Chapter 19 - A Way Out
Picking himself off of the glass covered floor, Gabriel groaned. Not only did his knees hurt but he could feel stinging cuts all over his body where the glass shards cut him. But he had managed to get away. Standing up, he carefully dusted himself. As he did so, the middle aged man looked around at the viewing room he had just broken into.
A piece of paper caught the corner of Gabriel's eye. Intrigued, he picked it up. "Game Station Test Subject Assessment Form," he read aloud. Questions immediately popped into his brain. Test subject? Assessment form? What did that mean? He continued to read the paper. The test subject in question was someone named Makayla Hyssop and, for some bizarre reason, there was an assigned toy line. In this case, Makayla was assigned to Candy Cat. Below was some kind of test score for each of the three games along with a note. By the looks of it, she was horrible at the games. But Gabriel was more concerned about why there was a human test subject. Why was Makayla being tested? And why was she assigned to a toy?
"Are you dead yet player- hello?" Mommy's voice called out from the game room. Gabriel's blood froze. He needed to leave. He didn't have the full train code but it wouldn't hurt to try guessing, right? Spotting a hole in the floor, he jumped down and started running.
"Come on out player! The game is over, you've won!" Mommy continued to cry out. Running through a dilapidated hallway, Gabriel listened as the giant spider-like toy kept calling, "Come to the Game Station and Mommy will give you the rest of the train code. Pinkie promise!"
"Yeah, fat chance," Gabriel grumbled under his breath. He had now reached a part of the hallway where the floor opened up into a chasm. Not a problem though when you had a Grabpack. The middle aged man easily swung across the canyon. He almost lost his grip though when Mommy suddenly shouted, "Mommy knows the game was hard! But that is no excuse to run off and hide! Come to me NOW! Pretty please." Gabriel shuddered. He hated how her voice was alternating between a sweet child's and an angry adult. It was horrifying hearing the manipulation and rage in each tone. He didn't want to even think what would happen if he bumped into the toy. This further fueled his desire to get out. He ran as Mommy screamed, "How DARE you disobey me! I will find you, I WILL FIND YOU!" There was a maniacal laugh before she added, "Where are you? WHERE ARE YOU?!"
"Okay, yeah sure. I'll come to you Miss Crazy, Jesus Christ," Gabriel murmured. He was completely terrified now. He desired to keep on running but he didn't know what part of the factory he was in now. Plus, he was tired from all of this running. Slowing down to a walk, he pushed open a door that he had arrived at. Inside appeared to be the water treatment center of the factory.
Heading up to the control panel, Gabriel began turning the catwalks that stretched over the pool of water. He had just finished putting them in the order he needed when he realized he needed to scan a toy if he wanted to leave. Facepalming, the man groaned. It wasn't like he was running for his life or anything. Fixing the catwalks, he went over to the adjacent room. Little Bunzo Bunny toys, still in their boxes, ran along a complex conveyor belt system. But Gabriel only needed one for the scan. Firing his Grabpack hand, he plucked one right off the conveyor belt.
"Hmm, too easy," Gabriel hummed to himself. He turned to leave when he stopped in his tracks. Something caught his eye. On the railing were a bunch of little red dots. Blood, without a doubt it was blood. But there was something else that disturbed Gabriel. There was a tuft of blue fur. Could it be Huggy's? Following the blood spatters, the man saw that they went towards a vent. As if it weren't obvious enough, there was a bloody handprint on the wall near the vent. Not wanting to think about what this could possibly mean for his future, Gabriel turned and left.
"I need to get out of here, I need to get out of here," Gabriel repeated to himself. Returning to the control panel, he began the process of resetting the catwalks in the order he had done first. Watching them click into place, he went to leave. But thanks to his ever distracted mind, he stopped. Another piece of paper. Picking it up, he began to read it.
"Transfer request. Experiment 1222, Mommy Long Legs. Subject... Marie Payne..." Gabriel read aloud. His voice faltered near the end. He knew that name. His coworker Claire Harper, a counselor from the orphanage, often spoke it with longing. Marie had been one of the many orphans placed under her care. One day, she was taken away, presumably adopted at last. But if Gabriel remembered correctly, Claire always theorized something else had happened to her.
And now he knew just what happened.
"She's just a child... they're all just children..." Gabriel rasped, the truth dawning upon him. Mommy, Huggy, all of the toys. They were all children, and they were all experimented on. That explains the blood and the guts and the behavior. They were all just children! Choking back tears, the man continued to read the transfer request. Apparently, the newly made Mommy Long Legs was extremely hostile towards staff but was motherly towards the other experiments. This led to the decision to have her become the face of the Game Station. That way, she could be a mother figure to all of the orphans who came and went while reducing the chances of her acting out towards staff.
Feeling sick to his stomach, Gabriel set down the paper and walked slowly across the catwalks stretching across the pool of water. Scanning the Bunzo Bunny toy he had collected, he entered the next room when the door opened. His mind was spinning. Huggy was possibly still alive. Mommy and the other toys were children who were experimented on. The Game Station was created with the sole purpose of testing the orphans, seeing if they were eligible to be tested on. Each kid had an assigned toy. And the worst part? All of those sweet innocent children probably all thought that everything was a game. Wiping his eyes, Gabriel turned down a corner.
And immediately got jumpscared by Mommy.
