Chapter five

P.O.V of Raven.
I woke back up with a pounding headache still around the back of the gala. People probably assumed I'd just passed out. I rolled over, pain lancing my stomach and look to see one of Renegades weapons embedded in my stomach. I pulled it out, holding in a squeal of pain and looked at it, the horrible logo of Slade adorning it but there was something in it. I pried it open and looked inside at the clue that Robin had left me. Instantly I was filled with joy and I heard something else inside smash. I quickly took to the skies and flew back to the tower.

"Guys, guys." I shouted as I got inside, "Get up, this is important."

"It's 2am in the morning Rae." Beast Boy complained as he joined me and the others in the main room, "What's so important it interrupts our beauty sleep?"

"It's about Robin." I said, "I know why he's working with Slade. At least, I have a clue for why he might be."

"He's a traitor Raven." Cyborg said, "Nothing you can say will make us forgive him."

"He tried to kill us Raven." Starfire cut in, "Just look what he did to me. He's moved on."

"No, look." I held out the paper he had left me.

"The threat is inside you." Beast Boy read out, "What's that supposed to mean?"

"I don't know." I said after a moment of hesitation, "But I heard him communicating with Slade, he doesn't want to work for him. Listen." And I played my recording of him talking to Slade.

"Did he just call him master?" Starfire asked, "That is so the cliche."

"I don't think Slade is giving him much a choice." I said, "He was fighting back and then he just apologised, Slade is obviously holding something against him. And whatever it is, it's inside us."

"Rae, we've already checked ourselves for any bugs or stuff of the sort." Cy said, "He's just having us on."

"No, he's not." I argued, "He doesn't want to work for Slade."

"You're starting to sound like Star did." BB complained, "So when you get over this. Tell us." And he left.

"I agree with Beast Boy." Cyborg said and Starfire murmured her agreement as they both also left me alone.

"He isn't playing us on." I muttered as I looked out the window, "And if you won't help him, I will."

P.O.V of Robin.
I arrived back at the hideout to see Slade had already ripped the paintings to pieces. And inside them was a bag of nanoscopic objects.

"More probes." Slade answered my unasked question, "But these ones are not for your friends. No, these are for much more important issues than controlling you."

"What are you planning?" I asked, getting right up in his face.

"You'll know in due time." He replied and dismissed me, "You're still in trouble for using that tone with me earlier. And your punishment is a simple one. To. Your. Room."

I went without question, it was better than another job for him.  I quickly went through my room, looking for cameras and finding a couple, quickly taking them down. Then I went over to the wall and blasted a hole through it. Hopefully, they'd be here soon, with the probes removed.

"What are you doing in there?" Slade's voice came through my comms.

"Punching the wall in frustration and imagining it's your face." I replied and he seemed satisfied with that answer and went back with what he was doing.

I lay down near the hole, I couldn't leave, not until I knew the probes were removed from my friends, and hopefully Star would be down here soon, if Raven delivered my message.

I must have fallen asleep because the next thing I know I can hear movement outside my door and Slade shouting at someone. I quickly got up and headed out of my room to see him fighting with Cheshire.

"Ah, Robin." Cheshire said as she saw me, "Can you stop the madman killing me?"

We both ducked and began to run as Slade came at her again, "What did you do?"

"I must have said something that tipped off Raven last night because her probes are gone." She said and I stopped.

Raven had removed her probes, she was safe from Slade.

"Attack her." Slade ordered me, "Or I destroy your friends."

I didn't bother holding back as I launched myself at Cheshire, and she seemed surprised at my swiftness. She tried to cut me open with some claws that came from nowhere. I danced back, spying Slade standing and watching from above. I leapt over Cheshire and pushed her down, causing her legs to give out from beneath her and she fell to the floor. I came back over to her and kicked around the head, knocking her out.

"Why was that so hard Slade?" I asked jokingly and then caught myself.

I just made a joke with Slade. What was wrong with me?

"I have a different task for you today." Slade said and I looked up, suddenly nervous as he held out a new device, "Put the probes back in Raven or the rest of your friends die."

"What?" I asked, stepping back in surprise.

It was one thing to betray them like I had, but to actually put something in them that could kill them. It was a strict no-go zone.

"You heard me." Slade said, "Put the probes back in Raven or watch your other friends die. So what's your verdict?"

This was such a hard decision. It shouldn't be, let them live with a threat to them or let three of them die and know it was my fault. Why was this so hard? But in the end, there was always only one choice. I took the weapon from him.

"Good choice." He said as I hung my head, "Now get on with it."

P.O.V of Raven
I just had to figure out where Starfire had looked for Robin, where they could have been right next to each other but one unaware of the others presence. But that was going to prove difficult, she said she'd been all over Jump and half of our neighbouring city, which wasn't in any way small.

"Raven where are you?" Cyborg's voice came through my comms.

"Looking for Robin." I replied.

"Well, we found Renegade." He said, "Trouble down at Wayne Enterprises."

"Don't hurt him." I bit back as I changed direction and flew back to Wayne Enterprises.

"He may not give us much a choice Rae." And he cut the link.

It shouldn't take me long to get there, but the team will definitely arrive before me by at least a minute. I just hoped they wouldn't hurt him too much.

P.O.V of Robin.
"Robin, stop it." Beast Boy said, "Rae said you don't want to do this, if you don't want to then you shouldn't."

"Shut up." I screamed as I came at him with my staff and sent him flying into Cyborg.

"If you do not want to do this then why do you do it?" Star asked and I turned to face her, still hating the look of the bandage on her leg.

"I don't have a choice Star." I bit back, "But you do, you can get out of here before something bad happens."

"I have a duty to protect this city from all criminals, and that includes you Renegade." She said and threw some starbolts at me.

Renegade, it was a suitable name for what I had become, a traitor to the city, the Titans and to myself. And it hurt me to think that, but the truth can be painful. That was something I learnt a long time ago. I threw myself at her, tackling her to the ground and restrained her with specially designed cuffs.

"Let me go." She growled as she tried with everything she had to escape.

"I can't do that Star." I said, "I'm sorry."

"I'll show you sorry." Cyborg yelled as he rammed into me.

I flipped back over, throwing special restraints at him as I landed. When I looked back over at him he was immobile on the floor, his circuits cut out. Only Beast Boy left. I heard movement behind me and just as he leapt to take me from behind I ducked into a roll and threw his restraints at him, instantly  transfiguring him back to his usual form and leaving him stuck in it, bound.

"Where's Raven?" I asked Cyborg.

"Like we're going to tell you." He spat back, "You're probably planning on killing her."

"If I wanted any of you dead, you would be." I ground out and threw him to the floor, hard.

"You need to find her Robin." Slade said, "Or those three bite the dust."

"Using song references now are we?" I growled back, "Well I have one for you, You don't own me."

"But I think I do." Slade replied, "But the time for fighting is later, right now, you have a mission."

"Robin." I tensed as I heard Raven's voice, not daring to turn around, "Robin look at me."

I took in a deep breath before turning to face her, and she looked as stunning as she did last night. How had I never noticed her before? Probably the cloak she used to hide herself.

"You need to go Rae." I got out, a lump forming in my throat.

"I'm not leaving without you." She said, "You can come home Robin."

"He doesn't have a home with us anymore." Beast Boy got out.

"Shut up." Raven screamed and the lights from the Y went out, "Robin," She turned back to me, her voice gentle again, "Come home."

"Complete the task Robin." Slade's voice said in my ear, "Or your friends will pay."

I raised the gun towards her and she stopped her advance towards me.

"You don't want to do this Robin." She said, resuming walking towards me, albeit more cautiously now.

"I don't have a choice Raven." I bit back, the tears now falling, "I have to."

"You always have a choice Dick." She said, "Always."

"No, we always have options." I said, "Not a choice. Sometimes one route is just impossible to take."

"Now Robin." Slade shouted.

"Please Robin." She begged and I looked up at her again as tears fell down her face.

"I don't have a choice Rae." I said, "There is what is right and what is wrong. And I have to do the former."

And I turned the gun towards me and shot it.

"Nooo." Slade screamed in my ear as I dropped it and went flying backwards.

"Robin!" Raven shouted and the bulbs for the W went out.

"New deal Slade." I ground out, "If I lose my friends, you lose your apprentice."

"Then so be it." He said and suddenly I was wracked with pain as the probes attacked inside of me.
