Over the Hills Into the Goblin Down [Pt.1]

Last night when I came back, the dwarves were sleeping, and Gandalf was nowhere to be seen.

Worry gnawed at me, but I felt he would be fine. He is a wizard and has powers. I soon curled up on the outskirts of their little camping things, ensuring they were safe. Though I dont think anything can come into these borders unnoticed. Feeling sleep go and take me, I willingly succumbed to it and fell into the dark realms of sleep.

I didnt know how long I slept, but I was woken up by the sound of footfalls scattering about and hushed voices. Stupid dwarves, I thought with a snort; there are other ways not to wake a sleeping dragon. I huffed slowly and opened my eyes to see the Company packing its things. I frowned and lifted my head softly.

Bilbo came upon hearing the shot, so I whispered silently to him, "where are you guys going?" all the dwarves froze and turned slowly toward me. I gave them a raised brow and said, "to be trying to keep silent, you weren't doing a good job. now, why would you want to leave?" Thorin sighed and said, "do you want to follow us or stay here?" I gave him an offended look "of course I want to join. we're friends, companions now! and friends dont abounded each other," the dwarf king nodded curtly and went back to his bedroll to pack it up.

I didnt have anything, so I just waited until the Company was done, and they started to trek out of Rivendell. "will you take the watch from the air?" asked Thorin once I had come up to him. I nodded, and I was in the air in no time, keeping as hidden as I could so no landowners could see me from the ground.

Maybe I should have stayed down to be with them.

We had come to the mountain range that divided Rivendell and us, and somehow, Varda had thought it would be good to win a storm.

A thunderstorm, to be exact. I sighed as the chilly water droplets pelted down on my silver scales, making it hard for me to fly. I thought about descending to the dwarves and maybe helping them if they fell, but that would worsen the wind. And I could hit them off the ledge instead of helping them. So yeah not a good idea. But I was also to them when some called out, "this is no thunderstorm!" I frowned and stilled in the air looking at where the white-haired dwarf was pointing. Out from the sides of the tailoring mountain was something rising. my hearthstone shook, and my stomach churned. It was a giant. Stone giant.

Before I knew it, a bolder was hurtling towards m,e and I barely dodged it. "Skipre!" I heard some yell, and I glanced behind me them. A rumble shook the gourd, and I turned my head to see yet another giant rising. And then the mountain under the dwarves and bilbo started to give away, cracking like an egg.

My eyes widened as it split the Company into two groups, one on the rising giant's left leg and the other on the right. I wanted so badly to swoop in and save those who were closest to harm. But I couldn't. Before I knew it again, a bolder was hurled at the Company's giant. The third giant rises back up again. Then, slowly, the second throws a punch, sending it falling back into its place on the mountain.

I  watch, helpless, as the rest of the Company is seemingly crushed between the stone. My breath gets taken away, and I growl before descending, stopping as close as possible to the mountain face. I see then that the others are alive and well. I sigh in relief but then start to look for our little burglar. Finding him o dangling off the edge of the cliff. I waste no time swooping down, almost swatting the dwarves in the face as my wings beat against the mountainside. I grab bilbo gently in my talons before placing him on the safe ground where the dwarves take him.

"I thought we'd lost our burglar," Dwalin says as he gives me a thankful smile. I give him a curt nod before feeling my body shrink, a gift I got from my father and mother. Mother has powers, and magic, while the father has hunting instincts. Soon I'm small enough to be on the ledge without causing diffcomfort. Hen hears Thorin say something that makes my blood boil, and I get the thought of snapping at him. "He's been lost ever since he left home. He should never have come. He has no place amongst us." the prince glanced at me as if meaning this to me too. I know he hates dragons, my half-kind, but I can't do anything about that. I only returned the glare and ushered bilbo over to me so I could drape a wing over his shoulders "dont listen to Thorin. He is tired. Now let us find shelter," I say and look up to see the following after Thorin leads me, and the halfing does the same. Soon we enter a cave. It is dark, still, and silent. "It looks safe enough," I comment and flare my nares.

"Search to the back; caves in the mountains are seldom unoccupied." Thorin comment to me, and I nod, slinking in and sniffing around. I feel a weird aroma, but that's it. I saw nothing. "There's nothing here," I report back. Finally, Gloin, a dwarf with a fiery red beard and hair in the middle of the ro, drops a bundle of wood on the floor. He grins, rubbing his hands together.

"Right then! Let's get a fire started." he says, but Thorin comes up to him, saying, "No. No fires, not in this place. Get some sleep. We start at first light."

I curl up, and bilbo comes over to me, twiddling his thumbs. I look up and smile at him "what is it, master Baggins?" the poor halfing sighs and asks feebly, "d-do you think I can sleep with you?" I get a bit surprised but nod nonetheless. I open one wing so he can curl up against my warm stomach. The halfing wastes no time and does that, falling asleep almost at once. I smile and nuzzle him gently before scanning the room.

Most of the dwarves have settled to sleep, and I see that throin is about to. He walks over to Balin, who I hear say softly, "We were to wait in the mountains until Gandalf joined us. That was the plan." Thorin looks at his friend before saying, "Plans change." he then turns to Bofur," take the first watch." the dwarf nods grudgingly, and I send him a pitying look but say nothing.

I soon lay my head down and slumber into the sleep realm.
