Part 1 (original short story)
"She's right."
"How can you be so sure?"
"I can tell."
"How? I can't see it."
"That's cause you're not paying attention."
"I've been paying attention for two hours now."
"No, you've been talking to me."
"I'm gonna leave."
"Wait! Do you trust me?"
"What does that have to do with anything?"
"Believe me, she's right." Detective Terrence stared into her eyes, pleading and begging her to stay and hear him out.
After some silence, Emily answered, "Fine. But I don't think this has anything to do with the disappearances." Terrence sighed and sat her down, spreading out his evidence.
"That woman that came in yesterday was obviously crazy."
"You think? She was shouting and screaming nonsense!"
"No, not quite nonsense. The first thing she said was 'It's here!' Thats when police officers at the station began to try and calm her down but she continued screaming."
"Terrence-"
"Wait! She wasn't just screaming. She was warning us. Don't you see? Here's video footage of what she was saying while the police took her away."
The footage showed an old woman, dirty and wearing torn up clothes, screaming at the police officers. It was mostly inaudible, but there were a few phrases that were loud and clear.
"The man at the warehouse! He's a monster! A killer!" After fighting more with the officers, she screamed, "He has my daughter!"
Emily sighed. "You can't go off of what an insane woman says. How do we even know she isn't hallucinating?"
"There's only one way to find out." Terrence smiled at her, a twinkle in his eye. A spark and yearn for adventure.
"Terrence-"
"Do you trust me?" Terrence squeezed her hand.
"Yes." Terrence laughed and pulled her out of the chair. In less than a minute they were driving off to the warehouse.
"What if there's nothing inside, Terrence? Then this would all be a waste."
"I know there's something going on in there. There has to be. If there isn't-" Terrence stopped talking as a dark and worried emotion covered his face.
"Is there something you're not telling me?" Emily said, hushed.
"If I don't figure out this mystery, I'll," Terrence sighed. "I'll lose my job."
Emily saw the fear in his eyes; but she also saw confidence, beyond any man's imagination.
"We'll figure it out. You're the greatest detective I know." She put her hand on his forearm and rubbed it, calming him down.
In about 10 minutes they arrived at the warehouse. Terrence and Emily exited the car and looked up at the large, looming doors.
"I guess the first step is walking in right?" Terrence was about to push open the doors when Emily interrupted.
"What if it's not safe? What if someone is actually in there?"
"I'll protect you." Terrence pushed open the doors. A mildewy smell invaded their nostrils. Slowly and quietly, Emily followed him through the first floor of the warehouse. It was almost completely empty except for some machinery off to the right.
"Welp, I guess there's nothing here. We should leave now," Emily said, wanting to get out of the creepy warehouse. But Terrence held her hand.
"Come on. There's two more floors to see." Emily swallowed her fear and continued following him.
They walked up the first flight of stairs quietly, ready to see the second floor.
"Oh my gosh." Terrence whispered. Emily let out a small scream, but Terrence covered her mouth. Seventeen children littered the floor, all of them dead.
"All the kids," Emily whispered, trying to hold back sobs of sadness, fear, and shock. "They've been murdered." Emily covered her mouth, not able to tear her eyes away from the gruesome sight.
"We found them. What happened to them?" Terrence whispered.
"More like who did this to them?" They decided to walk up to the third floor.
Nothing could ever prepare them for what awaited them there.
