Chapter 6
About ten hours later I woke up again, I felt even better. I don't know what they exactly did to me, but it helped. I felt guilty for being such a brat to Jace. He saved me and deserved better. I was too proud to tell him that tho.
I stood up and slowly walked to the light switch and pressed it. I could see the room for the first time now. It was simple. A bed, a small wardrobe, a mirror, a nightstand and a chair next to the bed. I walked towards the mirror and stared at myself. My long blond wavy hair was pretty messy and my bright blue eyes were suffused with blood, my skin even paler than usually. I fixed my hair with my hands and went to the door, slowly opening it. Darkness was behind it.
As my eyes got used to the darkness I saw some closed doors in a long hallway. It was silent. I went through the hallway until I reached a door that was open. A small light was on and dipped the room into a shine. Something or someone moved in there. I decided to move forward and search for a way out. Just in case I needed to run away, not that it was a plan for now. I promised it to Jace and I always hold on to my promises. Someone grabbed onto my arm and pulled me into the room. I wanted to scream and fight back but couldn't. "You already want to go?" It was Alec. I shook my head.
Alec: "Why should I believe you?"
Freja: "Because I promised."
Alec: "Promises mean something to you?" He smiled.
Freja: "Of course. They are all I can offer."
Alec: "Okay then, at least we are on the same side with that. What are you up to? Shouldn't you be in bed? You probably still have a fever."
He wanted to touch my forehead but I flinched.
Alec: "Do you think I want to hurt you? No one here would ever try that."
I just looked into his eyes. They looked pretty tired.
Alec: "You know what... Since we both are already up I could show you the institute. I mean, if you want. And maybe tell you something about our world."
I nodded. Alec left the room and I followed. First he showed me the training room and all the weapons. He really shows weapons to strangers? Not really a good decision, if you ask me.
Alec: "Did you ever use a weapon?"
Freja: "I used to hunt with bow and arrow from time to time."
Alec: "Hunt?"
Freja: "Yeah my food. Deer and moose..."
Alec: "Where are you from? Just go to the supermarket." He laughed.
Freja: "In the forest you prefer to hunt than to shop. What is that all about? What are you doing with all that? Killing humans?"
Alec: "No, of course not. It's our job to protect the mundanes. That's what we nephilims are for. We hunt demons and all the bad guys. Demons do exist, just like angels do."
Freja: "Angels don't exist. They are just an invention by people, who want to have something that protects them. It's in their imagination. Demons are probably real tho."
Alec: "Believe what you want. I respect it. I know it's a lot to learn. Maybe you want to have a shot?"
He undressed his jacket and several tattoos appeared on his arms. I couldn't help it, I needed to look at them.
Alec: "Those are runes. They give us certain abilities. Healing, Strength, Stamina etc. We activate them with a stele."
He showed me a silver metal stick. A wand. Great. They are wizards now. I just nodded. Whatever. Alec took a bow and an arrow and gave it to me. So now he does not only show me the weapons, he gives them to me.
Alec: "You see the target over there? Try to shoot at it. It does not matter if you miss it, it happened to..."
Before he could finish his sentence I already shot and the arrow was sticking in the circle in the middle.
Freja: "Bulls eye."
Alec: "How? It was literally the first shot!"
I gave him the bow back. He underestimated me and I didn't like that. Another bad decision.
Freja: "Jace killed something in the alley the first time I saw you two. Was that a demon?"
Alec nodded. That explained why it disappeared into nothing. For some weird reason I believed him. Demons are real. The pain became stronger again because the pain killers probably stopped to work. I flinched a bit, turned around and tried to hide it.
Alec: "We should go back to our rooms. You need to rest. We will have a lot of time to talk in the future. You should stay."
Freja: "I already had some rest. I'm fine."
Alec: "No, you clearly aren't."
He grabbed me at my upper arm, took me back to my room and pushed me back onto the bed.
Alec: "I'll get you some pain killers."
Freja: "No. I'm fine."
Alec: "Okay, go ahead. Play strong. You know where my room is in case you change your opinion."
He left and closed the door behind him.
I decided to sit down on the chair. It was cozy. I pulled my knees to my chest and rested my head onto my arms. Sleep overcame me.
Half-sleeping I could feel someone lifting me up. I woke up again. It was Jace. That dude won't just leave.
Jace: "A chair is probably not the best location to fall asleep. Lie down in the bed. Your back will thank you later on."
I wanted him to let me down and struggled. He laid me into the bed. I immediately sat up again.
Jace: "We need to have a talk, little girl. Izzy took a blood test while you were asleep. Despite exploding inflammations values she also found something in your blood we cannot explain. It may be hard to believe but all the stories are true. Angels, demons, they do exist. Warlocks do exist... And so do werewolves, faeries and vampires. We call them downworlders."
Freja: "Get to your point. What do you want to tell me?"
Jace: "You are a downworlder."
