Chapter 12: Learn by Doing

Like Sol, Nova spawned in the of Berry-Berry town square. What was different this time, was that Nova immediately got a quest.

[New Quest]: Escape the Town
Reward: ????, 500 XP
Penalty: 2 days imprisonment
You have been wrongfully accused of stealing the Mayors panties. This is serious, and the guards are out to get your hide.
Run!!!!

Nova clicked the only option available, "Accept", and saw the level 25 guards begin chasing him down.

Nova ran to a pile of crates near a building, and scrambled up them onto the roof, before knocking them down.

He ran along the rooftops, with the guards following closely behind.

People, presumably from the slums, had lain wooden planks between rooftops, and these helped Nova a lot. He would run across one, then pick it up, and stuff it into his bag.

Soon, only one of the many guards were following him, and Nova took this opportunity to surprise him.

The guard, who was used to only two enemies: the feisty ones, whom he quickly dispatched off, and the fleeing ones, whom he chased down, and dispatched off. The current enemy was of the second category: fleeing, so the guard had sheathed his sword to allow for better running.

It might have come as a surprise to him, then, when Nova's plank went flying into his face, stunning him for 0.5 seconds. But half a second was all Nova needed to "borrow" the guard's sword, pulling it from the sheath, and tucking it into his beginner's belt.

Nova resumed fleeing, although this guard was faster this time, partly due to his enraged mode. As Nova was running, he saw a thin board, that had a small cut in the middle, half-way deep. This was a trap to any newcomers to this rooftop world, one Nova intended to make full advantage of.

He plank-vaulted over the span, and the angry guard charged right over, onto the dodgy plank, and fell.

Nova continued running – not to the gatehouse, as that was too obvious, and he would have no chance getting past all the guards; nor to the slums, an also-obvious place, and one he would have no chance against the thieves and robbers in given his condition; but instead, to a tall house a bit too close to the surrounding wall, and freedom.

The guards, by this point, had either given up, or had gone to intercept Nova at one of the more obvious places. When Nova reached the wall, he scrambled across, hearing the surprised shouts of sentries. Looking for a soft place to land, he found one, although it was gross.

He landed onto the corpse of some monster.

Nova was glad that the corpse broke his fall, though less glad of the smell. A screen popped up:

[Quest Completed]: Escape the Town
Reward: +4 Agility, 500 XP.

[New Quest]: Locate a perpetrator.
Reward: Crime abolished, 500 XP, 20 copper
Locate the original thief of the crime or find a way to blame someone else.

[Class Unlocked]: Thief
Thieves are great with their daggers, and even better with their threats. +10% to dropped gold, and +20% to gold obtained from players. Lowers Charisma.
[Set as Main Class] [Cancel]

The four points in agility were great – Nova's game plan didn't really involve agility, not near the start, anyways. Nova was going to put points into intelligence and strength, for a nice, all-out-attack style, and the second quest was great – an opportunity to (safely) use the facilities in the small town, including the apothecary, vital for Nova's race-change plan. It involved a lot of potions. However, the downside to the quest was simply its difficulty – locate the thief, who could be hiding anywhere in the forest, or anywhere in a town determined to kill him. Nova put it aside for now. Sometimes in PLAYGROUND, classes completed themselves, either by other players or npcs completing said quest, or

. There were some useful skills of the thief, like being able to peek into other player's inventories, and later, steal stuff from them, but none that Nova needed right now, and definitely not for a main class. Nova pressed cancel.

Nova decided to allocate his stat points. At the beginning, it didn't really matter where he put them, so he put all four into "random", to see where they came out, fingers crossed for strength and intelligence.

The results were way better then he hoped for. One point was in Endurance, and another in Strength, but the other two were great – One was in Luck, which effected loot and other seemingly random stuff in the game. The only way of unlocking it was to either get it by randomly allocating points with a one in one hundred chance, as Nova did, or by finding an item or skill which boosts it, also quite rare. The remaining point was in Charisma, which was good for Nova, as he could boost it now, and when he changes his race, it would no longer be suppressed, and skyrocket. This would be a massive help in raising reputation, which in turn gave better quests, treatment, and a minimum level was required if you wanted to increase social standing.

James then checked his stats.

NovaNight [Survivor of Oblivion]

Next, however, was monster hunting in the forest.

I would recommend putting a full stop somewhere in there. That's a few too many commas.
