I ran down the stairs frantically, helping my pregnant mother keep up with me. Luckily we were prepared for this. They made us do drills in school for tornadoes. I could hear the wind pounding against our front door, threatening to burst open at any moment.

"Where's dad?" I asked as we reached the basement.

"He called and said he couldn't make it home in this kind of weather. But he told us not to worry because he found shelter and should be safe," my mom said as she rubbed her belly.

"Are you alright?" I asked her.

"Yes, fine thank you," she said taking deep breaths. "Now will you please shut that door Meredith?"

Nodding, I walked toward the basement door and shut it. The storm clouds had settled over our city about a month ago, but there was no storm. The meteorologist had claimed that this was the biggest super cell that they had ever seen. They were surprised that a storm this large had still not burst. Our city had made national headlines, unfortunately the worst was yet to come. We went on with our lives as if everything was normal, but we knew something bad was going to happen, and now, it has.

My mother and I sat there in the basement, trying to stay calm. I could feel my heart pounding against my chest, so hard as if it would pop out any minute. The adrenaline was too much to handle.

We sat there and waited for it all to be over. After a half hour passed I started to relax a little. Maybe it's over I thought, that's when we heard the door crash.

"What was that?" I asked nervously, all too aware of what was happening.

"It has begun" she answered calmly.
