Oh Another Part

Have I posted something like this before? I got deja vu halfway through writing it...

So I'm watching Jack's playthrough of Until Dawn, a horror video game that's kind of inspired by cliche type horror movies in tone but it does have it's twists. I've already watched Mark's playthrough. I can't say I'm a fan of the game, sadly. They used motion capture to get the characters to be expressive which is super neat, but the characters (who are all supposed to be highschoolers) all look like the people voicing them which kind of ruins the illusion for me a little. And the dialogue is just weird, both in delivery and in writing. It sounds super fake to me which, again, ruins the immersion. And the motion capture does make some of the expressions look funny.

I'd say spoiler warning but the game is from 2015 so...

All my knowledge of horror comes from watching YouTubers play scary games (although I normally don't watch those anyway) and from watching reviews of horror movies. I like watching reviews, especially if I have little interest in the thing being reviewed. I just like reviewers reactions and how they explain stuff. But yeah, I have little knowledge in the horror genre and even less on video games themselves so take what I say with a grain of salt.

I think the Wendigos are cool villains. The backstory of how they came/come to be is super sad but I love that they're from actual Native American... folklore? Mythology? Anyway I thought that was cool. It turned the game from a typical slasher type scenario to a monster horror thing.

Josh being the psycho was so, so obvious to me. Why? Speech patterns. The boy went to all the trouble of having a mask and disguising his voice but his speech patterns remained exactly the same. He had a pretty distinct speech pattern too! Soft spoken, he didn't even try to change how he phrases things or where he puts emphasis, just so, so glaringly obvious to me. Maybe that's because I put so much importance on speech patterns so I pay extra close attention to them. They're such an important part of identifying someone.

The graphics are nice. I wish everything was a little more matte, everything was sort of shiny. It's a big budget game, made by a big company, so I guess I expected less shine? For some reason I thought the odd shiny quality was mainly an indie game thing because of low budget. Most video games do have a weird shininess to them though, don't they? So not too much complaining there.

I didn't like the characters. I'm not sure I'm supposed to. Even the nice ones just didn't click with me. Although after seeing the stuff about how Josh showed signs of being schizophrenic, which going back and re-watching the stuff with him is definitely accurate, and that he wasn't being treated right for it, I feel really bad for him. He was mentally ill and needed help that he just wasn't getting. He was being misdiagnosed and just...poor guy. And you aren't given an option to help him either, he either dies or becomes a Wendigo.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. I don't think anyone wanted to hear them but I was bored so *shrug*
