Chapter 3: Unidentified Flying Object
Eric turned around to see what had followed us.
"What is that?" he asked. I turned around to look and caught a glimpse of a big, furry beast with beaming red eyes.
"It's a....." I said shocked.
"Bear," mom said finishing my sentence. I was astonished. I thought there were no more animals left on the planet, but I guess I was wrong.
"What do we do?", I asked terrified. It was just standing there, staring at us. The bear, wasn't acting like a bear.
"Run," she replied calmly. I nodded and slowly grabbed Eric's hand.
"Where?" I asked.
"Any house," she replied. So we ran into the first house we saw, never looking back. As we sat down trying to catch our breath a man walked towards us with a knife in one hand.
"Who are you and why are you in my house?" he asked as he approached us slowly.
"We're not robbers!" I blurted out remembering what had happened to our house.
"Why are you here?" he asked again.
"There was a bear," mom told him. He didn't seem convinced.
"Henry, put that knife down,"a woman told him as she walked towards us. "Can't you see they're harmless?" Henry slowly put the kitchen knife down, unsure weather to trust us.
"Sorry to intrude," my mom told them. "We've had a rough couple of days," then she told them everything that had happened to us.
"Wow," the woman said after my mom finished the story. "You could stay with us if you'd like," she offered.
"Thank you, I appreciate that! My name's Carroll by the way," mom said as she shook the woman's hand.
"I'm Joanna," she replied. "And this is my husband, Henry, and we have a daughter, one minute let me call her," Joanna said. The daughter was about 12 and her name was Liesal. "You kids have fun and play in the living room," Joanna told us. Me and Eric followed Liesal to the living room.
"So what's your name?" she asked us as we sat down.
"My name's Meredith," I replied. "And this is Eric," I said as Eric smiled and waved.
"So I heard you saw the bear," she said.
"Yeah, but it was weird because it didn't really act like a bear," I replied.
"Of course it didn't act like one!" she laughed but soon stopped when she saw my puzzled expression. "You don't know?" she asked.
"Don't know what?" I asked very confused.
"The aliens," she replied as she pointed to the ceiling.
"Um.. What?" I asked wondering if she was joking.
"About a month after the storms we saw aliens," she said seriously.
"You're kidding, right?" I asked smiling.
"Let me explain," Liesal said. "Everyone who had survived in this area after the storms either stayed here or left. Of course my mom, dad, older sister and I decided to stay, but soon we realized what a terrible mistake that was."
"Wait, you have an older sister?" I interrupted.
"Let me finish," she told me. "We did our best to make this house feel like home and managed to find some food and water bottles. Everything seemed to be going fine until they came. The sky had suddenly turned dark and none of us knew why. Maybe the storms had started again we thought. But soon the clouds disappeared and the sky returned to it's normal color. We went outside to check if everything was fine when out of nowhere something that looked like a saucer landed in front of our house. It was just like the movies. We were obviously terrified so everyone ran inside. I was only 5 then, I had no idea what was happening. I just stood there, dumbfounded by the saucer and its opening door . My older sister ran back outside to grab me just as a man walked out of the saucer. 'Calm down,' he told her. 'I'm not going to hurt her.' He held out a lollipop for me, and I broke free from my sister's grasp and ran towards him. She yelled at me to come back but it was no use. As I got closer the man's face seemed to be flickering, his face went from a man to a monster's. I slowed down, my sister finally caught up to me and pulled me away from the creature. My parent's had come out by this time running towards us. Then the creature pulled something out of his jacket, it was long and looked a little like a stick. He pointed it towards me but my sister was faster and pushed me out of the way, and before I knew it she disappeared. Vanished into thin air, the creature then sped into the saucer and flew away," she paused for a minute before finishing. "They had taken her away, and it was my fault! We didn't know what to do." Liesal then started to cry.
"It wasn't your fault!" I assured her. "You were only 5 and didn't know what to,".
"Anyway, we think that the bear is controlled by the aliens to watch us," she said through her tears.
"I'm sorry to hear about your sister," I told her even though I knew it wouldn't help. She just nodded in reply.
"What did the UFO look like?" Eric asked scared.
"Just like the movies, it was silver and big," she told him. "But don't worry, they won't be visiting anytime soon," she reassured Eric after seeing his terrified expression. "I hope " she whispered under her breath so he couldn't hear.
"I've always wondered why New York still has electricity, could it be related to the aliens?" I asked.
"Well we're not sure, but probably," she replied.
"And are they also the ones restocking the stores food shelves?" I asked.
"Yes that would make sense wouldn't it?" Henry replied as he entered the living room with Joanna and my mom.
"I guess so," I replied. I looked over to Eric and saw that he still had a frightened look. "Are you okay?" I asked him worried.
"I'm fine," he said unconvincingly.
"Come on Eric, what's the matter?" mom asked. He looked at her nervously.
"What if they come back?" he asked.
"Don't you worry, they will not be coming back," Henry assured Eric.
"I hope," Liesal whispered under her breath once again.
That's exactly what we need, I thought. Hope.
