CHAPTER SIXTEEN

"In an attempt to fix him, she broke herself."

Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah are in a standoff while all three are trapped in the cemetery. Klaus has the indestructible white oak stake, while Elijah is holding Papa Tunde's blade.

"Rebekah!" Klaus yelled in indescribable rage.

"Walk away," Elijah told his brother.

"Don't move!" Klaus yelled.

"Leave us now," Elijah told his scared sister, not taking his eyes off of his brother.

"I can't. I'm stuck here," Rebekah said, she was scared. "Elijah, he has the white oak stake." She was shaking.

Klaus pointed the stake in her direction. "I brought it for you, sister," He said as he took a few steps towards her.

"Get out of his sight. Your presence here only serves to anger him. Leave him to me now," Elijah told his sister and then turned to Klaus. Rebekah vamp-sped away. Klaus goes to speed towards her but Elijah blocked him. "I'm asking you, brother to brother--we end this nonsense now."

"You would side with that traitor," Klaus said angrily, pointing to where Rebekah ran off to.

"I am not choosing sides, but I will not allow you to hurt our sister," Elijah said in a dangerously calm voice.

"We cannot leave this cemetery, Elijah. How long do you think you can defend her?" Klaus vamp-sped away, but Elijah easily caught up with him and blocked him.

On the other side of the cemetery, Rebekah is on the phone with Marcel, updating him on what has happened.

"As long as it takes, by whatever means necessary," Elijah stated, glaring at his brother.

"Do whatever it takes. Just stay alive. I promise you, I'll get you out of there," Marcel told the woman he cared for through the phone, worry seeping through his words.

"I've never seen him like this before. He's out of his mind with rage, up all night howling one obscenity-laced tirade after the next. He's gonna kill me," Rebekah told Marcel in a shaky voice.

"Alright, stay as far away from him as you can."

"That's a brilliant strategy. But, given that that dead bitch Celeste has trapped us in here 'til moonrise, my options are somewhat limited," Rebekah informed the man she cared for. She was scared shitless.

"I'm not leaving you in there. Davina will find a loophole, get you out early, then we can all go together. If Klaus comes after us, we will take him on one hell of a ride," Marcel said in a firm voice, he was worried for the original vampire.

"I lived for centuries looking over my shoulder, ready to run at a moment's notice. Am I to go back to that?"

"Worry about that later. Right now, just buy me some time. I promise you, I'll get you out of there." Marcel then hung up.

Back to Elijah and Klaus. "You've been at this for hours. To what end? Niklaus, I know you, and I grew up fighting you. I can't be beaten, nor can I be persuaded. You cannot get past me," Elijah told his brother as Rebekah used her hearing to listen in to their conversation.

"I could get past you. Although, it might have to be over your dead body. You did stab me with that blade, forcing me to endure hours of unspeakable pain. Perhaps I should direct my rage toward you." Klaus pointed the stake at him.

"You should see yourself-- the murderous expression, the self-righteous posturing. You look like father," He told his brother, disgust on his face. Klaus opened his mouth in shock and then got angry.

"I'm not him." He was upset and angry now. "Rebekah's betrayal justifies my anger. His was that of a madman." He was raising his voice. "You were never the recipient of his cruelty. None of you were-- not Kol, not Finn, None of you!" He yelled and then paused to look at his brother. "I think you've forgotten what he was truly like."

"No. I have not forgotten."

FLASHBACK-- ~900 AD Mystic Falls -

Young Elijah and Klaus are in the forest, where Elijah is helping Klaus learn how to shoot a bow and arrow. Klaus takes his aim at a deer.

"Be still. Deep breath. Hold...NOW!" Klaus shoot the arrow, but missed the deer. "Your aim is improving." He patted Klaus on the shoulder with a smile. "Next time!"

"You encourage him, Elijah, but he grows more pathetic every day," Mikael said as he looked at the boys.

"I'm not pathetic," Young Klaus muttered.

Mikael look at him in rage and took the bow away from him. "Do not talk back to me. You're not man enough to hold this weapon. If you can't hunt, you're nothing but a burden."

"I'm sorry," Klaus told Mikael.

Mikael grabbed Klaus by the front of the shirt. "It's a shame we can't feed on sad-eyed apologies. It's your one and only skill." He backhanded Klaus across the face.

"Father, stop," Elijah begged his father.

"Stay back, or you'll be next. The boy needs to be made strong." He kicked Klaus in the back as he's sprawled on the ground.

END FLASHBACK -

Klaus stared at Elijah after sharing the memory. Then, all of a sudden, Klaus vamp-sped away. Elijah caughy up with him quickly. "Niklaus, I understand your anger, but I implore you, be better than him. Do what he could not; demonstrate the grace of mercy, rather than this petty cruelty," Elijah begged his brother, eyes narrowed.

"You ask me to show mercy to one who has wronged me. You really don't know me at all, do you, brother?" Klaus asked his brother, still angry as you could hear it in his voice and see it on his face.

"Enough," Rebekah said as she stood behind Elijah, far enough so neither could touch her. "Whatever I have done wrong, my guilt is nothing compared to yours. You want revenge? Fine. But, before you have it, I will look you in the eye and tell you why it was your cruelty and your spite that led us to this."

"Go on, then. Speak your piece, and when you are finished, I will grant you the punishment you deserve, even if I have to go through Elijah to do so," Klaus threatened as he perched himself on top of a tomb in order to pretend to be a judge. "Let it begin. The trial of Rebekah Mikaelson."

Rebekah turned to Elijah and muttered, "What a relief. His ego is in check."

"Just speak your truth. I'll make certain he behaves himself," Elijah told his sister, looking up at Klaus.

"You stand accused of betraying your own blood. How do you plead?" Klaus asked Rebekah, fiddling with the white oak stake.

"I plead you to shut up and listen."

"You summoned our father. You brought him to our home," Klaus angrily stated, looking at his sister in betrayal and anger. "What possible defense could you have?"

"I knew he was the only thing that you feared, and I wanted you to run," Rebekah told his brother the truth.

"Because you hated me," Klaus said, some sadness in his voice.

"Because you were hateful. You denied me the freedom to love!" Rebekah yelled at her brother.

"Oh, so that's your defense You called Mikael-- the destroyer, the hunter of vampires-- because I detained you from pursuing some dull suitors." Klaus was slightly amused.

"You were cruel and controlling and manipulative."

"I was trying to protect you!" Rebekah tilted her head. "From imbeciles, and leeches. Not to mention your own poor judgment!" Klaus yelled at her.

"And what about the one that you loved enough to call friend? Why did you forbid me to love Marcel?" Rebekah asked in confusion and anger.

Klaus angrily stood up and pointed his finger at Rebekah. "Do not mention his name."

"What has happened to you? I remember the sweet boy who made me laugh and gave me gifts, who loved art and music. I wanted to be just like you," Rebekah stated in a calm but saddened voice. Klaus was obviously hit in the heart when he heard those words. "How could you have fallen so far?"

"You say you despise Rebekah for her betrayal, and yet no one has stood by your side for so long, not even I myself. Perhaps it's you that's forgotten. I remember the day that father caught you whittling little chess pieces with his hunting knife. He beat you so mercilessly and for so long, I actually feared for your life," Elijah told his brother. Klaus looked down in sadness.

FLASHBACK-- ~900 AD Mystic Falls -

Mikael is brutally beating Klaus, who is curled in the fetal position on the floor, with a whip. Elijah rushed into the room to urge him to stop. "Father! Father, please!"

"Stay back!" Rebekah ran into the room with Mikael's sword in her hands, aiming it at her father.

"Stop it! Stop it! I will not let you hurt him anymore!" Rebekah yelled at her father, eyes wide with the sword pointed towards him.

"You stand against me? For him?!" Mikael angrily grabbed the sword from Rebekah's hands and left.

END FLASHBACK -

"So, you would paint her as a loyal sister, but she betrayed me out of lust for Marcel." Klaus had unleashed tears in his eyes. "Perhaps that was why you did it-- for love." His voice cracked. "Perhaps I might temper my rage if Rebekah will admit she was a victim of her own idiocy, that her great love, Marcel, used her to oust this family and to take my city!" He yelled in a fit of rage.

"Marcel did not manipulate me," Rebekah said in a calm voice.

"You defend him, and yet you can't help but wonder, what if I'm right?" Klaus questioned, crouching. His blue eyes were bluer thanks to the tears in his eyes.

"We loved each other. It was your refusal to respect that that led to your ruin," Rebekah told him, her eyes also filled with unleashed tears.

"Then why didn't he chase after you when you fled New Orleans? Oh, yes!" Klaus stood back up. "That's right. He was here stealing what I built!"

"You want me to renounce Marcel, to beg for your forgiveness? I won't. Marcel is not at fault. I called Mikael," Rebekah informed her brother.

"Rebekah, you must--" Elijah tried to interrupt, but Rebekah kept talking.

"I was the one who brought him to New Orleans because of your wickedness!" She screamed in anger. "I wanted love and happiness, and you denied me the freedom to have either. Yes, I hated and I was afraid of our father, but he was a lesser evil than you. My bastard brother who loomed over me, threatening me as you are now." Klaus' eyes were wide, trying to keep his tears at bay. "I wanted rid of you, and given the choice, I'd do it again!"

Klaus, furious, lunges at Rebekah and pushes her against a tomb, and is just about to stake her in the heart when Elijah tackled him. When they got back up to their feet, Elijah has both Papa Tunde's blade and the white oak stake.

"Sister, leave us," Elijah told his sister.

"I'm not going--" Rebekah started.

Elijah cuts her off, "-- I said, leave us, please." He watched her leave before he turned to face Klaus. "You wouldn't listen to her. So, now, you must deal with me."

Rebekah is in a tomb at the cemetery, talking to Marcel, who is still at St. Anne's. "What a fool I am. I actually thought Davina would come to the rescue."

"I'll get someone else. Whole town is full of witches," Marcel told her.

"All of whom despise you," Rebekah stated.

"I'll figure this out. Meantime, just don't piss Klaus off any more than he already is."

"It's a little late for that. I may have provoked him further. But then, I didn't much care for his accusations that you seduced me into bringing Mikael," She didn't blink as she spoke.

"Wait a minute. I would never do that," Marcel told her. Rebekah didn't say anything for a few seconds as she sighed.

"We almost got away. If we just kept going, we could be anywhere in the world by now. Klaus might've found us and killed us, but he'll do that, anyway. Would've been nice to have a little happiness first," Rebekah said as she sat down and was in deep thought.

"He's not gonna kill you. You're his sister," Marcel said, barely believing it himself.

"And you're like a son to him, and, believe me, he means to kill you. You know, I've never much thought about dying. One of the perks of being immortal, I guess. What an odd thing it is, to be here one minute and gone the next. Rather terrifying," Rebekah said as she stared at the wall across from her.

"Rebekah--"

"You need to run, Marcel. When the moon reaches its apex, Klaus will be free, and he will do to you what he's going to do to me, only worse. Go now and don't look back." Rebekah hung up on Marcel.

Klaus and Elijah continue to fight. "So what's it gonna be? You hold both weapons. Tunde's blade would put me down, but the stake could finish me off for good," Klaus said as he looked at his brother.

"Well--unlike you, brother-- I have no taste for fratricide." He held up stake. "I only hold this to keep it from you." He held up Papa Tunde's blade. "This is just my insurance."

"Why must you defend her? Rebekah betrayed you, as well, when she brought Mikael here," Klaus told his brother in disbelief.

"Because she is our sister, and because I like to remember her the way that she was before we became what we became." He flashed back to the Mikaelson children, all five of them, as they wrestle and laugh outside. "She was an innocent girl, quick to laugh, full of life."

"My memories serve to make her betrayal more painful," Klaus stated in anger.

"Can you not then accept some small part of the blame? After all, Niklaus, it was your cruelty that led her to do what she did," Elijah told his brother, his eyes squinted.

"Do you not see, Elijah? She didn't mean to chase me off. She wanted me dead," Klaus stated, his arm out to point to Elijah.

"You're wrong."

"She has always hated me. You know that's true."

"You have no idea, do you?" Klaus tilted his head in confusion. "You have no idea what she was prepared to do for you. When our sister see's something that she perceives to be an injustice, she can be stubborn, impetuous, and, at times, downright dangerous, and never was this more apparent than the night she tried to kill our father."

In flashback, a young Rebekah grabbed a knife, and wandered over to where Mikael was sleeping, fully ready to kill him.

"What is this, some melodramatic fiction designed to garner my sympathy?" Klaus questioned angrily.

"It is the truth." Klaus looked at him in disbelief. "I was there. And she would have done it, all to protect you, had I not stopped her. I often wished that I could revisit that moment, complete the task myself."

In flashback, Rebekah steels herself to kill Mikael as he slept, but before she could, Elijah discovered what she was about to do, and grabbed the knife from her hand before yanking her back to her bed.

"Why are you telling me this now?" Klaus asked, feeling his chest tighten as he learned what Rebekah was about to do. He turned around and took a deep breath.

"Niklaus, sometimes our sister acts without thinking. She's short of temper, she's quick to fall in love, but she loves you." Rebekah listened in with he hearing, holding back tears that wanted to fall. "But, your malicious treatment has broken her heart. So, yes, she responded by summoning our father. Yes, that was a mistake. I'm not entirely sure that I can blame her." Klaus turned around and looked at Elijah.

"I can." Klaus vamp-sped to the tomb where Rebekah is hiding, but Elijah beat him there, defensively holding a weapon in each of his hands.

"Niklaus, so help me--"

"Are you really going to stand against me? And not with that pathetic blade. You'd just have to pull it out someday, and then I'd hate you as I do her, now. If you want to protect Rebekah, you'll need to use the white oak stake." Klaus started taking small steps towards his brother.

"I don't have to listen to this nonsense."

"Oh, don't pretend you haven't thought about it. You look at me, and you see everything you abhor in yourself." Klaus gestured to Elijah's suit. "Sure, you dress it up with your fancy suits and your handkerchiefs. You, with your mask of civility and eloquence, you're every bit the abomination I am. Or worse. Go on, Elijah. Go on." He lifted both his arms up. "Use the white oak stake." Elijah threw the white oak stake far away and glared at Klaus.

"I'm not so cowardly that I have to kill you, Niklaus, but if I have to make you suffer to protect Rebekah, that is what I will do," Elijah told his brother.

Klaus smirked and pointed at Elijah. "You see? I knew you couldn't do it. You still cling to the hope that I can be redeemed, and if the bastard can be saved, then maybe there's hope for you." Klaus vamp-sped over to Elijah, grabved Papa Tunde's blade, and stabbed it into Elijah's heart. "There. Now you know how it feels." Elijah fell to the ground, gasping in agony and glaring at Klaus.

"That was supposed to be my line," Rebekah announced as she showed up out of nowhere. She held up the white oak stake. "Now, I have this." Klaus looked at the stake with wide eyes. "So I decide who lives and who dies." She paused as they looked at each other. "I'm taking out that blade."

"You'll have to kill me first, and now you hold the means to do so. Why not finish what you started a century ago?" Klaus asked, looking at his sister.

"I did not want you dead. I wanted you to run," Rebekah told him, shaking her head.

"Liar! You wanted revenge!" He yelled, pointing at her.

"You drove me to betray you, and now you want to twist it and make it worse so you can justify killing me instead of accepting your own fault? All I did was love your friend! You could've been happy for us, but instead, in your paranoia, you feared losing us both. And, because of that, you did. There is no one else to blame, Nik. Only you," Rebekah told her brother, glaring at him.

"Where is Marcel now, hmm?" Klaus questioned, looking at his sister. "I thought he loved you, and yet he left you trapped in here with me." He chuckled. "You against me. It's hardly a fair fight, is it? I mean, perhaps, if Marcel were here, you'd stand a chance, but I expect he's already found another girl. No doubt younger and prettier," Klaus said as he smirked at his sister.

"You take joy in other people's pain, and then you wonder why I hate you."

"Yes, and that hatred led you to do what you did." He pointed at her. "Admit the truth. Admit you wanted me dead."

"I wanted you to run, that is all--despite your delusions," Rebekah told her brother.

"Elijah lies suffering," He gestured to their brother, "and I will allow you to help him. All you have to do is admit it," Klaus demanded her. All he wanted was the truth.

"You're insane."

"Yes! Yes!" He yelled, angrily pointing at her, his eyes narrowed. "I am a vicious, heartless monster, and so you summoned Mikael to kill me. Admit it," He told her angrily.

"It's not true!" She yelled at him.

"You know what you did. Admit it."

"I didn't."

"You wanted me dead! Admit it!"

"Maybe I did." He backed up in disbelief and sadness. She noticed this look and felt guilty and sad. "Nik--" Klaus, shocked that she actually admitted it, angrily stabbed Rebekah with the white oak stake.

Later, Rebekah woke up to find Klaus sitting, holding the white oak stake. "You missed my heart." He had his hands entwined together as he looked towards the ground in sadness.

"Perhaps I did," He whispered and then paused. "Or, perhaps I never meant to kill you. Perhaps I just wanted you to feel a fraction the fear I felt when father came for me," He told her, his eyes tearing up.

"Do you yourself know the truth?" She asked him.

"I know this. You accuse me of being evil, and yet," He looked up at her, "-- you are the one who conspired to kill your own blood."

"You made our lives a living hell. You tormented us," Rebekah told him, crying.

Klaus then let the tears fall from his eyes. "I love my family--" He gestured to Rebekah. "You, Elijah. I loved all of you ." He walked toward Rebekah and looked her in the eyes. "I know I can be difficult, but I did not make myself this way. It was Mikael who ruined me."

Rebekah whispers quietly, "He ruined me, too." She looked at him in the eyes. "That's what you forget. Centuries later, each of us is broken. You with your anger and paranoia, me with my fear of abandonment. And poor Elijah." She looked over at where he's laying, Papa Tunde's blade still stuck in his chest. "He dedicates himself to everyone but himself. We are the strongest creatures in the world, and yet, we are damaged beyond repair. We live without hope, but we will never die. We are the definition of "cursed." Always and forever," She explained to him as they both stood there, tears falling down their faces.

Klaus removed Papa Tunde's blade from Elijah's chest. Elijah screamed in agony and looks at Klaus.

"Now, we're even."

"We're still trapped in here. Whatever you're going to do to me, do it now."

"You said our father ruined us. And I can't help but wonder, what if his father ruined him?" A strong gust of wind blows the gate to the cemetery open, indicating the spell has been broken. "The barrier is down," Klaus stated.

"I know you hate me, but what's done is done," Rebekah told him, wiping away the tears that fell.

"What's done is never done. It remains within us, a story we tell ourselves so we know who we are. Vicious father, a bastard son, and the sister who betrayed him." Rebekah looked towards the ground. "Perhaps it's time for a new story. What is it you want, Rebekah?" Klaus asked his sister.

"Same things that I've wanted since I was a child. I want a home. I want a family. I want someone to love me, and I want to live," Rebekah informed him, a distant look in her eyes.

Klaus looked towards the ground, saddened but was understanding. He took a deep breath and looked up at his sister. "Then go. Go far away and never come back. We are far too damaged to remain together, less a family now than a volatile mix of ingredients. New Orleans will be mine. I will raise my child here in the city you took from me. No doubt, Elijah will choose to stay, but you? Sister, you are free."

Shocked, Rebekah took one last look at her brother and leftbthe cemetery, as Klaus watched her walk away, a lone tear falling down his cheek.

Rebekah is rounding up the rest of her possessions when Elijah found her.

"I thought I might find you here," Elijah said as he smiled at his sister.

"I just came to collect the last of my things that didn't burn to ash. I'll be leaving shortly. I don't suppose you have any desire to join me," She stated as she looked up at her older brother.

Elijah smiled awkwardly. "I do hope you find everything you're looking for."

"Elijah, when I brought Mikael, I never for a second meant to hurt you," Rebekah told her brother.

"I know."

"I was certain that Klaus meant to kill me. Whether he never really did at all, or he changed his mind...maybe somewhere, deep down, he still is the brother we once knew," Rebekah explained to Elijah, a slight smile gracing her lips.

"Very deep, but he's still in there." Elijah smiled at her, agreeing.

Rebekah walked towards him and gave him a kiss on the cheek. "Help him find his way."

Klaus returned home to find Marcel and the rest of the vampires congregated in the courtyard. "Is there a reason why you lot are loitering in my home?" Klaus questioned, he was done for the day and all he wanted to do was see Malia.

"I asked them to be here. You and I need to settle this out in the open," Marcel announced to him.

"I thought you would've run off by now."

"Yeah. Well, this is my town. You may want me to beg forgiveness, but I'm not sorry." Klaus tilted his head at him. "I may not be able to beat you, but I came here to face you, to end this in front of my people. If you're gonna kill me for that, get on with it."

Klaus looked like he's about to say something, but instead, he remained silent and headed for his room. Marcel and the other vampires are confused, until Elijah walked into the courtyard. He vamp-sped over to Marcel and threw him against the wall.

"Good evening. I trust I need no introduction. After all, this was once my family home. Tonight I'm taking it back," He announced to all of the vampires. "Your privileges here have been revoked." He then turned to Marcel. "Marcellus, out of respect for my sister, I will grant you this one mercy. I will allow you to keep your life." He pointed at him. "However, you're hereby exiled. If I so much as find a trace of you in the French Quarter, it will not end well for you. Do you understand?" He paused. "That is all. Run along."

Klaus watched from the balcony as the vampires start to file out of the compound. "Nicely done, brother. You're beginning to sound like me. I'm impressed." He then walked away.

Hayley and I were sitting around a bonfire when I saw Rebekah approaching us. I stood up and so did Hayley who stayed by my side.

"Rebekah, what are you doing here?" I asked, walking towards her.

"I came to say good-bye." I looked down to the ground and then looked back up.

"What happened to us girls sticking together?" Hayley questioned, crossing her arms.

"Well, Nik and I came to a sort of all-or-nothing arrangement. I leave town for good, and he allows me to. Can't pass that up," She informed us, a small smile on her face.

Hayley laughed sadly. "A thousand years with Klaus? I guess you deserve a few vacation days," She said and I chuckled softly.

Rebekah then turned to me. "Listen. About Nik, he is a monster. Do not ever cross him. But, he does want more from life than to just be feared. He's too broken to find it himself, but I do believe there is hope for him in the baby that you carry. And speaking of your child--our family has no shortage of enemies. She will inherit all of them. Please, be careful." I nodded sadly and then gave her a soft smile.

"You know, you can always come back and visit. I've been known to keep a secret or two from Klaus," Hayley told Rebekah and I nodded in agreement.

"Well, if I can't, you make sure to tell that little girl stories of her crazy Auntie Beks. And let her know, despite my absence, I do love her very much," Rebekah told me and I nodded, bringing her into a hug. She let go and smiled at me. She then walked away.

"Bye, Bekah," I whispered.

¤¤¤

I loved this chapter because it shows how much Klaus cares even when he doesn't show it. He loves his family but he just shows it in a different way. Everyone needs to understand that Klaus isn't a monster, he's just severely broken, he needs someone to put the pieces back together.

Here is what I always say, "A monster is not born, it is made."

Did you like that after all of that, all Klaus wanted to do was see Malia?
