Chapter 5 - Risking My Life a Second Time

Connor's POV

Lieutenant and Detective Anderson have arrived at the front of a convenience store. I wasn't given any orders, so I got out of Lieutenant Anderson's car and stood at the door, arms folded in front of me as I fixated on nothing in particular.

"We've got officers sweeping the entire neighborhood, in case anyone saw anything." I heard someone say.

"Alright, well let me know if they turn anything up," I heard Lieutenant talking to the officer.

"What are you gonna do with that?" I reckoned they were talking about me. I wasn't given the order to talk so I didn't say anything. I decided to go over the facts.

There is an AX400 loose in Ravendale district, last spotted on the cameras of the convenience store. I went through the footage again. It walked in with a girl and started talking to the human cashier. They walked around and while no one was looking, hid a pair of pliers in her pocket, and both of them ran out.

Carlos Ortiz's android. An HK400 model had acted irrationally and was driven by "fear". He stabbed Ortiz twenty-eight times before fleeing to the attic, due to the fact he had nowhere to go and was lost. This AX400 seemed to take a different route and drove from 4203 Harrison Street Corktown, Detroit all the way down to Ravendale district. It took about a thirty-minute drive by bus and stayed until the last stop. It was driven by fear as well but in a different way. They are lost due to the fact they have no one to listen to. In conclusion, a mutation occurs in the software of the androids, which can lead them to emulate human emotion. There's nothing that ties these deviants together. But there has to be a link, I'm sure of it.

Puma's POV

"What are you gonna do with that?" a police officer asked, looking at Connor.

"I have no idea..." the three of us looked at Connor, who was standing completely still beside the car, staring straight ahead of him. "But Puma seems to like him." He smirked at me as I rolled my eyes.

"It took the first bus that came along... and stayed until the end of the line." Connor stated, finally speaking up. "Its decision wasn't planned, it was driven by fear."

"Androids don't feel fear," Dad said, confused.

"Deviants do." Connor pointed out. "They get overwhelmed by their emotions to make irrational decisions."

"Ah, well that still doesn't tell us where it went."

"It didn't have a plan, and it had nowhere to go." Connor side-glanced at an abandoned building. "Maybe it didn't go far."

"Ugh, if only it weren't so cold!" I couldn't contain myself any longer. "I'll be at the bus stop."

"No, Lia, you aren't going anywhere. It's your fault you didn't bring a jacket," Dad said to me, pulling me back.

"She can have mine-"

"She appreciates the offer but no," Dad said. I let out a huff.

"Lieutenant, I must insist. It is November sixth, on a rainy day, I would imagine it to be quite cold. Puma's temperature is ninety-four degrees Fahrenheit, 35 degrees Celsius. This states Detective Puma is suffering from first-stage hypothermia, which causes shivering, reduced circulation, and lack of coordination. May I please lend Puma my jacket?"

Dad and I both stared at Connor as he took off his jacket and slipped it onto me.

"I- I don't have hypothermia, that- that's not possible!" I laughed but took Connors' jacket.

"I'm afraid it's possible. It's the lowest stage so it's not life-threatening, and probably the reason why you nor Lieutenant noticed.

"Alright, I don't need you diagnosing my daughter. You are a deviant hunter," Dad said and pulled me toward him.

"I apologize." Connor gave a head bow and headed off.

"Dad, you can't keep getting mad at Connor, he's trying his best." I looked at Dad.

"And you're going to support him after what happened?" he asked in a low voice. My heart fell a little.

"It wasn't the androids fault, it's the-"

"Fine, go head after your android. I'm not taking care of it any longer." Dad put his hands in the air.

I gave a sigh. "Alright. I'm going to go check something, I'll see you in a bit."

I walked toward the abandoned building, sensing there was something off about it. I noticed Connor who was scanning the house.

"There is thirium on the fence over there and an android inside. I'll see what it knows." Connor told me as I approached.

"Alright, let me come with." I sighed as Connor opened the door. There was an android standing in the center of the room, which made it look downright suspicious. He was grey shawl and green pants. His golden-blond hair looked dirty and messed up. He looked very fidgety and nervous as we walked in.

"I'm looking for an AX400. Have you seen it?" Connor walked up in front of the suspicious android. I stayed behind at the door.

"Ralph's seen nobody." the android said with a nervously soft high-pitched male voice. I was surprised. I've never met anyone before that refers to themself in third-person.

"Are there any other androids here?" Connor started looking around the room.

"Other androids? No..! Ralph is alone."

I could see Connor scanning Ralph. He turned to me.

"Model #WR600. Gardener. Serial number 021 753 034. Status: reported missing."

I crept to get a betting look at the android, who seemed more nervous now. I suppressed a gasp as I saw the left side of his face completely destroyed. He had several deep scars and torn off skin that couldn't regenerate. The left side was completely crackled.

"Don't be afraid. I'm not going to hurt you." Connor stated as he began to look around the room, carefully glancing at Ralph occasionally. "There's blue blood on the fence. I know another android was here."

"Ralph scratched himself coming through..." the android said quickly. "That's Ralph's blood."

After a while, Connor walked into the back room and the android softly sighed.

"Are you okay? Is anyone bothering you?"

"Me? No... no... No one's bothering Ralph. He lives alone, how can anyone bother him?"

"Just in case." I shrugged. "If you don't mind me asking, what happened to half of your face?

"Ralph was attacked by a group of human delinquents. They tortured him until Ralph finally fled. Ralph is considered missing, but Ralph doesn't mind."

"Alright. I'm very sorry to hear that."

Ralph tensed up as Connor walked into the living room again. He scanned the table and fireplace. While Connor crouched on the floor underneath the stairs, Ralph whispered.

"You are kind. Ralph is very sorry." He kicked me from behind my leg to make me fall off-balance and pushed me onto the floor on my back. He charged at Connor and grabbed him from under his arms and pulled him back.

"Run! Quick! Kara!" He yelled out.

The missing android and the girl ran out from the stairs and dashed to the door. Connor got pushed against the floor as Ralph ran off. Dad appeared from the door and yelled.

"Connor? Lia? What the hell is going on?"

"It's here! Call it in!" Connor shouted as we both got up and ran after the criminal android and the little girl. I ignored the pain in my left leg and lower back. I could sense Connor running after me, and he overtook me in a couple of seconds due to his android abilities.

I felt my pain go away as the adrenaline overtook my body. I was going at least as fast as Connor, which I thought the last thing I'd be doing right now was chasing the androids with a deviant hunter.

"They're over there!" a cop shouted at us. I took a swift turn to where the cop was pointing to, with Connor behind. The two were getting away and hopping over a chain-link fence. Without a second thought, I charged over the fence after them. Connor pulled me down as he glared into the android's eyes. She had short black hair, unlike in the report. She had human clothing on and lacked an LED.

"Don't go, Detective. I can't let you risk your life for this."

The same cop from a couple of seconds ago ran holding a gun.

"Don't shoot! We need it alive!" Connor yelled at him as the two slid down a muddy hill and started to get across an about ten-lane highway.

"Oh fuck! That's insane!" I heard Dad coming up behind us, out of breath." When they had crossed halfway, Connor started to climb up the fence after them.

"Hey! Where are you goin'?"

"I can't let them get away!" Dad held on to Connor as he desperately tried to get to the other side.

"They won't! They'll never make it to the other side!" Dad said, loosening his grip.

He's wrong. I know what androids are capable of doing, and getting across the road is an easy task for them. I thought as I swiftly jumped over the chain-link fence.

"Lia get back here right now what the fuck do you think you're doing!?" Dad exclaimed.

"I can't take that chance for them to get across!" Connor jumped up to climb as Dad yanked him down. "Do not go after them Connor, that's an order!"

"Connor, goddammit!" by the yell of Dad I could tell Connor jumped across as well. I slid down the hill and ran after the deviants. I quickly jumped over the highway guardrail. I took a deep breath.

"Let's dance..." I ran across the first road, pushing my body out so the car coming didn't hit me. I jumped across the hood of the car and fell flat for the third car to pass by before rolling to the guardrail. After jumping over I ran up to the deviant and the girl. I could hear Connor behind me.

He'll get them. I thought.

The criminals jumped over the guardrail, the woman helping the little girl and they both ran to the next lane. The android pushed the girl in front of her so as to not get hit, and barely made it herself. The girl was sent charging forward and she gave out a yelp. They crossed another lane as Connor and I were reaching close to them. The deviant pushed the girl in front of her and she ran to the other side safely. I had reached the deviant android and started to pin her down. The android elbowed me in a lane as I stumbled back, and I got hit by something as I fell back a yard or so, yet not collapsing to the ground. Connor had caught me and made sure I hadn't been hurt. If it weren't for him, I'd probably be at a very low health rate. I clutched onto him for dear life.

What was I thinking?

My heart rate started to elevate as Connor looked around.

"Shit," he swore as we broke off each other.

***

"Do you have any idea what you have gotten yourself into!?" Dad hissed at me while we were in the car. I was pushed to the back with Connor due to my dad being furious at my act.

"I was only doing my job, you can't yell at me for that! Besides-"

"I don't want your excuses, Lia!" Dad glared at me in the rearview mirror. "They had a very low chance rate of surviving, and you risked your life for an android! You could've died! Just bam. And gone from existence! These androids just need to be captured to figure out why they are acting- well the way they are acting! It's not a suicide mission we're sending you off to!"

I hung my head low as we pulled up to Dad's favorite place: Chicken Feed.

Dad and I walked out of the car, leaving Connor sitting in the car by himself.

"Okay, I understand the android because he will do everything to accomplish his fuckin' mission! But you, Lia?! I didn't expect that from you."

"Dad, I really am sorry, I was only trying to help with the investigation." I looked at the ground.

"Don't scare me like that. Got it?" He looked at me.

"Got it." I nodded, swallowing.

"You need something to eat."

"Unless they have salads here I'm not eating at this place-"

"Woah hey! Be careful!" Dad yelled at the car that almost crushed us.

"You're eatin'. Whether you like it or not. You need food in your system."

"Fine," I said as we walked up to the food truck.

"Hey, hey, hey... Hank!" I looked over to see Pedro standing by the truck, getting a drink. "How you doin' man!"

"¡Ese!" Dad called back and they both hugged while I awkwardly stood there. I smiled as Connor walked up and stood next to me.

"Decided to join us?" I gave out a small laugh.

"I figured it would be a good idea to get to know both of you closer."

"Yeah, I'd love to get to know you better." I playfully bumped my shoulder against his. He summoned an android smile onto his face.

"Aw well isn't it lovely to see you, Puma? Always got a bit of cute on your face right here." Pedro finally noticed me.

I smiled at his flirt attempt. "Hi, Pedro!" I tried to sound bright. I didn't like him that much because he was engaged in illegal gambling, and he wasn't my type, not that I have a type. But at least he isn't as rude as Gavin.

"Anyway, Hank, listen, I got a shit-hot tip for you. Number five in the third. The filly's one hell of a chaser! You wanna flutter?"

"Well, your last shit-hot tip you gave, set me back a week's wages, Pedro."

"Come on, this is different! It's a hundred percent guaranteed you can't go wrong!"

"Yeah... right." Dad said skeptically. "Alright, I'm in."

He handed Pedro the money as I gave a small annoyed sigh.

"Is something wrong?" Connor asked me, noticing my mood.

"No... it's just- ah nevermind. It's fine. Thank you for worrying."

"Always a pleasure." Connor bowed his head as Pedro left.

"Hey! You won't regret this!" Pedro shouted as he walked away. "And a good day to you beautiful!" He waved at me as he left.

Right in from of my dad? You've got some serious balls, my man. I rolled my eyes as I waved back at him.

Dad turned to see Connor. "What is your problem? Don't you ever do as you're told? Look, you don't have to follow us around like a poodle!"

"What's wrong with poodles?" I turned to Dad. He flicked his hand at me and shook his head.

"I'm sorry for my behavior back at the police station," Connor apologized. "I didn't mean to be unpleasant."

"Oh wow, you even got a brown-nosing apology program!" Dad chuckled and shook his head again. "Guys at CyberLife thought of everything, huh?"

Gary turned and gave us our food. "Thanks, Gary," I said with a smile as I took a hot dog I had ordered.

"Don't leave that thing here!" Gary said, pointing to Connor. I sighed.

"Huh, not a chance! Follows us everywhere."

"This... Pedro," Connor began as we settled down to eat. "He was proposing illegal gambling. Am I right?"

"Yeah," Dad responded.

"And you made a bet?"

"Yeah." Dad shrugged his shoulders.

I gave out a sigh and looked away.

"Eat your food, Lia."

"You seem to be... irritated by Lieutenant Anderson's actions. Am I correct?"

"A bit, yeah. Cops gambling. What's this world coming to." I shook my head and took a sip of my lemonade.

"Do you eat here often?"

"Only him. Unless he drags me here." I pointed to my dad.

"Your meal contains 1.4 times the recommended daily intake of calories and twice the cholesterol level," Connor stated. "You shouldn't eat that."

Dad took a bigger bite of his burger. "Everyone's gonna die of something." I placed my food down.

"Eat." Dad turned to me. "Or I'll force-feed it to you."

"Don't embarrass me like that." I pretended to flush and took a bite of my hot dog. "I guess this stuff is good."

"What do you mean you guess?"

"Is there anything you'd like to know about me?"

"Hell no! Well, yeah, um, why do they make you look so goofy and give you that weird voice?"

I choked on my hot dog. Was he serious?

"CyberLife androids are designed to work harmoniously with humans. Both my appearance and voice were specifically designed to facilitate my integration."

"They got everything spot on."

"Well, they fucked up." Dad and I said our compliments at the same time.

The boys looked at me in surprise, waiting for my explanation.

"The CyberLife team tasked with him must have spent months and years designing Connor." was all I could come up with. I turned to Connor. "You were designed splendidly. If you didn't have that LED you'd look like a normal human.

Everyone was quiet for a couple of peaceful seconds. I got done with my hot dog and drink and went to throw it out.

"Maybe I should tell you what we know about deviants," Connor suggested.

"You read my mind. Proceed." Dad waved his hand.

"We believe that a mutation occurs in the software of some Androids, which leads to them emulating human emotion-"

"In English, please."

"He means they don't feel emotions. They sorta get overwhelmed which causes them to act irrationally. Which leads to them lashing out. Since androids can think, therefore they can feel. The human mind generates emotions from the brain and sends them down to generate the appropriate emotion. The brain of an android functions the same way humans' do because we created them. Androids should theoretically receive the same signals, therefore making them feel emotion. Is that English enough?"

Dad and Connor looked at me again. Connor was first to snap out.

"Correct."

"And how the hell do you know so much about androids?"

"It's fun to learn every now and then when you have absolutely nothing to do," I explained.

"I guess the moral of the story is that emotions always screw everything up. I guess androids aren't as different from us as we thought." Dad shrugged.

"Maybe... Maybe..." I muttered to myself. "Say, Connor,"

The android turned to me.

"Have you ever dealt with deviants before?"

A lost expression soared over Connors' chocolate eyes. "Two months back... a deviant was threatening to just off the roof with a little girl. I managed to save her."

I nodded. "PL5 or 6 hundred. I can't remember. My mind palace is too cramped to hold in all the information."

Connor looked at me questioningly as Dad sighed.

"She claims to have a photographic memory. Likely story."

"Near photographic memory, Dad." I glared. "The last time you told someone that you were over at a dinner with a friend chewing on a chicken wing while laughing your ass off at 10:34, Tuesday, June 26th."

"Okay okay, we get it." He turned to Connor. "She can sometimes remember things piece by piece, detail by detail, and other times she doesn't even know the definition of the word "forthwith" or something." He turned to me. "You happy?"

"It was a PL600." Connor finally answered. "The deviant was destroyed."

"So I guess you've done all your homework, right? Know all there is to know about us?"

"I know you graduated top of your class, made a name for yourselves in several cases and became the youngest Lieutenant in Detroit." He looked away at the table for a bit before looking back at Dad. "You have also received several disciplinary warnings in recent years and you spend a lot of time in bars." Connor turned to me. "You have become the youngest female officer to become a detective, also graduating top of your class. You're one of the few humans that support androids, and you love spending time with your pets, hence the dog and cat fur on your clothing every day. You didn't have many friends growing up, which would express the sympathy you have gained toward androids."

"Yep, I would say that about right. Anything else?" I asked.

"No. Is there anything else I should know?"

I shook my head.

"So what's your conclusion?" Dad drew Connor away from me since I was becoming tearful again over Cole.

I miss you. You don't know how much I miss you, my little brat.

"I think... working with officers that have personal issues is an added challenge. Especially when your personalities conflict with each other." He turned to me. "But adapting to human unpredictability is one of my features." he gave me a playful wink, and I felt my face getting hot as I covered it with Connor's jacket, which I still had on.

Hank's POV

I can't believe it. This son of a bitch is just flirting with my daughter. In front of me. I've had enough of Lia trying to get me to forget what happened, but I'm not buying it. Does she seem to have taken a liking to this fucking piece of plastic? I bet neither of them realizes what's happening. Jesus, I can't take this lovey-dovey shit from an android who is flirting with my daughter. Fuckin' androids. And his lost puppy look isn't helping either, she's seeming to get attached to him. She already took a bullet at the start and almost got run over by a bus. And she's not even taking her life seriously after what happened to her brother. My son.

Lia lifted an eyebrow effortlessly, something she loves doing, and I turned to see Connor's LED blinky-forehead shit started spinning yellow. He started blinking rapidly as if he were having a seizure.

"I got a report of a suspected deviant. It's a few blocks away. We should go have a look. I'll let you finish your meal, Lieutenant. I'll be in the car if you need me."

"Bye Dad, I'll kill time in the car," Lia said and gave me a small wave before following Connor.

"Lia!" I snapped as she tried to cross the road. She turned around, her long brown hair glistening a golden color in the sun. "Remember our compromise. I'm getting you a taxi and sending you straight home."

Her expression weighed down as I said that.

"Don't give me that sad look. You promised. You almost got hit by a bus, and I'm not taking any more shit from you today than I have to. Go home, Lia."

"But Dad! There's just a report of a suspected deviant! It's probably nothing! After that, I'm going straight home." She walked back over to me.

"No, stop bullshitting me. That's what you said this morning, 'next time I get hurt I'm heading home immediately.' Guess what? You're fuckin' hurt and you don't want to go home!"

"As I said, it's probably nothing! And if it isn't I'll stay out of the action and let Connor capture the deviant. If it is one anyway."

I sighed as she went to sit in the car with Connor the plastic detective. Fucking androids. You're screwing with my life and now you're messing up Lia's. Fucking androids.

A/N: Such a cute chapter as Lia fell into Connor's arms *fangirling noises*. Under the conditions of getting run over by a bus of course, but still.

It's a Lolbit Show
