Chapter 10: Code
"What would you like to order Mr. Hide?" the waiter asked me.
I looked up from the menu, "I'll have a coffee please," I told the boy. He nodded and wrote down the order hurriedly. He walked away quite quickly. I looked out the window next to my booth, it was almost 7 pm, but the sky was still bright as day. The windows were all closed and the air conditioners were turned up fully. It was Monday evening, about a week after the spotting of a supercell in Philadelphia. I had kept the newspaper and brought it with me to the cafe. 'Philadelphia's Supercell' it read in big letters. Supercell. That was the last word uttered to me by my father.
It was the year 1998, the day was September 15th and I believe it was around 8:50 p.m.I was upstairs in my bedroom when I heard screaming coming from downstairs. I remember creeping down the stair, in order to remain undetected
"Gary are you insane?! How many times do I have to tell you? There are absolutely no aliens! There are no UFOs! " mom had yelled.
Dad's glasses rested on top of his head and some papers were in his hand. "Samantha, don't you get it? If this was just one spotting I would have let it go! But this has been happening every day for two weeks! I've seen them! Look, I even have proof!" dad shuffled through his stack until finally a photo dropped out. He picked it up hurriedly and showed it to mom. "Look do you see that? It's a UFO! And those two are aliens!".
Mom laughed, "Gary, I'm not sure if you've gone crazy but those are humans!".
Dad looked at the photo again, "These are aliens! Their disguised as humans so no one will suspect them! But if you see them in person you can see their real faces! Hold on I think I have a picture of it! Let me go get the photo!".
"Gary don't bother! "This isn't real! Okay? I know you need a story for your newspaper but this in unacceptable. You'll find a story, a real one! Just get rid of this please!" mom pleaded.
Dad shook his head, "No this is real Sam! You've got to believe me! Look, in this picture this alien is handing a coded message to the other one! It took me a while but I finally figured it out! All these numbers represent a letter in the alphabet. For example, 28-A, 9-B, 57-C and so on! Do you want to know what the message said Samantha?".
Mom placed a hand on her forehead and shook her head. " No I just want you to let it go!".
"It all..." dad began.
"STOP!" mom yelled. "Stop it okay? This isn't real! This only exists up here," she had said pointing to her head. Mom had then grabbed the papers that were in dad's hands and furiously ripped them. "None of this is real! None of it!" Dad's eyes rested on the pieces of paper that littered the floor. Slowly his face became red.
"It's real alright! They're probably here today too! I'm going out to find them!" dad yelled as he headed for the front door.
I remember rushing down the stairs as I called out to my father "Dad! Where are you going? Don't leave!"
Dad turned around and mom stared at me in shock. "Franklin what are you doing here?" mom had asked. "Did you hear everything?"
I nodded and turned to my father, "Dad don't go!".
Dad laughed as he crouched down to my height, "Don't worry son, I'll be back soon. But before I return lets see if you can decode that paper on my desk, okay? I'll give you a clue, the code has something to do with a supercell,". Dad then got up and headed out the door, that was the last time I saw him.
"Sir? Sir are you okay?" the waiter who had taken my order asked, snapping me out of my trance.
I looked up, "Um...yes I'm fine thanks," I answered. The boy looked unconvinced but gave me my coffee anyway. I reached for the ceramic cup and took a sip, which resulted in the burning of my tongue. Reaching for a napkin I wiped my mouth. Then I grabbed some crumpled papers from my pocket and placed on the white table cloth. These consisted the 'code' my father had talked about. I had only kept these papers as a memory of my father but never had I opened them. I'd always assumed that they were fake, my mother had told me so and the fact that my father was a major sci fi fan didn't help. I looked at the crumpled papers, could these hold the key to everything? Or are they just fake codes written by my father? I reached for the first paper and opened it up, large numbers filled the page. Should I?
"Frank!" a man named Jayce said as he walked towards me. I stood up and we both shook hands. "Long time no see!".
I laughed, "Yes how long has it been? 6 weeks?".
He chuckled, "10 actually! So where have you been for so long? Trying to avoid seeing your old, and only friend?" he teased as he took a seat across from me.
"Now, why would I want to do that?!" I asked.
Jayce smiled, "So how's the store doing?".
I shook my head, "Not well, I had thought that a candy store would draw a lot of business but with all this heat I don't think people have the time to even go grocery shopping!". Jayce nodded in agreement, his cafe wasn't doing any better. I was the only one there excluding the employees and him, and oh yes! Dressed in a suit and tie was a man, sitting a couple of booths down. His head was resting on one hand and he looked stressed.
"Yes, this is too much humidity! I would have never expected this year to turn out so damn hot! My employees are only going to work today and they have the rest of the month off! I can't force anyone to work in these conditions! My AC has been blasting for the last week and a half and still it's hot! I don't know how I'm going to keep this store open," Jayce said as he wiped a layer of sweat off his forehead. I nodded, my mind still pre-occupied with the thought of my dad's code. Jayce seemed to notice this so he asked, "Frank, are you alright? You seem to be under more stress than me!"
I looked at him, unsure weather to share my thoughts. Would he think I was crazy? " It's...nothing really,". Jayce looked at me still expecting an answer, I sighed, "Fine I am stressed, it's just about something my crazy father told me when I was young,".
"You mean the one that ran away and never returned?" Jayce asked. I nodded. "Well, what did he tell you?"
"He told me he saw aliens! He said that there was a code that was passed between two aliens!" I admitted. "And.....".
Jayce moved closer to the table, "And what?"
I gulped before finishing the sentence, "He said the code had something to do with a supercell,". Hearing this Jayce practically fell over the table with wide eyes. From the distance I saw the man dressed in formal clothing staring at me. He must have overheard the whole conversation because he got out of his seat and started walking towards me. "Jayce let's talk about this somewhere else," I said motioning to the other man. He nodded and led me towards his office. "So what do you think?" I asked.
Jayce eyes were still wide, "Are you crazy Frank? Is this some kind of joke or prank? You can't just go around saying things like that! Remember the man on the news who claimed to have seen aliens! What was his name, Oz?!"
"Jeremy Oz," I answered Jayce. Jeremy Oz was a man who told the whole world about 'aliens'. He disappeared five days later.
"Do you want to end up like him?! Seriously Frank you've got to think before saying these things!" Jayce yelled.
"I knew you would think I was insane! But I think it's real! And I'm going to solve this damn code!" I yelled.
Jayce sighed, "Maybe you are crazy Franklin, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to solve the code. Maybe then you would realize that it isn't real.". I ignored the last comment and we began to decode the paper, although it wasn't long it took about forty minutes to finally finish, in the end our paper read:
Day and Night, we watch them from far,
We watch from a distant star.
Our homes were burnt, our families torn,
They watched and laughed as we mourned.
They struck when least expected
And soon enough they detected
That we were doomed .
That watched as we fell,
And now we can get our vengeance.
It all starts with one big Supercell.
