Lies
As Rosa strolled into the precinct the next morning, Gina huffed and span around on her chair. Rosa raised her eyebrow - she hadn't even looked up from her phone. Knowing Gina wanted her too... that made it so much harder. The life they could have together- no. She needed to stop torturing herself. That life could never happen. Not when she was being forced to betray her family. She doubted any of her friends would stick around with what she had been told to do.
"Hello," Amy whispered to Rosa.
"Amy," Rosa said seriously, "Tell me-"
"No. Stop." Amy looked around nervously. "Where do you and Gina disappear to?"
"What?!"
"You know, i never see you in our bathroom..."
"Oh," Rosa breathed a sigh of relief. "Right. Come on."
Amy followed Rosa to Babylon and gazed around in disbelief. "Wow. Any other day I'd be outraged you left me out."
"Any other day?"
"Got more on my mind right now," Amy let out a shaky laugh. "Rosa... what did the new captain say to you on the first day?"
Rosa's blood ran cold. "Was just a case Amy."
"It wasn't." Amy looked Rosa deep in the eyes. "That was not a case Diaz. You snapping at me in the breakout room... there's a reason for that."
"I was tired, okay? What did he... what did he say to you?"
Amy scuffed her feet awkwardly. "Just a case," she whispered.
"Fine," Rosa sighed. "I know what you're trying to do. It wasn't a case he gave me, it was something else and i didn't expect it but it's fine and i can't tell you. Now tell me what he said to you."
"Just a case," Amy said again, smiling slightly.
"Amy," Rosa said warningly.
Suddenly Amy burst into tears. "I cant do this any more Rosa," she cried. "I cant... hide it like you can. I felt sick lying to Jake last night..."
Rosa wrapped her arms around her friend. "Why did you need to lie to Jake?" she whispered.
Amy pulled away. "Rosa, I can't tell you."
"What about if i tell you mine after?"
Amy looked at her nervously. "I- okay. You can't tell anybody."
Rosa nodded.
"He- I don't know how to explain it. He just knows..." she trailed off.
"Knows things about you and you're not sure how he found out?"
"Yes, exactly. They're not things I want people to know. Anyway, he told me I have to... um- divorce Jake," she murmured.
Rosa's blood boiled. "Son of a BIT-"
"Rosa! Shut up! If he finds out i've told anybody..."
Rosa shook her head. "He won't. It's okay." As much as she was furious at Rogers for trying to ruin jake's and amy's relationship (and charles' life), she couldn't help but feel jealous. A divorce wasn't quite in the same league as ending one life and ruining eight careers.
"So what did he say to you?"
"He... it was sort of similar," Rosa said slowly. "He knows things about me and i would rather nobody else did. He said I need to... he just said to do whatever he tells me. So i guess corrupt things, i'm not sure yet." She bit the inside of her cheek and tried not to blush. She didn't like outright lying... secrets were different, this was plainly untrue.
"Oh God, that's terrible! Rosa you can't, you'll be thrown in jail!"
If this was her reaction to some corrupt police work, Rosa was glad she hadn't given her murder to tackle. "Yeah I'll figure something out i suppose," she said, more to herself than anybody.
They heard a knock on the door. "Rosa? What are you doing in there-" she opened the unlocked door and stopped suddenly, taking in the sight of Rosa cupping Amy's tear stained face with her lips inches from Amy's forehead.
"Oh," she said softly. "That's why you stopped me. It's Amy, not me."
"What the hell? Gina, i was about to kiss her forehead. She's my friend. You're being ridiculous."
"Right," Gina whispered, tears in her eyes. "I am amazing Rosa. The only reason you would stop me is if there's somebody else."
"Gina. I am married. Stop it."
"Oh righttt, Jake! Forgot about him, did you? I don't know what's going on with you two any more but i wouldn't put it past you Amy. I've just had a meeting with Rogers and... yeah. Wouldn't put it past you."
