Making Sense
After school the day Sam and Danny went to the piano academy, me and Victoria waited for Danny to pick us up on the steps of the entrance. Stella walked to us.
"Hi Emma...Victoria."
We waved awkwardly.
"Are you doing anything this weekend?"
"Nothing that concerns you Stella," Victoria replied calmly.
"I see...at least listen to what I have to say."
"I'm a crack baby and Victoria's a dirty orphan, nice talking to you Stella," I replied.
"No it's not that at all! I was just wondering if the three of us could have a sleepover while my parents are away they're going to Italy for a week. Somewhere I always wanted to go for as long as I loved spaghetti, pizza, things of that nature. They thought I should spend my 18th birthday alone at home while they enjoy themselves out of the country. It's like they forgot it's my birthday this weekend."
"How many times have they been gone this year?" Victoria asked.
"I don't know, I don't keep count. They go to Italy every year around my birthday, they know it's my dream holiday."
That moment, I felt sorry for my former bully.
"Stella I'm sorry."
"I'm the one that should be sorry girls. I was a bitch, maybe my parents go without me to spite me, they probably know I was a bratty child. If I'm good, go to a good college, go to modeling school, I can enough money to go to Italy, maybe live there."
"There you go," Victoria grinned.
"Thank you for forgiving me. It means a lot. So, about the sleepover..."
"How about coming to our place sometime. That'll be even better."
Stella smiled and nodded.
"Thanks, I'd like that, we'll meet after school tomorrow, you can take me to your flat."
Stella walked away to go home.
"She's being emotionally neglected and thinks it's her fault," Victoria said.
"Danny still hasn't shown up. I wonder what happened."
We walked to the flat. It was quiet when we opened the door.
"Hello...Sam...Danny!" Victoria called.
I found Danny in his room, he was laying on his side looking at a new picture.
"You were supposed to pick us up," I said.
"I'm sorry," Danny replied.
"He's got another picture," I said to Victoria.
He sat up and let us look at it.
"Wanna hear what she played?" Victoria asked.
"How?"
We followed her to the piano in the living room. She found a copy of the sheet music that was found in the picture.
"There, see, Mozart Sonata No. 11. You mother played beautiful music...magical music...great music."
She started to play. Danny went from looking at the picture to deeply listening to the music. I stood a foot away from him, his eyes were closed like he was dreaming. Seconds later, his breathing was rapid, I even heard his heart beating loud. I didn't know whether to stop him or leave him be. A dream to a nightmare. As soon as the music stopped, his eyes shot open looking like he seen something awful. Turns out, Uncle Bart loaned Danny's mother money to her pay for her classes at the academy, he killed her because she didn't pay him back, little Danny was taken away.
Sam opened the door to us packing quickly.
"What's going on-"
We ran to him.
"Oh Sam! He remembered, I was playing the music and he remembered!"
"Remembered what!?"
"His mother, who killed his mother."
"You remembered who killed your mother?"
"Sam, we have to go!" Danny said.
"Wait son, wait now, before we go running off, you need to tell me what's going on. Tell me from the top!"
Danny and me looked out the window to see that white car pulled in front of the building. Danny started leading us to the broom closet.
"Danny, what's going on!?" Sam exclaimed.
"No time!"
There was no room for me in the closet so Danny dragged me to mine and Victoria's room.
"Under there!"
I was under the bed and he ran out.
