20: Not the Right Time
On the 4th day of our camping trip, I woke up early. Early as in 5 in the morning. Not knowing what to do at such time, I decided to go to a playground. It's been a while since I went to one, after all. I grabbed a thick jacket to prevent myself from freezing to death, then tried to ask for directions. Fortunately, a caterer was up early, too, and she knew the shortest ways to the nearest playground from our camp.
The short walk was quite windy and calm. Smoke came out of my mouth as I exhaled when I reached the playground. I sat on the swing and looked up at the stars. There wasn't any cloud in the sky. It was beautiful.
"When we grow up, I promise to take you to that bright star over there!" he pointed to the big round object. The small girl beside him playfully slapped his arm.
"Ruyeon, that's the moon. That's not a star!"
"Oh. Then I'll bring you to that one, instead." he moved his finger to point at a bright blue star.
"That's Jupiter. " the girl giggled. Ruyeon grunted and kicked the ground, making his swing slightly move.
"That's unfair. Is there actually a star? What if all of those are planets, Yuan? I'll never be able to take you to them." Little Yuan giggled at how her name sounded like "Nuwan" when he said it.
"You are a star," she pointed at Ruyeon, smiling. "You can take me with you everywhere."
"Yes, and I'll never leave you." he liked his arms with hers as both of their swings moved in sync. "I promise."
I involuntarily looked at the empty swing beside me. I looked back up at the stars, sighing.
"You broke your promise, Rung-Rung." i whispered. The stars just twinkled at me.
"Don't you know it's dangerous to be out alone at this hour?" For a split second, I froze, but quickly relaxed when I recognized the voice as Myungsoo's. I turned my head to see him walking from the same direction I came from earlier.
"Were you following me?"
"Of course. Just be thankful someone was concerned enough to look over you." he rolled his eyes and leaned on a metal pole nearby. He looked up at the sky like I did earlier.
"Why are you awake so early?"
"Why are you awake so early?"
"I just happened to be awake. Once I wake up, it's hard to sleep again." I shrugged. "Why are you up so early?" I asked once again with eyes narrowed. He didn't answer and kept looking at the sky. I rolled my eyes. Maybe he had a dream about monsters and was too embarrassed to speak of it. I snickered and started swinging.
"What's funny?"
That made me snicker once again. "I won't tell you unless you tell me what woke you up." he clucked his tongue in annoyance and I chuckled. My seat swung backwards and suddenly, I was pushed with suck a great force that my seat was so high up in the air and my body horizontal to the ground. I shrieked.
"MYUNGSOO!!!!" I didn't have to look to know that it was him that pushed me. I quickly swung backward and my stomach felt like it was climbing to my throat. I saw Myungsoo's irritating smirk and I would've kicked that off his face if only I didn't feel like I'll fly up to the sky anytime soon.
"STOP THIS FREAKING SWING OR ELSE I'LL BURN YOUR PIGGY-DOLL!!!" I screeched, remembering the threat Sunggyu used on him to make him walk me home a week ago. he just snorted and looked at my poor image with amused eyes.
"You don't even know where I hide it."
"AAIIIIISSSHHH!!!!!" he just laughed at me. Thoroughly pissed off to the core, I leaped off the swing no matter how high it was. I landed on the rocky sand on my hands and knees, and I didn't have to be a genius to know that I wounded myself.
"Why did you leap off like that?" Myungsoo rushed to my side and helped me stand up. I shot him a glare.
'What did you expect me to do? Stay there and let you enjoy my humiliation?"
"I was planning on letting you down. you didn't have to jump!" he didn't sound arrogant anymore. More like whiny, as if he wanted to apologize but his pride was keeping him from doing so.
"Just admit that you were acting like a jerk." I grumbled and yanked my arms out of his grasp. I walked a few steps away but my knees were in pain too. I glanced at my palms and saw bad scrapes. I was wearing jogging pants, but I guess my knees didn't survive, too. I stopped walking when they involuntarily gave up and I almost kneeled. Once again, Myungsoo was on my side.
"You can't walk. I'll carry you to the cottage to get your wounds treated." he bent down as if expecting me to climb on his back, but I just stared at him. Heck, even if I really needed to be carried, Is till had a pride to protect, too.
"Can't you just stop acting so independently and just do what's good for you?"
"Can't you just admit that you're a jerk?" I retorted and tried to walk away. Before I could even take one shaky step, I was hauled up yo Myungsoo's back. I started squirming and protesting but he held onto me tight and started walking.
"Stop moving. I know it's my fault so I'm offering my help."
I froze at that. This was the second time that I was caught off guard by his sincerity. I remember the first one as what happened in the Hwael Park. I decided to just be silent throughout the walk. I realized that the sky was already orange, indicating that the sun was about to go up in the sky. I was planning on watching the sunrise while on that swing, but this Myungsoo just had to come and ruin the plan.
We arrived the camp, where no one other than the caterer earlier was awake. Myungsoo brought me to a spare small cottage I never knew existed, and there was a hospital bed there. I realize it was supposed to be a make-shift clinic with all the medicines and stuff.
"Sit."
"I'm not a dog." I rolled my eyes but followed anyway. He took out a first aid kit and sat beside me while taking out the right tools.
"I'll do it myself." I tried to grab the cotton but he moved it away.
"Your palms are injured too."
"Oh." I silently rolled up my pants to above my knees. I winced when I saw the ugly scrape. I moved to the center of the bed so I could bring up my knees to chin level so he could see the wound better.
"You really shouldn't have jumped," he mumbled again while cleaning the wound.
"Shut up. Just finish what you're doing." silence followed after that. After he was done with my knees, it was time for my palms. I sort of hesitate since that meant he will have to hold my hand. I just pushed my consciousness aside and held out my left hand. He managed to dab alcohol a few times, and his warm hand was surprisingly gentle. I glanced at his face and honestly, his focused face was a little cute.
Aargh what am I thinking? My inner Inspirit must've woken up at that moment. Both of our heads shot up when someone slammed the door open. It was Hoya.
"I expected this cottage to be occupied sometime, but I didn't expect it to be Yuan." he hissed and grabbed Myungsoo by the shirt. I was so shocked since it was the first time I saw Hoya angry. "Didn't I tell you to stay away from her? Now look at what you've done!" Hoya proceeded to slam him against a wall, making me jump. I was afraid they'd start punching each other so I stood up to separate them.
I sternly looked at Hoya. "I jumped off the swing, that's all. Please don't hurt each other, It's just a scrape." he looked at me with a fist up in the air, ready to punch. He returned his glare at passive Myungsoo and for a moment, I thought he would continue the punch. It was a big relief when he dropped his fist and just threw Myungsoo away from him.
"Get out of here. Now." I could see Myungsoo was pissed at that, but he didn't say anything and just did as told. I watched Hoya as he started pacing while mumbling things. I sat back down on the bed and flinched when I accidentally laid my wounded palms on the bed.
"Why would you tell him to stay away from me?" that made him stop.
"I... Whenever you're alone with him, bad things happen to you. Like this, you're wounded!" he kneeled in front of me and grabbed my hand gently to see the scrapes.
"Hoya--"
"Don't call me that." his head shot up, then he looked down as if he regretted what he did. "Don't call me Hoya, please. Just Howon."
"Howon," I continued, trying to look deep into his eyes, but he kept on looking at my hands as he started applying beta-dine on the wounds. "Why do you name all of your dogs Nurung?"
For the second time, he froze. I watched him closely. "I happened to hear it on a park a few years ago and it sounded nice. I liked it eversince."
"You're hiding something from me." it wasn't a question. He gently ran his thumb on the edge of my wound and stood up to turn his back on me. "You are hiding something from us."
"Yuan, I don't think this is the right time."
"For what?" he turned around and looked into my eyes. I saw mixed emotions in his: Confusion, regret, sorrow, and something I couldn't point a finger on.
"I'll send Myungsoo back in to treat your hands."
He headed towards the door but I stood up before he could leave. "Hoya, what is this not the right moment for?"
He looked at me once again with those eyes I couldn't understand. I realized that those brown eyes look familiar.
"A confession." he simply said and left.
