to the window. She closed her eyes tightly and grabbed his shirt for support. The next thing Violet knew, her feet were back on the solid ground of Heaven's Arena hallway.

"Let's go see about your winnings and when your next fight will be held ~ ♥"
