Chapter 22
The stoned building stood elegantly with a wide see through glass as a door.
The lilac and white letters hung high up at the top of the building. Short hedges of lilies were grown in front of it leaving a flowery scent in the atmosphere.
The little sign turned to the open side hung effortlessly on the show glass part of the bakery. The aroma of baked pastries and cakes rushed passed the doors as delivery guys and employees of the small bakery bustled in and out.
"That scent." A wide smile formed on Samirah's face.
She had her head leaned on her husband's shoulder as they approached the sensitive automated doors.
"You remember," Yusuf squeezed Samirah's hand. "The large bouquet I got you."
A small laugh escaped Samirah.
"The cute ones you secretly picked out from their hedges." The name 'Petal Pasteries' wasn't just made the name.
It sure held all things flowery.
From the newly painted purple and pink stripped wall to the white wallpaper print stuck only to the wall behind the reception.
Cute tables accompanied by two chairs each and clear glass vase of sunflowers set at the center of each table. A couple of special seats booth sat at the right corner of the room. They walked in and moved to the set of booths in the corner.
Once Yusuf and Samirah were settled in their seats, a waitress casually dressed with a white and pink flower patterned apron around her waist approached them.
"We'll go for the specials," Yusuf didn't give Samirah an opportunity to speak. "That's fine right?" His head turned towards his wife's face.
Samirah nodded her head slowly as she placed her menu back on the table with a small smile on her face.
"The specials." Yusuf repeated holding his wife's gaze.
Samirah shyly smiled.
"My poor eyes." She muttered as she raised her eyes to meet Yusuf's.
"They're the most beautiful ones I've ever seen," his smile widened. "Just the perfect shade." He added.
"Brown isn't some special colour." Samirah shrugged.
"Well, it's my favourite." Yusuf shrugged.
As they waited patiently for their order, Samirah updated Yusuf on her days at work.
From the daily dramas at the firm to the murder case they had just finished solving since four months ago.
"She was afraid he was going to find out, so she just took him out of the picture by getting rid of him." She concluded.
"What a despicable-"
"Yusuf..." The squeaky sound of sneakers against the marble floor followed the baritone voice that spoke from behind Samirah.
A tall and thin muscular silhouette clothed in an obviously soft 100% white cotton tee-shirt with a casual matching joggers walked to their table as Yusuf waved at him.
His dark hair was blown and styled simply.
"How have you been?" Yusuf got up to give the guy a handshake alongside a side hug.
"Alhamdullilah, I've been great Akhi." His reply came.
Yusuf offered his friend a seat beside him.
Samirah's features was replaced with a different expression as Yusuf introduced them to each other.
She wanted them to enjoy their time alone!
Not with a third wheel!
"I should get -" Yusuf's voice interjected.
"You just got here, you can't leave just now." Yusuf spoke firmly.
Samirah sipped from her glass of water intermittently and moved uneasily in her seat.
She rubbed her hand over her arm before finally rising to her feet.
"Excuse me." A very thin smile was on her face as she left the table and moved towards the arrow direction to the restroom.
"Man what are you doing?! Are you crazy?!" Adam's voice came out as a whispered yell.
"What?"
"Bruh!" Adam pointed towards the path Samirah was walking on few seconds back. "She's really pretty and seems nice! Bruh she doesn't deserve this." His finger was still pointed at the position.
Yusuf let out a loud sigh and leaned back into his chair before running his hand through the locks of his wavy hair.
"I suggest you quit this before things get messy," Adam paused waiting for the waitress to drop the orders before proceeding.
Once the table was set, the waitress left.
"You know well how I warned you, I told you from the very start." Adam's eyes were fixated on his friend who seemed to take what he was saying with a grain of salt.
He had gotten involved immediately, in any possible he could when he found out Yusuf was seeing someone else behind his wife's back.
This was what friends were for, right?
Adam knew Yusuf was married with kids but he just had never seen Samirah before.
He had met the twins a couple of times when Yusuf brought them along to work few years back when he spent less hours at the office.
Yusuf's muscle feathered in his jaw as he moved his back from the chair and leaned forward.
He drew in a steadying breath before snapping his head in Adam's direction.
"How about this," His muscles tensed. "You just mind your own business!" Yusuf spat his venomous words at Adam who was only trying to help.
Adam shrugged and sank into the seat.
"I was most definitely expecting that reaction," he let out a sad laugh. "It's just a harmless advice and it's up to you to take it or not, I'm just saying stop before she-"
"The food's here." Samirah retracted her steps back to the booth.
"I really should get going now," Adam got on his feet and served them a warm smile. "It was nice meeting you, Samirah."
He had noticed how her expression changed when Yusuf insisted he stayed back. Other than that, even though he wasn't married, he knew it was a sign of courtsey to not interrupt the vibe between a husband and wife.
An unexpected brightness took over her face as she took her seat.
"Same here Adam." Her smile was genuine.
"Okay, catch you around then bruh." Adam nodded towards Yusuf's direction.
Yusuf nodded in return without uttering any word.
"Did he really just come in here and go out without getting anything?" Samirah chuckled as Adam's figure dissolved into the crowd on the streets.
"I think we should eat now before the food gets cold." Yusuf reached for his glass of water with a thin smile which Samirah returned keenly.
