THE MOMENT

Alex, Nathan and Simon sat round a fire that Simon had made down on the beach. Nathan had called it family time, he had to beg and beg for his mother to come with them, and eventually she gave in. She was now sat with a blanket wrapped round her shoulders and her eyes. Nathan was roasting marshmallows over the flames, he asked his mother to join in with him, but she said she wasn't very hungry and roped Simon into doing it with him.

"So, now you and Katie are getting divorced, are you moving back in with the other boys?" Alex asked out of curiosity.

"Yeah...I'm going to visit my parents for a week, and I'm going to explain to them about Katie and everything, and then by the time I get back I'll have decided what I'm going to do- do I give Katie another chance or not?" He says and Alex's eyes widen at his question.

"No, you do not. She cheated on you, and got herself pregnant," Alex says, trying to keep her voice down with Nathan sat just a metre in front of her.

"I guess, but technically I cheated on her too," Simon comments and Alex sighs.

"Yes you did, but she knew that, she came all up in my face and told me to keep my slutty chef hands off you," Alex says and Simon chuckles lightly at Alex's impression of Katie.

"I wish this wasn't as fucked up as it is," Simon says and he becomes distracted by a girl who looks to be a year or two younger that Simon, his eyes looked her up and down and she gave him a gorgeous smile.

"Hey you! Come over here?!" The girl calls and Alex looks at Simon as he tells Nathan to stay put while he goes to speak to the girl.

Alex watches, eyes scanning over the girl- she'd seen her before, she was a university drop out that had come back here to live with her parents. Alex turned her attention to the sea, the waves were calm this evening and they made Alex feel better.

"Do you want one mommy?" Nathan asks, holding the marshmallow towards her.

"No thanks buddy, you eat that one," Alex says and Nathan smiles and bites down into his marshmallow, the melted goo oozing in his mouth.

"What about your friend over there, why doesn't she wanna talk to us?" The girl says, she was talking to Simon but said it loud enough for Alex to hear.

"I'm busy," Alex replies and the girl smiles.

"Too bad, you're pretty hot," The girl calls back and Alex's eyes widen, looking from Simon to the girl.

"Thanks," Alex says, a light smile gracing her lips.

Simon says bye to the girls and walks back over to Alex and Nathan, sitting down on the blanket.

"Turns out they called me over to ask if you were a lesbian," Simon says and Alex smirks.

"And your cocky ass thought they wanted your attention," Alex laughs, her smile wide.

"They were some hot lesbians," Simon shrugs and Alex rolls her eyes.

"Whats a lesbian?" Nathan asks and Simon smiles.

"Its when a woman loves other women," Simon says and Nathan looks slightly confused.

"And being gay is when a man loves a man," Alex tells him and Nathan frowns.

"Mr Kennedy said men shouldn't love men," Nathan says and Alex rolls her eyes yet again.

"Mr Kennedy is an idiot, of course men can love men, just like men and woman can be in love," Alex says and Nathan nods.

"Love is love," Nathan says and Alex breaks into a wide smile and Simon feels his heart warm, he'd never felt so proud in his life. Alex looks at Simon and the two share a moment of smiling at each other before turning back to Nathan.

"Thats right buddy," Alex says and Nathan lets out a long yawn.

"You tired?" Simon asks and Nathan nods, rubbing his eyes.

Nathan lies down, his head resting on his mothers lap.

Simon stands up and puts out the fire before gently lifting Nathan into his arms, making sure his head was supported properly. Alex collects the blankets and follows behind Simon as they head towards her home.

After a 8 minute walk and a flight of stairs Nathan is in his room. Alex helps change him into some pyjamas before tucking him into bed.

"Goodnight Nate," Alex whispers, pressing a kiss to his forehead. He whispers a barely audible 'goodnight mommy' before cuddling his teddy bear tighter.

Simon kneels down at his sons bedside and smiles softly at him.

"Goodnight son," Simon says, Alex leans against the door frame watching as Nathan gives Simon a sleepy hug before falling back into his deep slumber.

Alex and Simon creep into the kitchenette and Simon collects his overnight bag from the kitchen counter.

"I'll see you in a few weeks then," Simon says and Alex nods.

"I'll see you in a few weeks," Alex says as she leads Simon downstairs to the door.

"Call me if you need anything, you know, whether it be moving stuff or just needing to talk to someone. Remember, I'm still your best friend," Alex says and Simon nods.

"I know, I'm here for you too, in case you need advice on getting yourself a new man or anything," Simon chuckles and Alex shoves him gently.

"Hey fuck you, I'm perfectly capable of pulling men," Alex pouts and Simon smiles, eyes scanning over her lips before they meet her eyes.

"You have no idea how much I miss you when I leave," Simon says and Alex looks down at her feet.

"I miss you too, sometimes," Alex says, a smug smile on her face.

"Oh fuck off, I know you love me really," Simon says and Alex rolls her eyes.

"In your dreams, Minter," Alex says and Simon chuckles.

"You're always in my dreams, Hughes," He says, a little quieter, but the words bounce around Alex's head nonetheless.

"Is that your idea of being smooth?" Alex retorts, she wanted to lighten the mood like before.

"Yeah, I've used that on so many girls, normally it works though," Simon says, his laugh fading.

"I'll see you in a few weeks, yeah?" Alex says and Simon nods.

"In a few weeks, when I come to get Nathan for the weekend," Simon says and Alex returns the nod.

"Great, well it was nice seeing you at the party and tonight," Alex says and Simon smiles, opening the door.

"You too..." He replies, "Goodbye Alex,"

"Bye Simon," Alex mutters, eyes fluttering past Simon at the night sky.

He looks into her eyes, his hand lifts and he cups her cheek. Alex looks down, she couldn't stand this again, so he pressed a soft kiss against his cheek and moved away. Simon was disappointed, he wanted a little more, but he stepped out of the doorway and walked down the path.

Alex watched as he walked away, she wanted until he was out of sight, and then she stood against the doorframe, watching the stars, she even saw a shooting star, dashing across the sky. And in that moment she knew she still loved Simon Minter just as much as she had 6 years ago, when they made the mistake that would later become a miracle.
