forty-three.
June March stalked up the front yard of Tannyhill, her breath heaving and her eyes wild and crazed. The gun in her hand was warm from hold long she had been gripping it, but the entire way over here she hadn't managed to convince herself not to do what she was about to do. In fact, she was terribly certain this was the right way to go, her head spinning as she approached the front door.
She didn't bother knocking, reaching for the handle and trying to open the door. She wasn't sure why she was surprised when it was locked, but she was. She sucked in a deep breath, attempting to try problem solving but ultimately lifting the gun. She didn't even wait to consider how stupid this was, the girl pulling the trigger and shooting the lock off. She pushed the door open, starting towards the stairs almost immediately.
She got to the top of them, her face red and her breaths heavy as she started towards Rafes room. However the door opened and he ran out into the hallway, meeting her face to face. She held the gun up at him, the boy putting his hands up, his eyes widening when he realized who was standing in front of him. He couldn't see her all that great, the darkness of the hallway preventing him from getting the full view.
"Woah woah! What is this?" Rafe asked, confusion on his face as he looked at her. She stood seething, her hands on the gun as she tried to gather the words to speak to him.
"You have it!" His face softened in realization and he let out a sigh, shaking his head and pinching the bridge of his nose.
"Put the gun down June. What are you doing?" She looked at him with fire in her eyes, the weight of failure making her shoulders heavy. It was the realization that they had lost that had driven her over the edge, everything that had happened in the past few days seeming to blow a hole through her chest. She swallowed and pushed the emotions deep down, biting her bottom lip to draw her mind from the internal pain.
The light illuminated the scene, Rafes eyes instantly widening as he took in the state she was in. Her eye was already starting to bruise, and she still had a little bit of blood around her mouth, her lip split open. The instant he processed what she looked like he neglected the fact that she had a gun on him, the boy starting forwards with nothing but concern.
"Who did this to you?" He approached her but she reiterated the fact that she was holding him at gun point, his walk faltering and stopping but his eyes not moving from the state of her face. He looked more worried than angry now, not caring that she was trying to threaten his life anymore.
"Back up." Her eyes dropped over him, he was dressed in only a pair of sweatpants, the boy not seeming to have grabbed a shirt in his hurry to see what was happening. She could see his tense breaths making his chest rise and fall and for a moment she hesitated, not sure what she was doing. But then the anger returned and she swallowed her reluctance, shaking her head as he made a move again to try and get to her. His urge to touch her, to check her wounds and just have her skin under his fingertips was so overwhelming that he would take the chance of getting shot. He moved forwards again, trusting that she wouldn't pull the trigger. Her stance faltered as he grabbed her by the chin, a agonizing look in his eyes as he turned her head. She didn't know why it felt different in his hands, but she kept repeating the words in her head like a mantra. He had the cross. She closed her eyes, the pain in her eyelid pulling her back to reality from the trance of whatever this facade of being around him was. She lifted the gun from her side, pressing it against his bare stomach and looking him in the eyes. The cold metal pulled his eyes from her busted lip to her hardened gaze, and he gave her a look that convinced her to speak. "I trusted you."
"We made a deal. I didn't promise you the cross. You know that. We went through that."
"I don't care, Rafe. Because it was supposed to be mine! It doesn't belong to you and it's supposed to be mine!" He looked at her in shock for just a moment before he realized the kind of conversation they were going to have, the boy momentarily pushing away his feelings or at least attempting to, his mind going to the fact that she had a gun pressed to his stomach. He ran his tongue over his top row of teeth, letting out an exasperated sigh.
"Put the gun down and we can talk about this." He would never offer this option to someone in this position, but it wasn't an option to hurt her, so he wanted to try his hardest to proceed without having to. He hoped she would just agree but knew he was out of luck when he saw the look of determination in her eyes, the lost expression in them. She was blinded by rage. She did not back down, the girl lifting her chin slightly before she used her free hand to push his shoulder back, Rafe following her lead and stepping back. He searched her face for some kind of glimpse into her head but he realized she was not in the right state of mind, and so he had to take matters into his own hands.
He sprung into action before she could fully comprehend, his sudden movement startling her. He reached for her wrist, pushing her towards the wall behind them. Her back hit it and he held her against it, his jaw clenched as he pressed her wrist against the wall beside her head.
"Drop it." She grit her teeth, a whimper falling from her lips as yet another failure seemed to strike her. Still she would fight it till she couldn't any longer. The Rafe staring down at her was the one that terrified her, his eyes steely and unseeing as he pulled her wrist back and slammed it into the wall again, a gasp leaving her lips as the gun clattered to the floor. Her eyes followed it as it fell but he didn't even look away from her, his breaths heavy as he tried to contain his anger. "I mean what—what did you think was going to happen huh? You were gonna come in here and hold me at gunpoint and I'd just give it up? Maybe if you would've asked nicely ...maybe I could've considered it."
"Bullshit. You take whatever you want with no regard to how it affects others. You say you care about me but you don't! You don't care!" He sneered as she said it, both of them taking the opportunity to breathe now that the physical fighting was on hold. Their chests collided as they breathed and she hated the fact that his bare skin was burning her.
"I don't care?! I don't care!" He shook his head, his face red with anger as he looked at her in pure disbelief. Before she could think of a course of action he pulled her from the wall, the girl slipping out of his grip and diving for the gun. However he was fast, pulling her back and against his body. He wrapped his arm around her neck, his hand clasping on her shoulder as he kept his arm from obstructing her airway. He walked backwards towards his bedroom, away from the hallway and the gun, the boy throwing her onto the bed and reaching for his bedside drawer while she tried to scramble out of the bed. Before he could grab his own gun she jumped on him, pushing as hard as she could and sending him to the floor. His gun clattered to the floor as she climbed on top of him, her knee on his hand, making him yell out as she used her other hand to hold his other arms down. She grabbed the other gun that he had dropped, holding it up to him. They were at a standstill now, June straddling Rafe and crushing his hand with her knee, his eyes wide as he put together what exactly was happening. He had been bested by her. She sucked in ragged breaths as she realized she had won, relief flooding her body as she looked down at him.
"Where is it?" She said, her ponytail almost out now that she had been jerked around all night. In the silence she felt that fatigue again, her arms and chest and legs and face aching and ailing her. She tried to calm down but was left a shaking, tired mess as she looked down at him. He was almost scared of the look in her eyes, the one people only got when they had nothing to lose. He managed to rip his hand out from under her knee, defeat on his face as she looked down at him.
"It's gone." Her face twisted into one of sincere confusion and she sneered at him, her chest rising and falling dramatically as she waited for him to explain further.
"Where is it then?"
"I..." He didn't want to say it, knowing that she wouldn't be too happy with what he had done with it. "I melted it down."
All of the anger and rage in her face disappeared, her face softening as she felt her heart plummet. She blinked a few times in disbelief, her stomach twisting into a knot as she tried to process what he had said. Rafe Cameron had melted down a priceless piece of history, Popes family's history....for the gold.
She stumbled back, pulling her body off of his, her mouth dropping open as she put distance between them. She didn't know if she wanted to scream or cry or yell or shoot him or break something or run, she really had ultimately failed. They had no chance at getting the cross back. It was gone.
"You didn't." She was still in utter and complete shock, not able to comprehend that the cross was gone. Rafe ran a hand over his head, breathing out and slowly getting up from the floor. She didn't even hold the gun up as he walked towards his closet, pulling a case out of it and walking back over to her. He offered her his hand, June feeling pure and genuine heartache as she stared up at him. This was Rafe.
She took his hand, the boy guiding her towards the bed and sitting her in the edge of it. He handed her the case, June looking down at it and then back up at him, the boy gesturing for her to open it. She prayed that when she opened it that it wasn't what she knew it would be. That he was playing some cruel prank on her and he hadn't actually done something so terrible.
Her fingers shook as she looked back down at the case, flipping the clasps on it and slowly opening it. Her lips parted as she laid her eyes on two large chunks of gold, the reality of the situation forcing her to slam the lid shut. When she looked up at Rafe he had his hand at his mouth, watching her carefully as she struggled for words to say. She felt tears pool on her eyes as she looked up at him, realizing how much of a monster he really was. Her eyes trailed down his body but he mind was racing a thousand miles an hour. Where one problem had disappeared another own replaced it, and she thought this was truly the final push she needed to truly break.
She choked on a sob, Rafe not expecting this reaction at all. The tears flew from her eyes and wet her cheeks, and she instantly struggled to breathe, her chest feeling like she had been shot. Everything came flooding out of her, all of those emotions she had choked down and hid. The cross, the failure, how she had betrayed her friends for something that didn't even matter, Leon Hardy , Kiara, her love for JJ and how he had broke her soul when he had told her he didn't love her, her emotionless state, the stress and weight of everything that had happened in the past few months all for nothing because they never ended up winning, and finally the love she had for the monster in front of her. She was broken, and the realization of that made her heart burn and erupt with hatred.
Rafe took a step towards her, his hands outstretching to comfort her. The second his fingertips brushed across her cheek she lifted the gun, shaking her head and standing up.
"No. No you don't get to win this time!"
"What are you going to do about it? It's already done June!" He shouted back, shaking his head as he tried to keep calm. He didn't know why she couldn't understand that it was over. He had won.
"I'm gonna kill you, and then I win! And I'll finally be rid of you." A look of pure terror flashed across his face as he realized how serious she was, how much she really meant it.
"You won't." She swallowed, pulling the trigger and shooting right past him.
"Jesus Christ!" He yelled, his heartbeat fast and terrified as he looked back at her with wide eyes. "Okay okay! Wait wait wait!"
"No I don't want to." She put her finger on the trigger, gasping for breath as she worked up the courage to kill him. All she could see was every bad thing he had done, everything he had done to her and every way he had ruined her life.
"I'll split it! I'll split it okay?! Jesus we can share it! Anything! Anything for you, okay?"
