Chapter 1
I'm Vicky. Where am I from? Well, I live in that poor town that has no food and water over there. That's Eel Town. Worst name ever. My parents were born here, and so was I. My parents were off fighting in this horrible war. It drained my town of food and water. I was sitting in my house. More like survival hut. It was a one room house with a low roof. The walls were bricks and the roof was wood. The floor was dirt. Our old house was destroyed. Since my parents are away, my nanny watches me. She's not a nice nanny either. I walked out of the house easily. All my nanny ever did was sleep on my bed. Yes, MY bed. Frustrating.
Soon, I was walking down the one street that had two open shops, which were both junk stores. No food, no water, not much life. All the rest of the streets only had one shop open. None of them had food or water. People were starving and thirsty. So was I. I hadn't eaten in a day. Yesterday morning at six, my nanny gave me a banana and a cup with one sip of water in it. That's it.
I suddenly heard crying. I looked around, the sun was setting, so it would get very dark. But I kept looking anyway. I walked into an alleyway. There was a little girl, maybe around eight, who was crying. I walked over to her. "Are you okay? Where are your parents?" I asked. She looked up at me.
"I'm hungry and thirsty, and I'm an orphan," she told me sadly. She started crying. "And I ran away from the orphanage because the woman couldn't take care of us," she told me.
"I'm Vicky by the way," I told her.
"Mary," she responded. I looked at her. She had long blonde hair and brown eyes. She was wearing an old purple dress and a locket around her neck. She didn't have any shoes. I then realized we looked alike. I had short blonde hair and brown eyes. I wasn't wearing a dress like her though. I had an old black tank top on with an old baggy brown sweater that was my mom's on over it. I had a blue skirt that my nanny forced me to wear and leggings with about ten holes in them. I also had socks and sneakers.
Anyway, Mary was crying. I sat next to her and she hugged me. I hugged her back. "Do you want to be friends?" she asked.
"Yeah," I said. We sat there in silence for a few minutes. I realized Mary fell asleep. I smiled. Suddenly, it sounded as if the earth was trying to throw us away. It was an earthquake. Mary woke up and she started shaking in fright. Since we were near buildings that could fall, I grabbed Mary's hand and forced her to run out of the alleyway with me. "We're going to my nanny!" I yelled to her over the screams of the people. Mary held my hand like it was her mom's. We ran down the cracking streets.
