Chapter 23

DISCLAIMER: This chapter contains a painful death and detailed scenes of killing.

Again adrenaline pumped through my veins when we entered the building. It was dark. Good for us vampires that we see pretty good in the darkness. The only lights came from the blades of the shadowhunters and the moon through the broken windows from outside. I listened and heard nothing except the steps. They stopped. Now it was completely silent. I looked over to Raphael and realized that this actually could be the last time I saw him alive. I made a step towards his direction and wanted to give him a kiss, just in case something happened but then we all heard it. Vampire hearing was not necessary. It was an enormous roar, like from a different world.

Some warriors started to run towards it, Raphael was one of them. I tried to follow but something or someone was grabbing onto me and pushed me into the corner. When I opened my eyes I could see the face of one of the werewolves. He grinned. "Nephilim, werewolf, vampire, faerie, warlock. Not all of them are immortal. Are you?" he had a deep voice and bright green eyes. "I am. Don't even try." I tried to keep cool but my stupid heart betrayed me. He laughed. "No, you are not immortal. After all your heart is still beating." His eyes started glowing. "Why are you doing that?" I asked. "My wife is a faerie. She is not allowed to leave the seelie queen because of you. Orders from the queen. One of those orders is killing you." The moment he said that he stabbed me with a little hunting knife and I fell down on the floor, the blade sticking reaching out  my abdomen. He ran away. It took me some minutes to figure the situation out. Minutes... I should have been dead. I embraced the handle of the blade and slowly pulled it out. Not much blood poured out of the wound. Some seconds later the skin was closed again and just a scar was left. I was immortal. I got up again and was even more motivated to fight, or at least to find Raphael and help him out. To death with the werewolves. I hoped they'd all die a terrible death.

I tried to search for the alive warriors. Without success. I stumbled over some dead ones on my way tho. But not Raphael. From what I know vampires disintegrate to ash anyway. I did not see any piles as ashes. I was just searching around, helpless. Every single floor on the ground floor got searched by me. Nobody was there so I decided to go downstairs and search there. Uncertainty went to fury. I was furious now. If that stupid werewolf would not have been, I could have followed the others in order to stay with Raphael.

Tears were running over my cheeks. What if Raphael dies? I can't lose him. I closed my eyes and sank on my knees, laying my hand over my heart. It hurt. If that is the feeling of heartbreak, I don't ever want to experience again. The pain was suddenly gone. In an instant I knew where Raphael was. I stood up again and in vampire speed I went upstairs, into the first floor, made my way over some more corpses and this time even piles of ashes. I was sure non of them was Raphael. I stumbled into a room and there I saw him. It was Raphael. He lay on the floor with his back leaned on the wall. Next to him I could see the werewolf from before again.

In a glimpse I pushed him on the wall with my power. "Oh you really are immortal. But I don't guess your boyfriend is when it comes to wooden sticks and iron. It will be a painful death." He laughed. The energy between the werewolf and me looked like a greenish light. It forced him to stay on the wall, like the gravity that kept us on the floor. But I really wanted to see him die. "I once said that I am able to burn an entire folk down. Guess I can show my abilities now." The greenish light changed. It turned to fire. It slowly went away from my hand towards the werewolf. I wanted to see him suffer. I just concentrated on him. The fire came closer and he started to panic and screamed. It finally reached his chest. Small flames emerged and he screamed even louder. I began to smell burnt flesh. The flames covered his whole torso now. I raised my other hand and healed him. That meant it could go on for several hours. A steady terrible pain. I wish I could have done but I thought about Raphael and just blew the werewolf up. Nothing than burnt pieces of flesh were left. I rushed to Raphael and kneeled next to him. There was a stick in his chest and I could see some silver residue around it. He was drenched in blood his breathing was weak. Almost gone. He was taking the hand of death.
