Canto XVIII: Love on the Mountain
Read in Landscape.
After the peace had been forged in that place
Well so that each with a gift had been graced.
Granted by other who worked in their craft
Forging an alliance so long it may last.
Crew did yet tarry before they depart
Dwelling in place where this venture had start.
Maiden and man did now often yet go
Far from the places they dwelled and abode.
Wandering country for which they did strive
Out on the ocean when waves they did bide.
Walking so all that abounds they could see
Land that was shrouded in deepest of leaves.
Fair were the days when in place they did dwell
Deep where the forest and hills did yet swell.
High was the bliss of this land they did roam
Bringing to mind the maiden's own home.
Great was the friendship for maid and the man.
Greater than either the pair had yet planned.
Often, they left and those hills they did walk
Hidden in nature the pair would then talk.
Telling the other of hopes they did hold
Still though her secret was kept as her goal.
Finally, day of departure had come
Making the pair of them saddened and dumb.
Daring not speak like in last of those days
Captain had left and this trail had now blazed.
Leaving his country and roaming the seas
Far from their home on his sovereign's own plea.
Still though the maiden would make of it best
Feeling in heart what was strangest behest
Knowing that day for their joy would not last
Soon into sorrow the pair would be cast.
Looking for way that she'll salvage the day
Maiden through forest her head does now sway.
Searching for place where the pair could now roam
Bringing to mind their own mem'ries of home.
Seeing a mountain, the maiden now bid
Captain to climb to the top that was hid.
Deep in the green where no man could yet see
All that was laid in the depths of the trees.
Setting on venture the pair did now climb
Hoping that respite the two would there find
Up on the mountain so hidden away
Covered by leaves from the harshness of day.
Upward they strove and then came to a glade
Sitting so view of the earth could be made.
Gazing on place that was tender and fair
Lifting from shoulders their burdens and cares.
Maiden now spoke to herself of the place
Singing to world of its beauty and grace.
"The hills are full with trees so green
That cover earth as far as seen,
And make it fair and make it good
For all in land that's current stood.
No fairer place except for home
I've found in all the lands we've roamed.
For seldom sight as well is seen
As one amongst these hills so green.
Its shinning rivers fill with life,
That eases all the beastly strife
Of creatures found in forest deep
That grow within this ancient keep.
In world we live this gift's so rare
To see a land so good and fair,
Nor peace I feel is seldom found
In all the lands by earth yet bound..."
After she's finished, they sitting now rest
Weary from road that their vigor had test.
Long did they lay and their secrets they gave
Strengthening pact that was already made.
Telling the other of their hopes and their dreams
Knowing that speaking a peace would now bring.
Captain then spoke of his love for the maid
All of his longings unwitting he gave.
Telling his lover his secrets of heart
Knowing not Peasant was playing this part.
"In the land from which sailors did come from and leave
There's a maid that I left to whom noble is sworn to in heart
I venture so far from that serf though my soul it did grieve
But yet still was I forced to now strive in my labor this part.
That my lord who is kin may yet garner what's good in this land
From here gaining a place from which all of his ambitions may start.
So that people of France in this foreign a place may yet stand
By the strength of my arm, I am bidden complete what is task.
Though this voyage was hard and there's nothing that went as was planned
To this thing and this hope does this noble and captain now clasp.
That to woman I quick may return when this voyage is done,
And yet find her the maiden so prince may yet cling to her fast.
While my days are yet set in this land that is under the sun.
So, I'll see yet again who I long for with whole of my soul
That when after this course that is bidden by Lord has been run
I may ask that she's bride as the price for me reaching this goal."
Heart of the maiden now leapt in her chest
Hearing with joy what the prince would request
Once he was favored for task he completes
Courage he sowed and their love would he reap.
Using his glory to claim as his bride
Maid who unknowing now laid at his side.
Still not a word did the woman now say
Fearing that speaking would give her away.
Servant to captain was maid he had left
One whom he thought had been surely bereft
Staying in country not laying on ground
Deep in the glade where the prince was now found.
After in silence the pair did now dwell
Long till the shadows of earth did then swell.
Happy in place they had found to now hide
Shortly before they return to their bind.
Bliss was now found again at this place
Fleeting and quick as the time did yet race.
Sun did now fall like a man into grave
Down on the place that the maiden was laid.
Sinking to west in the skies it did go
Filling the air with her dread and her woe.
Peasant now sensed what was price that be paid
Bargain in heart that the maiden had made
Back when with prince she decided to leave
Stowing away though her soul it did grieve.
Time was now coming when debt would be paid
Down in the ground would the maiden be laid.
Far from her family and land where she lived
Down to the earth would the servant be give.
Weight of that promise did fall on her mind
Peace and her comfort no longer she finds.
Sweat did now fall as though blood from her skin
Fear from the maiden her peace did now rend.
Filling her heart with a dread she now shifts
Kneeling she prays to her God for a gift.
Asking that Lord may yet grant her more time
Staying this fate and releasing her bind.
Letting her longer on earth to be bound
Standing by prince who by side was now found.
"I ask that burden give to maid be cast away
That peasant need not lie in deepest grave,
Or die for sake of love though love be great
Will master hear my cry and alter fate?
This man does maiden love with very soul
To spend my days with prince is servant's goal.
Yet heaven bids that diff'rent will be wrought
And sep'rate end for maid will soon be brought
On head of one who longs on earth to stay
Though spirit up to glories surely gave.
I ask this cup from hand of maid will pass,
And death is far from servant heaving cast.
But still for love I ever on would go
So let your will decide this maiden's role.
Though harsh the fate which servant's doom to bear
Still onward serf will press and death will dare."
Rising from ground did her dread not abate
Still she now felt what she bore as her fate.
Soon to a grave would the maiden descend
Down into earth where she'll lay at the end.
Turning she sees who was set by her side
Prince who in slumber so deep did now lie.
Shaking she wakes him from sleep he did take
Bidding him rise to the world he did wake.
Helping him up they do quickly now leave
Far from this place though their hearts it does grieve.
Both of them felt in the air that is thick
Danger to which they do currently drift.
Knowing what bides in the place they do go
Still on to fate does the pair of them strow.
