Chapter 55 - Coma
Masaru was standing in front of the 1-F height alliance when they got back from school. He was looking rather nervous, on edge. It was weird, seeing as he didn't interact much with their class on a regular basis. Not like Mitsuki did, at least. But he was here because she was searching elsewhere. They'd spread out immediately after Nezu told them what happened with Katsuki.
Apparently he hadn't used his own keycard on anything after leaving ground gamma and the teachers were searching around campus while he and Mitsuki were asking around.
"Ah, Majutsu, uhm, I was wondering if you've seen Katsuki?" Masaru asked as soon as he saw the girl.
"No, isn't he at home? He wasn't in class this afternoon" Majutsu frowned, not liking this. Something was definitely up...
"Oh, uh, we know, but something happened and uh, well, he ran off and we're trying to find him so if you see him, please let a teacher know, okay?" Masaru asked, trying his best to put up a friendly smile. Yet his worry was still visible.
"Yes, of course" Majutsu nodded. Something bad definitely happened this afternoon... She waved Masaru goodbye before going inside.
"So what was that all about?" Daietto asked.
"Apparently Bakugou ran off after some shit happened so they're looking for him" Majutsu sighed.
"Damn" he muttered.
"Yeah... Well, it's unlikely he'll come here, right? His room is basically empty since he moved to the faculty housing facility" Majutsu said, thinking out loud. Maybe 1-A's dormitory then? It could be... But there was no way his parents weren't already checking that out themselves.
"It's worth checking, you know, to be sure?" Daietto shrugged.
"Besides, I think he still has the plan for his bot laying around there and I really wanna know how he circuited those lasers"
"You just want an excuse to peak at his design, don't you?" Majutsu asked, raising a brow, a small smile tugging on her lips.
"What? We're just his worried friends checking every possible location and if my eyes just so happen to fall upon his designs by accident-" Daietto started, making Majutsu roll her eyes.
"Alright, alright, but I'm actually worried, just so you know"
"Yeah right, like you don't wanna see his plans" Daietto chuckled, following Majutsu into the elevator.
"Okay, maybe a little bit" she smiled.
"But you're not allowed to copy his designs, okay? That's cheating"
"I'd never! Who do you think I am?" Daietto gasped, acting all overdramatic. He liked to joke around, never taking anyone or anything super serious. There were exceptions to that rule though. When it came to food, for example. Majutsu wouldn't be able to be friends with a guy like that if it wasn't for the fact he was super good at electronics. And his jokes were a little funny sometimes, so it wasn't all bad.
"His door shouldn't be locked, right?" Daietto asked as they stepped out the elevator.
"No, they took the personal security off when he moved so everyone here should be able to enter" Majutsu said as they walked up to Bakugou's old dorm room. They weren't expecting to find anyone inside, thinking it would simply be a desk and an empty closet, maybe a bed frame or something but certainly nothing more.
So imagine their surprise when they found Katsuki laying on the floor, passed out, his arms covered in burns. It was an awful, cruel sight and Majutsu couldn't suppress a scream when seeing all the injuries and the blood. Daietto was the first one to act, quickly walking up to Katsuki and checking for a pulse. He was hesitant to check at first though, seeing as his arms, wrists and neck were... Yeah...
"He's still breathing" Daietto sighed in relief, turning around to face Majutsu.
"Go and get Recovery Girl! I'll call Maijima sensei!"
Majutsu blinked, nodding and turning around. She'd never seen Daietto so serious before... Well, this wasn't exactly a situation to be joking around. She rushed past her classmates, some asking why she'd screamed, what was happening.
She didn't have time for questions! And so she ran out the door, panting and wheezing by the time she reached the main school building. God... She needed to work out more... But who had time for that? Not the support course, that's for sure! She shook her head, cursing her poor physique, yet pushing through. Bakugou needed her, he needed Recovery Girl! Majutsu slammed the door open without knocking, breathing heavily as Recovery Girl stared at her.
"What's wrong dear?"
"It... It's... Ba...Baku...gou" Majutsu huffed. Man, she should really start going with Bakugou on his morning runs!
"Bakugou?"
Majutsu glanced aside, seeing Iida sitting on one of the beds. He came by after school to make sure he didn't sustain any lasting damage from the match against 1-B earlier that day. He pushed himself pretty hard, even with the new upgraded engine.
"He's...hurt... It's bad" Majutsu breathed.
"Really bad... Burns a-and blood a-and I-I just-"
"Where?" Recovery Girl asked, already taking her emergency medkit. Iida was on his feet in an instant, ready to help in any way he possibly could.
"1-F height alliance, his old room" Majutsu said, finally able to talk normally again, yet still breathing heavily.
"Iida, sweetie-" Recovery Girl started, but the blue haired student had already scooped her up in his arms.
"Please hang on tight, Recovery Girl!" he exclaimed, speeding out the door. Majutsu took a deep breath, closing her eyes for a moment. Time to rush back to the dormitory...
While she was jogging back, she saw Midoriya come out of the 1-A height alliance.
"Hey Majutsu! Do you know what's going on? I just saw Iida run past here with Recovery Girl on his back and-" he asked as he ran up to her. Majutsu slowed her pace, turning around to face him.
"Bakugou is hurt!" she simply yelled before continuing her way. Izuku's eyes widened, quickly catching up to her.
"Where is he?"
"Our dormitory-" Majutsu started, coughing when Izuku sped up, leaving her to bite his dust. Ugh, hero course students don't consider others at all! Izuku didn't care about her right now though, how harsh that may sound. Kacchan was hurt and it was bad. Why else would Iida be carrying Recovery Girl over campus? There was chaos in the 1-F height alliance when Izuku arrived. People talking and yelling and restlessly moving around, nobody even acknowledging his presence. That was up until he saw Iida.
"Iida! Where is Kacchan?! How is he?! What happened?!"
"Midoriya, calm down!" Iida urged, not questioning how the green head got here or how he knew Bakugou was injured. Word travelled fast on campus so it wasn't a surprise Izuku had heard about Katsuki's circumstances.
"Recovery Girl is tending to his injuries as we speak and his homeroom teacher is on the way! Everything will be alright!"
"Right... Right! I just... Can I see him? Is it bad?" Izuku asked, still worried.
"I think it's best to let Recovery Girl alone so she can focus!" Iida stated. It was then that Power Loader rushed in, running past them up the stairs. Izuku could see the robot helpers roll up in front of the dormitory carrying a stretcher. They normally only tended to hero course students, getting them from the training fields and transporting them to Recovery Girl. If these guys had to come in, it meant things were serious...
"Move out of the way!"
Izuku's head snapped in the direction of the elevator doors opened, revealing Recovery Girl and a boy who was carrying Katsuki. Izuku immediately saw the bandages around his arms, blood already soaking through them. There were bandages around his neck too and the way he was being carried made him look even more fragile. Izuku hadn't realised he'd started crying until tears clouded his vision.
Iida needed to hold him back as Daietto placed Katsuki on the stretcher and the robots carried him out. The support course students stared in horror, some turning away at the sight, gagging, tearing up. People outside the hero course never really saw trauma like this, but unfortunately class 1-A had already seen their fair share of damage and bloodshed...
"W-what happened..?" Izuku choked out. He didn't understand it... Why would Kacchan do something like that?! Did finding out about his quirk really bother him this much..? Was it so bad that he had to fall back on methods like these..? Izuku bit his lip, trying to suppress a sob. He knew what it felt like... To have everyone look at you like that... He should've predicted this... He should've known what would happen! He should've known what was going on!
He should've known...because he lived this life before... Because he knows how grounding pain can be when getting beaten up on a daily basis... People always thought he didn't fight back because he was weak or didn't want to hurt others. That he was targeted because he was quirkless. But in reality he knew which buttons to push in order to get a beating. He knew what riled his bullies up the most.
And that was exactly what was so problematic about it. If he wanted to get hurt, he could do so easily without having to do it himself. That was a step he was always too cowardly to take. Part of him is grateful for that now though, now that he didn't depend on it anymore. But he knew that Kacchan hadn't healed yet, that he was still in that wicked and fucked up headspace he found himself in years ago. So he should've known! He could've predicted this! He just... He didn't want it to be true...
"I think it's best if we return to our dorm now. There is nothing left for us to do here" Iida said, trying to stay calm and rational. It's not like he didn't care about Bakugou or about what happened, but he knew that getting overemotional right now wouldn't help the situation. It was out of their hands, really. All they could do was trust in Recovery Girl's skill and hope things would get better soon. But judging by the injuries he had witnessed, that might be too much to ask for...

Izuku's face visibly paled when he saw Katsuki laying on one of the beds in the nurse's office the next day. He hadn't been able to focus on school or training, not after the state he saw his boyfriend in the previous day. So when auntie Mitsuki told him Recovery Girl was allowing visitors, he rushed here immediately.
He wasn't prepared for this though... Seeing Kacchan unconscious on the bed, bandages covering his neck and arms. He was connected to a fluid bag so he wouldn't dehydrate due to the severe burns all over his body. He was in a rough shape and apparently hadn't woken up since he was brought in.
"We're keeping him in a coma for now" Recovery Girl explained.
"I have everything I need to treat him here so there was no need to move him to a hospital. His injuries were quite severe though..."
Izuku nodded, letting the information sink in. Guess now that he had his quirk back, medicine wasn't really a problem.
"So...scars?" he asked quietly, carefully stepping up to Kacchan's bed.
"Most definitely" Recovery Girl nodded, making Izuku sigh. Seems like Katsuki's perfect skin is really going to get ruined over this... He glanced down at his own hand for a moment, frowning. It would be a permanent reminder of this moment, something he'd have to carry with him for the rest of his life...
Izuku sighed, allowing his eyes to trail over Katsuki's features. His face looked so serene right now... But he knew that if it wasn't for painkillers, his body wouldn't be this numb. He was completely paralysed. It made him appear even more fragile, certainly with the combination of bandages and the monitors around him. Izuku was glad he didn't have to be brought over to a hospital though. This way he could come and visit him whenever he wanted. Not like Kacchan would actually know the difference...
"How long are you keeping him like this?" Izuku asked as he sat down next to the bed.
"Depends on how fast he'll heal" Recovery Girl answered.
"All we can do for now is wait"
He sighed, again. Izuku hated waiting more than anything. But he'll bear it for Kacchan. Anything for Kacchan...
He glanced up when he heard the door to the nurse's office open, seeing Majutsu walk in.
"Oh, uh, sorry, I didn't want to interrupt you-" she said, already turning around. Midoriya would probably want to be alone with his boyfriend in these circumstances.
"No, no, it's okay" Izuku quickly said, forcing a smile.
"I... I could use some company"
Majutsu nodded, giving him a small smile in return as she pulled up another chair, sitting down next to the green head. It was quiet for a while after that, neither really knowing what to say or feeling like starting a conversation. Recovery Girl could see the awkward and tense scene from her desk, where she was filling out some paperwork. She slowly shook her head, but didn't meddle. Students and their stunted social etiquette, it really was something else.
And so the sound of pen scraping against paper and the peeping of the monitor were the only sounds that could be heard for some time.
"So uhm... You came to visit your boyfriend huh? Guess that shouldn't surprise me" Majutsu started, not wanting the silence to drag on any longer than it already did. Izuku just nodded, taking a few seconds to say something in return.
"You're a good friend, you know? I know Kacchan appreciates you, even if he doesn't say it" Izuku mumbled, fumbling with his hands in his lap. Majutsu smiled a little at that, absentmindedly swinging a leg back and forth, the chair just a little too high for her feet to fully touch the ground.
"He loves you" Majutsu breathed, looking at the sleeping teen.
"I don't know whether or not he has said it out loud to you, but he loves you... When he told me he had his quirk back-"
"He told you?" Izuku interrupted, turning towards her in an instant. Katsuki had told her and not him? Ouch, okay... That hurt. A lot
"Oh, I thought Shinsou told you? About Bakugou losing control?" she questioned, taken aback by his surprised reaction. Shinsou had told him, right..?
"Oh" Izuku mouthed.
"He didn't mention you were there..."
"Typical... He doesn't strike me as the sharing type so I'm not surprised" Majutsu muttered.
"Anyway, yes, I was there. I, uhm, I guess I was the reason he lost control?"
Izuku raised a brow, silently asking her to elaborate. Majutsu sighed and stopped swinging her leg, her face turning serious.
"I confronted him about his strange behavior. You know, he was distancing himself again like back with that All For One mess and I was sick of his bullshit" she said, frowning a bit as she remembered her own frustration.
"He started panicking and freaked out and before I knew it, those little firecrackers sparked up from his palms, causing him to flip even more and well it escalated rather quickly from there"
She sighed, looking away for a moment.
"I tried using my quirk on him, but it didn't work because he wasn't fully conscious... Oh, uh, my quirk is Demonic Possession. Simply put, I can take over someone's mind, sorta? I can't use it when people are asleep though, so that's that" she shrugged.
"But he wasn't stopping and it was only getting worse so I pulled him along in the forest and put his hands in the pond over by ground sigma, you know which one I mean, right? That's where Shinsou ran in on us and helped me calm Bakugou down"
"He... He got a panic attack" Izuku concluded. Again. Izuku hoped Katsuki would've gotten a little better by now... Well, being kidnapped for the second time probably messed up his progress.
"We brought him to Recovery Girl because he burnt his arms when we tried to calm him down" Majutsu continued.
"After she healed him up, we brought him back home but his parents weren't around. Don't know why, but I wasn't about to leave him all alone after what just happened, you know?"
Izuku nodded, happy to know Majutsu was such a caring person. She was sweet and kind, unlike her pale and little scary appearance. Like a spooky girl from a horror movie or something, but with the personality of a sparkly rainbow, if that made sense?
"He ranted to me about his life for a long time. Sleep deprived Bakugou has no filter, let me tell you that" she chuckled. Izuku smiled at the mental image. Kacchan mumbling nonsense as he was trying not to fall asleep... Looking as peaceful as he was looking right now, except his eyes would be cracked open just a little bit. It would be absolutely adorable! Izuku could feel himself blush at the thought.
"Sounds like he trusts you a lot then" Izuku smiled.
"I'm glad Kacchan at least shared this with someone. He must be stressing out over all of this if he..."
Izuku didn't continue, but Majutsu got the message, both of them simultaneously looking at the unconscious blonde boy.
"He cried and told me how much he loves you... How scared he was to talk to you about this, about you seeing him use his quirk" Majutsu whispered, still seeing Bakugou crying on the couch as he confided in her.
"W-what?" Izuku breathed. Kacchan...cried? He was scared? What the hell did his father do to him?!
"Yeah, uhm, apparently he bullied you when you were younger?" Majutsu asked, frowning a little.
"He was pretty vague about it though... Said that you wouldn't like him anymore if he got his quirk back? He told me you were scared of his explosions and you would realize what kind of monster he truly is if you saw him use it again. That it would remind you of your past together and that everything would be for nothing. Like I said, he was pretty vague. Also really tired"
Izuku was speechless, the shock pushing all air out of his lungs, making him unable to utter out a word. Flashbacks washed over him as he tried to pin-point where that fear came from. Of course he remembered middle school... He could still replay some of those memories as if they happened only an hour ago, even now. Certainly the swan dive incident, as he called it. But they'd talked about that.
Izuku had forgiven him and Katsuki had been so visibly relieved that he doubted the ash blonde didn't believe him. Kacchan was trying to be a better person. He was growing and changing and he wasn't like he used to before. He realised what he did was wrong and he'll never even think about doing something remotely close to bullying someone ever again. Katsuki knew Izuku forgave him, so why did he think he was scared of his quirk..?
Did he really think that once he saw the explosions, he'd cower away in fear like back in middle school? Izuku wasn't the same either. He'd also grown and gotten stronger. He wasn't anyone's punching bag anymore and Katsuki should know that. And yet... Yet he was scared to hurt him... Scared Izuku would hate him for it, that he'd stop loving him if he saw him making explosions again... But where did that fear come from..?
They'd never talked about something like that and most people didn't refer to the strong-quirk-Katsuki now that the ash blonde was quirkless. His personality couldn't be compared- Izuku's eyes widened. His personality was different now. Completely different from before. All due to the influence of his quirk...
Was Kacchan scared that now that he's gotten his quirk back, he'll revert to his old self? Was he scared Izuku wouldn't like him anymore or was he scared he'd start hurting him again? And how did All For One fit into this picture? Was he the one who talked Kacchan into this? That made him believe this bullshit? It must be...
"Good afternoon Recovery Girl, I came to see if you've listed the things that need to be re-supplied. Nezu wants to order it together with the new training equipment so he can do everything at once-"
Izuku's head turned in a second when hearing his mom's voice, his thoughts instantly interrupted.
Inko wasn't wearing anything unusual, a fluffy pink sweater and some plain blue jeans, but the pass that was pinned on her chest immediately caught his attention. He couldn't see what was written on it, but he definitely recognized the UA format. It had the same colours and layout as most faculty keycards, only Nezu and Recovery Girl had different colours as far as Izuku knew. Students had different colours too but they all had the same layout.
It's so you'd recognize what kind of keycard it was if you saw it from a distance, even though your name and function were written on top in big bold letters. In case of students, the function was replaced with the class they were in. It was a pretty efficient system that made sure people were able to keep track of their own keycard and it made it easier to return when lost.
The only question Izuku had was why his mom had such a keycard... Didn't she have one for visitors with clearance of the faculty housing facility, 1-A height alliance and the main school building? That definitely wasn't a visitor's pass. Besides, what was she doing here anyway? What did she just ask Recovery Girl? Something about supplies?
"Oh, Izuku, I didn't know you'd be here too!" Inko smiled, her happy attitude faltering a little when she saw Katsuki.
"Mom..? What are you doing here?" Izuku asked confused as Recovery Girl handed her a stack of papers.
"Right! I, uh, I wanted to tell you sooner but I didn't think it was the right time after Katsuki got hurt so badly..." she sighed, holding the papers to her chest.
"All Might talked to Nezu for me and he allowed a job interview! He hired me as an assistant, nothing fancy or anything! Just helping out with small and boring tasks and making coffee and tea, that kind of stuff. But it means I can work and earn money while remaining on campus and that alone is worth it, don't you think?"
"That's... That's great mom" Izuku smiled, knowing how much she wanted a job in order to provide for her family.
"Yagi-san insists on paying for your schooling for now though. Just to give us some time to build up savings" she explained as he got up to hug her.
"You don't have to rush mom. I don't want you doing something you hate and neither does All Might" Izuku pointed out.
"I know, I know, I don't hate it, I promise! It's just nice to have something to do again" she smiled, pulling back from the hug.
"I have to go and deliver these to Nezu. Don't stay here all day, okay? He'd want you to take proper care of yourself"
Izuku glanced back at Katsuki and nodded.
"Yeah, I will, don't worry mom"
She gave him one last smile before giving him a quick kiss on his forehead, giving Majutsu a polite wave before bidding Recovery Girl goodbye and leaving the nurse's office.
