CHAPTER 10: AALOO K PARATHEY
MAHEEN’S POV
“Mahrukh Jalal?”
“Mahrukh Jalal…… Mahrukh!”
“Hussain was finding this girl, may be she is his… girlfriend? Eeiieew no! it sounds gross”
“Q Maheen? Why does it sound gross to you? us ki life hea, uski merzi, uski girlfriend hea tumhen kia? Han!”
“ch! But still…. Am one of the biggest dhoomie, and I have never heard about this GF of Hussain”
“Oh! Yeah right… he will announce it on Face book or tweet it when he will have a girlfriend, yeah? idiot Maheen! This is his personal life, don’t forget”
I pouted looking at myself in the mirror as I kept on blabbering to myself, I was actually figuring out who this Mahrukh Jalal could be? And why was he searching her? agar girl friend hui na to…. Jamal ghota pila dena hea mein ne usey.
“but he acted as if he himself doesn’t know her and was meeting her for the first time” Hussain’s reaction suddenly popped up in mind and for a moment I felt relieved, a smile appeared on my face as I sighed deep.
“Tobah hea! Mein to aesey andazey laga rahi hoon jesey…. Mein ne girl friend ban jana hea uski” I rolled my eyes as I turned and head back to my bed, where I had scattered my drawing stuff, I had to finish my assignment and then the most important task…. My update was pending and I was being under constant bombardment from my lovely readers.
After completing my assignment I gathered my stuff and kept things over my study table.
“Maheen chal! Update ker de, nai to buhat galiyan khaye gi tu” sighing a little I jumped up on the bed, setting both the pillows at my back I drapped the quilt over my legs and kept the laptop in my lap. Turning it on I opened my story folder and once the document popped up I started typing.
I don’t even know what condition she might be in and I just wanted to see her atleast once let alone talk to her, Insomnia had taken over me for the whole past week as all I could do is constantly thinking about her. I can’t beat this…this loneliness. I have to go talk to her.
“Awww Hussain! poor you, I don’t want to make you feel bad you know but kia karoon…. this stupid plot twist is making me do this torture to you” I pouted as I wrote Hussain’s pov after a long time in the story as my readers were getting berserk over me not mentioning his POV after he broke up with Lia.
Mama, mein ne ap se kaha na mujhe bhook nai hai
Mein janta hoon isey kiss cheez ki bhook hai.
“Shehry you are so gone, nai chadna hun Hussain tenu” I literally chuckled writing Shehry’s dialogues.
Shut the eff up!! Har cheez mazaak nai hotii
Acha? To phir kisi ka dil torrna bhi mazaak nai hota.
SHUT UP!!
Hussain’s blood was boiling in rage when he lunged on Shehry and both grabbed each other’s collars.
“This is definitely something I don’t want you two to do, you know you two just look good in those chummy chummy wale happy bromance moments, but ch! Being a writer kia kia kerna perta hea humein” I shook my head disapprovingly as I kept on writing the intense scene between Shehry and Hussain.
She almost got raped Hussain!
Shehry… Shehry saved her life.
“ayeee hayeee! Naira sahiba kesey fatafat apne piya ji ki tareef shuroo ker di, clever girl!” I laughed as I wrote her dialogue.
She is never coming back here. Her parents found out about Yaari.
Writing this line I could feel the pain, seriously all the fun, the love that spark was gone and now Hussain and Lia both were in such miserable situations.
I had never thought I’d cry over a girl, but here I was not just crying but suffering from the pain of loosing her. I felt my brain would explode any second I just wanted to crash my car with something and end my story right there and then.
I let go of that one person I loved most. Maleeha
But she was gone…forever.
“Ahhh!” my fingers stopped typing as I felt it was enough for the moment I couldn’t even bare the pain till here, agey likhne ki himmat nai ho rai thi, I was already in tears.
“Maheen Imran you suck okay! Itna bhi koi kerta hea bhala? Poor Hussain, I wish I could hug you right now, tight wala” I talked to myself as I literally felt bad for him.
“Acha hea that you people don’t read out stories, I never want to give you any pain” I said as I gave my chapter the proper title as “Gone Forver” and after publishing it I shut my laptop and laid back on the bed, with my eyes wide open fixed on the ceiling.
I was about to close my eyes when a weak knock on the door startled me and I got up straight on my bed, frowning a little I jumped down.
“Who is this?” I asked going closer to the door.
“Kholiye” hearing a girl’s voice I got shocked, wo bhi urdu? God! I hurriedly turned the lock and opened the door finding a beautiful young girl standing there; her expressions a mixture of nervousness and worry, I looked her head to toe she was dressed up in a typical Pakistani dress, a wheeler was placed near her feet and she was carrying a big size carten in her hands.
“Assalam-o-alaikum! Mein Mahrukh…
“Mahrukh Jalal?” I cut her up in the middle and she frowned, then gave a quick nod and for a moment that Jamal ghota came in my mind, New York mein pata nai kahan milta ho ga?
“Oh! Am sorry please come in” my gaze shifted on the huge size box and I slapped my self mentally, she stepped in and I helped her in carrying the box inside, putting the box on the table she turned and dragged the wheeler inside, I shut the door getting that she was going to be my room mate.
“Allah ji! Ye meri sotan he mili thi Ap ko, as my room mate?” I thought to myself.
“Ap mujhe janti hen?” she asked looking at me, her face was smiling but the smile was glum… hard to understand if it was a grim or a grin?
“Ap ko kon nahee janta? Ap to famous honey wali hen jald he” I said smiling and the smile gone away from her face as she looked at me worriedly.
“Matlab? Mein… famous?” she asked unable to get anything and I laughed, shaking head.
“Nothing I was just joking, by the way am Maheen, Maheen Imran naam to suna he ho ga?” I flaunted dramatically extending my hand towards her and she looked at my face with a weird expression then looked down at my hand and held it, we shook hands and she gave a small smile.
“So we are room mates, right?” I asked and she nodded her head as if wasn’t sure much.
“Ye… yahan rakh doon mein?” she pointed towards the free space near the study table before picking up the box and I gawked at her face for a moment.
“Itni tameez? Hayee Allah, tumharey sath reh ker thori buhat mujhe bhi aa he jae gi lagta hea” I chuckled and she smiled, still not understanding my stupidity.
“This is OUR room baby! Like both our’s so jo jahan rakhna hea rakho…. Mauj karo yar!” I lightly patted her shoulder saying casually falling on my bed and she gasped.
“Oho! Giri nai hoon don’t worry…. Style hea mera” I winked at her and she smiled.
I lay in my bed, keeping my notes in front of my face pretending to read but sideways I was observing that beauty, busy in adjusting her stuff into the cupboard.
“Um suno!” she turned to look at me and I hurriedly looked at my notes before looking back at her, completely acting oblivious.
“Yeah?” I asked.
“Am taking this side of the cupboard, it’s fine, yea?” she pointed towards the left side and I showed her a thumbs up.
“Baich dey!.... um I mean le ley!” I said with a huge smile and she chuckled lightly, I guess aahista aahista samajhne lagi thi bachi mujhe.
“bari piyari hea wesey yar! Hussain ji! Sahee ja rahe ho han!”I said to myself as she kept on placing things in the cupboard, then she turned and held up the box trying to place it on her bed but failed.
“You can do it later yar! You look tired” I got up from the bed and headed in her direction.
“Naheen, am fine” she smiled and turned back to the box, I bent down and gave her a hand…. Together we held the box from the floor and placed it over her bed.
“I can help, though I suck at managing things but still….” I shrugged my shoulder saying and she smiled, saying nothing.
“Mashriki lerki ki khamoshi mein us ki haan hoti hea” I said narrowing my eyes and she chuckled a little, understanding my statement.
We started taking things out of the box, books, journals, and pencil carrier, diary, and news papers… newspapers? Seriously? I looked side ways at her.
“Hussain? ye to bilkul wesi nai lagti… tumharey type ki I mean” I thought as I helped her adjusting things on the study table.
I turned back to her, finding her stood there like in some kind of a trance, her eyes fixed upon something in her hand, I went closer… a photo frame.
“Aha! Hussain ki tasveer ho gi zaroor” I thought but when I headed closer to her I found a young pretty girl, hugging Mahrukh from the back in the frame…. They both resembled a lot.
“Sister?” I asked and she at once looked up at me, her eyes were slightly red.
“Yeah! choti behen hea” she smiled looking down at the picture, she was indeed beautiful.
“You are missing her, right?” I asked and she nodded her head, placing the frame on the study table.
“mujhe aadat he nai hea us k bager rehney ki, it’s the first time ever that am that far from her” Mahrukh said, her eyes still on the frame. “Pata nai wo kesey reh rahi hogi mere bager?” she almost said to herself and I placed my hand over her shoulder.
“Oho! Come on…she must be happy, think positive” I said and she looked at me.
“tumharey he jesi hea thori thori” Mahrukh smiled.
“Really? chalo phir consider me as her, masla he muk gaya” I said popping my eyes out and she smiled, nodding her head. I was kind of liking this girl, jamal ghotey wala plan cancel.
“Which department?” she asked.
“Architecture” I stated. “and you?” Of course Hussain waley mein he hogi I thought.
“Textile designing” she told me and I sighed in relief, mentally.
“Oh! Sounds great” I said and she smiled.
“Um.. Acha Mahrukh!” maheen pooch he le, tujh se raha nai jaye ga…tu or tera halka pait I thought before calling her.
“Do you know Hussain? umm… Hussain Asif?” I asked narrowing my eyes, being very cautious and she frowned.
“Nahee” she said and I was like ub affair hea bhi to chupane di ki lorr kuriye?
“Kon hen wo?” she asked simply and I smiled shaking head.
“He studies here, actually he was finding you the other day… that’s how I came to know your full name” I told her and she frowned, a little worry appeared on her face.
“Finding me?” she asked. “But I don’t know anyone here, why would any one be finding me?” She asked, almost to herself and I shrugged my shoulders.
“Chalo koi nai, he is a friend actually” I told her, feeling all ga ga inside. “Kal milwa doon gi tumhen us se, theek?” I asked and she nodded her head a little, uncertainly.
“You look tired Mahrukh! We should sleep, tomorrow is school yar!” I yawned as I headed towards my bed.
Falling down in my cozy bed I shut my eyes….. it means ye Hussain ki girl friend nai! Ub aaye gi sakoon ki neend tujhe Mahenn! So jao shabash.
“Hey Mahrukh! do you like aaloo ke parathey?”I asked removing the quilt from my face and she frowned, then smiled and nodded her head.
“Good! I like them too” I chirped and she chuckled, I pulled my face inside and fell asleep instantly.
************
Next morning I had consecutive lectures, first Basic drafting, and then Foundation drawing and then sculpture… I got so exhausted in the morning I made that lunch and now these tiring classes, I just forgot about telling Hussain about Mahrukh. Once I got free I almost ran towards Hussain’s department, not that far from mine.
“Hey! Hello Jenny! Have you seen Hussain?” I was looking around to find him when I saw a farandii saheli of Hussain.
“yup! He must be in the theatre right now” she told me and I smiled, running towards the theatre I halted in front of the entrance and taking my phone out from my pocket I checked my face in the screen.
“God! Maheen such a mess you are looking, itna bhi kia marathon lagani thi tum ne” I cursed myself mentally, dusting my dress off I slowly peaked in, my eyes searched for that one particular face. I entered in…. it was a huge theatre hall built on Shakespearean theatre style, like in a typical huge arc.
Students were all gathered in the lowest rows, as I entered from the back door so I had to step down to look for Hussain.
“hey! There he is… hero!” finally I caught his sight; he was standing on the stage above with a girl standing near him. Slowly I moved forward silently, stepping down I stood at the side way of the theatre, keeping my bag down near my feet I crossed my arms and leaned with the back wall.
My gaze fixed over Hussain….. he looked deep into his character.
“No, I can’t… I have lost her, I have lost her” Hussain wept as he uttered those words and for a moment it all felt so real to me, my heart ached looking at him in this condition; he looked broken… shattered.
What an actor he was, qasmey! Dil le gaya munda, fir ek variii
“It was destined to be happened Hussain!” the girl standing near him said, while Hussain broke down over his knees, making my heart scream in pain. Sambhal apney ap nu kuriye! Acting kerda piya ea munda… I calm my pants down and I felt what my readers must have gone through after reading the past few chapters.
“But I did this to her, I let her get… get raped, I let her get hurt. How could I do this to her?” Hussain sobbed in a silent painful way as he said those words and I felt… something
Aesa q lag raha tha jesey ye sab… ye sab kuch jana pehchana sa tha, kuch kuch meri kahani wali situation nai thi ye? I frowned but then shook the thoughts away as I concentrated on the fine piece of acting in front of my eyes.
HUSSAIN’S POV
“You need to calm down Hussain!” She placed her hand over my shoulder as I wept.
“No, I can’t… I have lost her, I have lost her” I wept falling down over my knees.
“It was destined to be happened Hussain!” Saly placed both her hands over my shoulders as she bent down on the wooden floor, to my level.
“But I did this to her, I let her get… get raped, I let her get hurt. How could I do this to her?” tears rolled down my cheeks, I could hear whispers.
“Hussain! Regret won’t bring her back”
“Nothing can bring her back Saly! Nothing can bring her back… she is gone forever” I hide my face in my palms as I broke into a silent sob.
Slowly Saly got up to her feet and left… though my face was hidden in my hands still I could sense the movements around me, I removed my hands from my face and looked up… at a distance I saw her coming towards me, she was wearing a white dress and her hair all lose at her sides. I got on my feet and took a step towards her when she stopped me with raising her hand.
“No! don’t come near me” her words breaking me even more.
“please! Please Lisa! Please don’t go, don’t leave me alone” I said, as my vision got blur, tears welled up again.
“You have lost me Hussain! you have lost me forever” she said before slowly stepping back and getting disappeared from the scene, I fell over my knees once again as I broke down and for a couple of moments I couldn’t look up… despite the applause and whispers coming from my class mates I just remained there on the wooden cold stage.
“hey! Hussain well done mate” I felt a hand patting my shoulder and I looked up, wiping the moisture from my eyes I got up and smiled.
“Wow! You don’t even need any glycerine for crying man!” Naina, my classmate an Indian girl came near me, still clapping her hands.
“Am a natural you know” I winked jerking my collar up and she giggled.
“Well done Hussain!”
“Excellent job!” my class fellows were praising me.
“A very natural one I must say boy! And a well written script” My professor Mr. Stark announced, showing me a thumbs up from a distance and I smiled.
“Thanks Sir!” I yelled as I took up my bag and notes from the side of the stage and headed down when I halted in my tracks, finding her standing there with her arms crossed and a smile plastered on her face….
“Hey! Maheen” I almost ran towards her and she got straighten up. “Good to see you girl!” I extended my hand and we shook up.
“Good to see you Sir!” she said bowing down a little and I narrowed my eyes. “What a natural adaaakar you are, I couldn’t believe my eyes Hussain it was fantastic” She added and I chuckled.
“Thanks a lot” I kept my hand over my heart as I said. “I told you that day, remember… you just don’t know me yet” I winked at her and found a little crimson on her cheeks.
“By the way! You? here? khair thi?” I asked and she opened her mouth to say something when I bent a little towards her. “Yaad aa rai thi meri, right?” I asked moving my eyebrows up and down and she blushed saying nothing. “Hayeeee!” I kept my hand over my heart.
“Koi yad wad nai aa rai thi, bhook lag rai thi mujhe bus” she said smiling and bending down she picked up bag from the floor.
“Bhook? To mujhe khao gi kia?” I asked with a horrified expression and she chukled, shaking her head.
“Naheen! Tumhen nai, tumharey sath khaoon gi…” she said giving emphasis on every word. “I can’t eat alone, you know” she added and I smiled.
“Chalo phir” I asked and we stepped towards the exit of the hall, coming out I turned to left towards the Cafeteria.
“Oye! Romeo! Kithey?” hearing her at my back and I turned finding her standing there with her hands on her waist.
“I thought you were hungry” I said in a duh tone and she made a face rolling her eyes.
“I am, chalo ub” she stepped towards me and holding my wrist she almost dragged me at her back.
“Why do I have this feeling that you are kidnapping me or something” I said chuckling as she kept on walking towards dunno where. “I can do teakwondo, you know” I added seriously and she halted in her tracks, turning to face me she frowned and I hide my grin.
“So?’ she asked, her eyes popping out. Her lips made a perfect O when she said and for a moment my gaze got fixed on them….
“Nai, I mean I thought to just warn you… koi rape shape kerne ki koshish na kerna werna….”I trailed off as her face went dangerously red as if all the blood just jumped up in her cheeks.
“God! Hussain you are….” She went speechless and I tried hard to control my laughter..
“Hath to aesey he pakra hua hea jesey iradey theek na hon ap key” I said, biting my lip to avoid laughing as her gaze went down to her hand holding my wrist tightly and the blush came again.
“Oh! Sorry!” she gaped at once and was about to leave my wrist when I grabbed her hand and she looked up at my face with a blank expression.
“Mazak ker ra tha’ I bent a little towards her and touched her blushed up nose with the tip of my finger. “chalo ub, am hungry” I added and walked past her with her hand in mine.
“Where are we going by the way?” I asked as I was a step ahead her and I didn’t now kahan le ja rahi thi mujhe.
“umm…. Textile department” she said and I turned to look at her, she was still total crimson.
“You are biting your lip Maheen” I just said aewaeen as my gaze shifted down to her lower lip folded in between her teeth.
“So? I mean, why do you boys all the time asking stupid questions?” She said as she started walking ahead me and I chuckled. Oye itna gussa?
“Why can’t we bite our lip? Tum lerkey nai kerte kia?” she said in an irritated tone and I laughed.
“No we don’t bite our lips… not at least our own” she halted in her track as it slipped from my mouth and looked at my face with a duh expression, I guess I was all red now.
“Um I mean… um….
“Hussain! you are blushing” She pointed at my face and I frowned when she burst up laughing and I rolled my eyes.
“Yeah! very funny” I said slapping the back of her head lightly as we walked towards the textile department and she kept on giggling, while I kept on looking at her side ways….
Why do girls blush that much? A question popped out in my mind but I couldn’t dare to ask, so I kept my mouth shut with a smile on my lips.
“Muskura kun rae ho?” She asked, I didn’t know she was observing me.
“Aewaeen, meri merzi” I said casually and she shook her head, saying something which I didn’t get.
She was pretty I must say….
MAHRUKH’S POV
I was busy in noting down the notes from the board, our weaving teacher had just briefed us about the whole procedure and left the lecture hall, many students were leaving and few still noting down the points.
“Hey! Mahrukh!” suddenly I heard somebody calling my name and I looked up, finding Maheen standing at the door frame waving her hand violently at me. I smiled and waved back.
“Chalo mein tumhen lene aai hoon” She yelled excitedly.
“Maheen I need to copy the notes, am sorry” I pouted and right when she was about to say something a boy entered in the class, he looked Asian to me, Pakistani I guess.
“Hath to aesey hila rai theen jesey Lahore airport per tumhari khala aai hon… hajj ker key” He said rolling his eyes and Maheen slapped his arm while I smiled, he observed her correctly.
“Hi! Mahrukh right?” he looked at me and I smiled nodding my head.
“Am Hussain!” he said and I understood the scene, is se milwaney ka keh rai thi Maheen mujhe.
“You guys have fun, I have to note it down. Can’t come” I pointed my pen towards the board and Hussain turned to look at it.
“Oye hoye hoye hoye!Look at the writing….paaon se likhta hea tumhara professor?” he made a face looking at the scrambles and I chuckled lightly.
“Do you have your phone with you?” Hussain asked looking at me and I frowned, before nodding my head.
“Can I have it?” He almost ran up towards my seat and I took out my phone from my bag, unable to get what he was up to. He took the phone from my hand and ran back, down towards the stage.
He stood in front of the board and keeping my phone at the front he took out few pics and I smiled knowing what was he up to.
“Wah! You are clever han” Maheen patted his shoulder and he bent down towards her face making her bend back a little.
“Kaha tha na… you just don’t know me yet” Hussain said and Maheen rolled her eyes, I got up packing my stuff in my bag and stepped down where they were standing… staring into each others eyes.
I cleared my throat a little and Hussain looked at me at once, extending my phone towards me.
“Here you go! ub araam se copy kerna ye keerey makorey” He said and I smiled.
“Thanks” I said taking my phone back.
“The pleasure is all mine” he kept his hand over his heart bowing a little down and I looked at Maheen.
“Drameybaaz hen janab” she told me and Hussain at once looked at her frowning. “Oh! I mean…actor. Actor hen, studying Film and Media here” she corrected her at once and I smiled.
“Now please lets move am famished” Maheen said and three of us headed towards one of the front lawns in my department.
“Mahrukh! I have something for you” we sat down on the warm comforting grass when Hussain said keeping his bag in his lap and started looking for something inside, while Maheen was busy taking out a lunch box from her bag.
“here! Waqas has given it for you” Hussain handed me an envelope and I looked at him.
“Waqas?... kon?”
“Oh! Sorry sorry, not Waqas… actually Nosh api ne diya hea. You know her? Nosheen Khurram? I guess you two met at the airport” Hussain corrected himself and I nodded.
“Yeah! I met here there, thanks” I kept the envelope in my bag, wondering what might it be and he smiled.
“Aaloo key parathey?” Hussain looked at the lunch box and almost yelled, Maheen giggled.
“you made them?” Hussain asked, as he tasted and Maheen at once bent near his face making my eyes popped out…..
“You just don’t know me yet” She mimicked his tone and Hussain laughed. Ek he jesey hen dono I smiled, as I tasted and indeed they were yummy.
“You have got great taste in your hands Maheen, seriously” I said and she smiled.
“Thankyou” she smiled sweetly.
We started eating those yummy aaloo ke parathey, they were so like the ones Amaan used to make for us back in Pakistan.
“What happened?” Hussain remained quiet when Maheen asked.
“Nothing much!” He smiled, looking down. ‘it’s just that you are constantly reminding me of some one” He added and looked at her face.
“In aaloo k parathon se to mein tumhen bus tumhari dadi ki he yad dila sakti hoon, Hussain!” Maheen said seriously and both of us laughed, Hussain shook his head.
“Do you believe in love which is completely unseen, like you haven’t met her, you have never talked to her… but still you feel for her something… something beyond words could explain” Hussain looked at me, all at once he looked quite serious and mature.
“I think this kind of love doesn’t exist now days” I said simply and he shook his head.
“Then I must have come from some past planets….. Destroyed long ago” He said dramatically and I chuckled, I noticed Maheen was looking at his face forgetting about the morsel in her hand.
Hussain looked at Maheen and then looking back at me he winked, before grabbing her hand and raising it up to his mouth.
“What?” Maheen gaped as he ate the morsel from her hand.
“Tum to kha nai rahi theen yawr….” Hussain said calmly while Maheen blushed hard, I hide my smile and kept on eating mine.
“Acha you tell me, do you believe in it?’ he asked now looking at Maheen who rolled her eyes.
“Mujhe koi nai pata wata” she said and Hussain frowned.
“Q? kabhi to muhabbat hui ho gi” Hussain elbowed her and she pushed him a little hiding her smile.
“Nops! Mujhe nai kerni koi muhabbat” she said with a frown on her forehead. Saaf nazer aa raha tha jhoot bol rahi hea, balkey mujhe to kuch or he nazer aa raha tha.
“Oye aesey nai kehtey… chalo batao, any one among them” Hussain asked pointing his finger towards the boys in the lawn and Maheen glared at him. “La ker tumharey qadmon mein betha doon ga” he added dramatically and I chuckled
“Ye sab? farangi ki aulaad? Huhn! In mein se kisi mein itna dum nai k Maheen Imran ko handle ker saken” Maheen said boastfully and Hussain looked at her face.
“Acha? Aesa bhi kia hea janab mein?” He asked smirking and Maheen got up on her feet, dusting her dress off letting the grass blades falling down.
“I have a class guys, see you in the room Mahrukh!” She waved at me and walked past us.
“Oye! Jawab to deti jao” Hussain yelled and she giggled turning towards us.
“Why don’t you dig it out yourself, Romeo!?” she yelled back before getting disappeared into the crowd of students and Hussain chuckled shaking his head.
He turned to look at me and found me smiling.
"Arey kaheen tum WO to nai samajh rai ho?" he asked, as his smile gone and I chuckled.
"Naheen" I replied and he chuckled as well.
"I should be going too, class about to start in a few minutes." HUssain said as he got up, I held my bag and was about to get up when he offered me his hand. i looked at his hand and without looking up at his face i lightly held it, with a light but firm pull he pulled me up on my feet.
"Thanks" I smiled.
"Any time, by the way it was nice meeting you" He smiled back and left.
keeping my bag over my shoulder i sighed a little as i stepped towards my class, thinking about Maheen and Hussain.
