Chapter 2
I felt a hand grab mine and then Cameron laced his fingers with mine. I looked over at him to see him smile back at me. It was an "I love you so much" kind of smile. It made me feel like I was on cloud nine and I knew he was really feeling this song by the way his actions mellowed. He didn't say anything but I knew what he was thinking.
We pulled into a parking lot outside a big brick building. Our hands separated as we unbuckled our seatbelts and got out of the truck. He put an arm around my waist as we walked to the venue. I went to grab the door but he held it for me. The inside of the building was so much bigger than it looked from the street. I followed Cameron to the backstage area where we met up with his band mates who had apparently been waiting on us for awhile.
"Dude you're late," said Zach, the lead singer. He was the one Danielle wanted me to date. Sure he was cute but he wasn't my type and I wasn't interested anyway.
"I know. I know. Chill. Traffic sucked and we went to the park for lunch. I'm here now," Cameron replied, clearly annoyed.
"Well let's hop to it," Zach said, leaving the dressing room. I assumed he went to the stage to set up.
Cameron handed me some cords and a guitar case. I waited for him to grab a few himself and then followed him to the stage. We spent about twenty minutes plugging things in, testing volumes and instruments and unloading the equipment from their van outside.
"Babe can you go get my bass from the van?" Cameron asked.
"Sure," I said, running off to head back outside.
I noticed another white van pull up and park a few spaces down from ours. It kinda creeped me out since I was out here alone and there's a creeper van just chillin' there. I collected Cameron's bass and the cord for it's amp and attempted to fetch the keys from my back pocket to lock the van, while juggling everything else.
"You need some help?" I heard a guy ask.
I turned slightly to see a tall boy about my age with short brown hair.
"As many times as I've gone back and forth like this, you'd think I would've learned not to put the keys in my pocket and try to juggle everything," I laughed, trying to be friendly. He looked like a nice guy.
"Here, let me get that," he smiled, taking the instrument case from my hand.
I tossed the cord to my other hand and pulled the keys out of my pocket, shutting the sliding door and locking the van.
"Thank you," I smiled, turning back to him.
I held my hand out for him to hand me back the case.
"No, I'll carry it for you. I'm going in there anyway," he said, nodding toward the venue.
"Oh. Well thank you."
He followed me across the parking lot and held the door open for me. We walked down the long hallway, passed the dressing room, where I noticed one of Cameron's band mates give us a funny look, and we stopped when we got to the stage.
"Where do you want this?" he asked, holding the case.
"Oh just next to the stand over there," I pointed to Cameron's mic stand.
Mystery guy walked across the stage to set the case down and then turned to face me. I felt awkward, since it was just us two standing there and I didn't know what to say.
"Do you need help with anything else?" he asked, taking a few steps toward me.
"No I think that's it. I'm just waiting to see if I can do anything else around here," I said, shifting my weight to my other foot.
"Do you work here?"
"No my boyfriend is the bassist for the headliner tonight. I'm just helping them set up."
"Oh. You're Cameron's girlfriend," he said, as if a light bulb just went on.
"You guys know each other?" I asked.
Before he could answer, Cameron walked onto the stage carrying another mic stand.
"Liv, I see you've met David," Cam smiled, walking across the stage to place the stand in the center for the lead singer.
"Yeah, he helped me carry some stuff back from the van," I replied.
"I should've introduced myself. I'm sorry," David said, holding his hand out to me.
"David Holloway."
"Olivia Winter," I smiled, shaking his hand. "But call me Liv."
"Nice to meet you, Liv."
"Well we have about three hours before show time. We're gonna do a quick sound check and then you guys can have the stage," Cameron said to David.
"Are you in a band?" I asked David, still clueless as to who he was.
"Yeah, I'm the guitarist for the opening act," he answered, smiling like he was really happy about his position, being in a band.
I could read his body language easily and I knew he was a really sweet guy with a passion for music. I liked him already, as a friend of course.
"That's awesome," I replied. "I look forward to seeing y'all perform tonight."
"Thanks," he said, walking across the stage. "I'll see you guys later. I'm gonna take the guys to get food while you guys sound check so they'll shut up."
Cameron and I laughed and David left the auditorium to meet up with his band.
"So, what do you think of David?" Cameron asked, sitting down on the edge of the stage.
"He seems really nice," I answered, walking over to sit down next to him.
We let our legs swing from the side of the stage. Cameron put an arm around me and I leaned my head on his shoulder.
"You know, I really am sorry about what I said a couple nights ago. I was wrong and I didn't mean to hurt you like that," he said with a sad look on his face. "I love you."
"I know. It's okay. I love you too," I mumbled, shaking it off.
Cameron leaned his head down to kiss me. The kiss was slow and sweet. I knew he felt really bad about the things he'd said. I didn't really understand why he was so controversial lately. It seemed like almost every night he would pick a fight with me over nothing. I guess he was just venting. Maybe he was just over worked and stressed. I tried to be the supportive girlfriend and ignore how much we fought but it was getting hard to just shrug it off when it happened so often. Cameron had never physically hurt me and I doubted he ever would but his verbal insults were still pretty harsh. I just hoped it would stop soon.
"Cameron..." I mumbled against his shoulder.
"Yeah baby?"
"Why do we fight so much lately?" I looked up at him.
He let out a heavy sigh and leaned his head on top of mine."I don't know baby. I guess I just have a lot on my mind."
"It hurts, you know?" I said, moving my head off his shoulder.
I leaned my head back to look up at the ceiling. I studied the spot lights hanging above and breathed out, tired. It had been a long day.
"I know. I'm sorry. You know I don't mean it," he said, laying back against the stage floor.
I laid down too."I know but that doesn't make it hurt any less," I replied, still watching the ceiling.
"I have no excuse. I'm a jerk. I know."
"No, you're just stressed," I said, not wanting to agree that he could be a huge jerk sometimes. I didn't want him to know I thought that.
"That's not an excuse," he groaned, rolling to the side and sitting up. "I love you."
"I love you too," I sighed.
"Are we okay?" he looked back at me with a pathetic look on his face. He reminded me of a sad puppy.
"Yeah, I guess," I answered, sitting up.
Cameron stood up and held his hand out for me to help me up."I have to sound check before the guys get pissed at me again. There's food and a TV backstage if you want something to do, or you can watch us practice."
"I think I'm gonna go take a nap. There's a couch back there that's calling my name," I laughed.
"Okay. I'll wake you up before show time."
I walked backstage to get some rest. I was jet lagged and kinda bored since I had nothing to do til show time. I was looking forward to getting to see David's band's set though. I hadn't met any of his band mates yet and that interested me. Mostly, my mind was focused on what would happen after the show tonight when we went back to the hotel. I was really hoping Cameron and I wouldn't have another fight, especially since his band and another band were with us. I didn't want to be embarrassed around them.
I fell asleep to the sound of Cameron's band practicing a couple songs. Something about tonight made me think everything was about to change. I didn't know for better or worse, but I just had this feeling that something was gonna happen tonight. I shook it off but the odd thought lingered in the back of my mind.
I awoke to someone shaking me gently. Opening my eyes I saw Zach kneeling in front of me with his hand on my arm. I groaned and sat up, looking around the room. I was still exhausted and really didn't want to get up.
"Hey," I mumbled, rubbing my eyes.
"Hey," he half smiled. "Cam said to wake you up. Show starts in twenty minutes."
"What time is it?"
I didn't see a clock anywhere in the room. He pulled his phone from his back pocket.
"Almost seven thirty."
"What time do you guys go on?"
"Eight fifteen," he answered, standing up and grabbing a water bottle from the mini fridge next to the couch. He then came back to standing in front of me with an expectant look on his face.
"What?" I asked, confused. I was expecting him to leave.
"Scoot over," Zach said.
I moved to the end of the couch and he plopped down next to me. It felt really awkward since I barely knew him. I'd only met him a few times and half the time I couldn't even remember his name. Plus, by the way he acted around me, I always thought he hated me. He leaned back against the couch, twisting the bottle cap back and forth.
"Talk to me," he said, as if I was supposed to tell him something.
I didn't know why he wanted to talk to me. Usually if I walked in the room he was in, he almost immediately left.
"About what?" I asked, crossing my legs in attempt to move further away from him.
"Anything."
"Um... your hair looks nice today..." I said awkwardly. That's all I could think to say.
He turned his head to look at me and cocked an eyebrow. "Uh thanks..." he said.
I started to get up but he grabbed my hand and nodded for me to sit back down.
"Olivia..." he sighed, sitting up and looking at the floor.
"Yeah?" I asked hesitantly.
"Are you okay?" he asked, turning to face me.
"Yeah. Why?" I replied with a confused frown.
"I'm not stupid," he said, as if he knew some big secret or something.
"I didn't say you were."
"Look, I know we don't really get along but there's obviously something bothering you."
He set his water bottle on the floor and took my hand in his. Okay, if it wasn't awkward before, it's super awkward now.
"Why would you think that?" I asked, glancing down at our hands. His thumb started rubbing circles on my hand.
"There's something going on between you and Cameron and whatever it is is upsetting you. Did something happen?" he asked with a concerned look.
"No..." I mumbled, looking away from him.
"I'm trying to be a friend here. It doesn't help if you won't let me," he said quietly.
I thought about it for a few seconds. I wasn't sure whether to tell him or not. History had shown me telling people outside of your relationship about what goes on in your relationship usually causes drama because you're getting another person involved. I took a chance anyway though since he was being nice.
