Missing Heart
I shrink down against the door, breathing heavily, heart racing. I push my blue hair out of my face into a sloppily done ponytail. I take my jacket off and quickly tie it around my waist, all while sweat is dripping down my face.
Suddenly, a fist slams through the door an inch from my head. I jump up, searching for a way out. I spot an opened window and sprint towards it. I scramble to climb onto the windowsill, and I look back at the door to see him slam his foot through it.
Without thinking, I jump from the second floor window escaping death. When I land, I fall slightly and roll to my feet. Then, I sprint towards the woods, away from the old run-down cabin. I can hear a howl as I reach the towering tree line, and turn my head to see glowing eyes at the window. I duck into the cover of the trees, hoping that the thick trees and cloudy night sky will keep me hidden enough.
As I run blindly through the trees, I trip on a root, scrapping my pale knees. I scramble to my feet again, and I am suddenly pulled to my right. The hand lets go of my arm as quickly as it grabbed me, and I jump, turning around as I pull my silver knife from my waist band.
"Slow down tiger, I'm here to help." I hear a young feminine voice say.
"Who are you?" I breathe, turning my head to make sure I wasn't followed.
"Alexa. Call me Lexi. Now come on." I can make out a slim silhouette of a girl. She's about an inch shorter than me, maybe five foot five. She has her long hair pulled into a braid down her back.
"What makes you think I'm going with you? I don't know you."
"Yes you do, I just told you. I'm Alexa, call me Lexi. Now let's go!
"That's not what I me-" The words die from my mouth as she quickly grabs my wrist again, and we venture further into the thicket.
I try to wrench my hand from her grasp, but I quickly learn that she's strong as a bull. "Where are you taking me?"
"Just shut up and run if you want to live." She says sharply, and I reluctantly go with her.
Five minutes later we reach a road, and I can see a black Cadillac sitting in a ditch, headlights on. I can see Lexi clearly now. She has pitch black hair, black skin, a purple tank top ripped on the right side, left side tucked into her jean shorts.
"Get in." She shoves me towards the back seat.
"Why should I?" I ask, crossing my arms
"Do I need to tell you again? I'm saving your life. I'm kind of doing you a favor. Now, I won't say it again. Get in." She wrenches the door open and shoves me in the back seat. As soon as she gets into the car, I realized she sat in the passenger seat. Before I can ask why she isn't in the driver's seat, I hear another, deeper voice speak.
"Took you long enough."
"Shut up Aaron, just turn the damn car on."
Aaron lets out a hearty laugh, as if he doesn't know that a werewolf was just chasing me.
The car starts, and Aaron pulls onto the road. Lexi reaches over to turn on the radio, but Aaron swats her hand away. "Come on Lex, we gotta introduce ourselves to our guest. You know how I feel about talking with the radio on."
I watch as Lexi slouches in her seat. "I already did." She grumbles
"Oh really? What's her name then?" He queries.
"I dunno, but she knows mine."
Aaron sighs, running a hand through his raven colored hair. Before he says any more I cut in.
"Um, hi, yeah, sorry to interupt but, well, if you didn't notice, I was just about to be killed by a werewolf. So excuse me, but I think there are more important matters than knowing my name."
"You want to help us kill it right?"
"Well, obviously, it got my family, so-"
"Then we need to know names. It helps." Aaron says joyously. Lexi scoffs. "I'm Aaron, that's my sister Lexi, and you are?" He says, glancing at me through the rearview mirror.
"Sophia."
"Well then Soph, let's-"
"Sophia." I say sternly.
"Okay, fine. Sophia, let's head back to the motel. Tell us everything you know." He grins.
"Like what?"
"Like, when did the werewolf come for you? Do you know him in his human form? Everything."
"Okay fine, but you will have to answer my questions as well."
"Whatever makes you feel satisfied."
We drive in silence, passing other cars and the occasional house, until we reach the motel they are staying at. We get out of the car, slamming the doors behind us, and walk to the motel room.
Once we get inside, I see two beds at the back of the small room. There is a tiny kitchen off to the side and a desk near the beds. I sit down at the small table near a window, Aaron turns to me. "So?"
"Oh, uh, well, his name is Evan, Evan Niles. Our families sorta hate each other, our families own rival companies. Up until about two months ago, Evan was perfectly normal. Sure, we hated each other, but he was a really sweet kid. Two months ago, he started to come to school tired and fidgety. He started to block out his friends and refuse to communicate in any way with anyone. Then a month ago, My dad went missing. Three days later, I found him outside our door when I came home from a swim meet late at night. It was the weirdest thing, his heart was missing. Then, three days later, my mom was missing. I was scared, I didn't want what happened to my dad to happen to my mom, but the same thing happened. I came home from a swim meet, around ten at night, and my mom was at our doorstep. Lying there. Heart missing. Obviously, I screamed, ran inside and called the police. My brother came downstairs to ask why I was screaming. I pointed to the door, and he went to see. He came inside all shaken up. I mean, who wouldn't be after they've seen both of their parents dead, heart gone? The police came, and looked for clues while my brother and I went to our Aunt's house. Three days later, my brother was taken. I was to overwhelmed with fear and worried that my Aunt let me skip school for the rest of the week. On a Saturday night, I went out with some friends to clear my head. When I came home, my brother was dead, lying at the doorstep, heart missing. I instantly ran inside to tell my aunt and she called the police. Then, once again, three days pass, and I wake up in a strange room. Thankfully, ever since my mom was killed I started to carry a knife with me." I pull out the silver knife from my waistband to show them. Lexi leans forward to look at it.
"Silver, lucky grab." She says, nodding at me.
"Yeah, it was just the first knife I saw. I guess I did get lucky."
Aaron sits forward, placing his arms on his knees, and his head in his hands. "So what happened next?"
"Oh right, well, it was around three this afternoon that I woke up. I was able to walk around the cabin but I had no idea where I was, so, being the idiot I am, I stayed. That night, Evan came. Sure I don't like him, but I was just glad to see someone else. When he looked at me, he had fear clouding his eyes. I was extremely confused so I walked closer to him and asked him what was wrong. He shook his head, backing away from me. Then, I saw his eyes eyes widen and he crouched down, grunting. I watched as his shirt ripped, and fur sprouted all over him. He grew claws, and ears. And so I ran, found an open window and jumped out. And two minutes later Lexi grabs me and here we are." I finish, hands in my lap, staring up at Aaron.
"So, now we know why he would go after your family." Aaron comments while standing up.
"And that he went in age order." Lexi says, loading a gun with silver bullets.
"And we know for sure that he goes to that cabin when he changes."
"Okay, yeah, but I thought werewolves only changed on full moons." I say confusedly.
"Yeah, that's true but also false." Aaron says, shrugging his shoulders.
"How is does that make any sense?" I scrunch up my eyebrows. "It literally makes none. No sense, whatsoever."
"Pure bloods can change anytime they want, This kid, Evan, is not a pure blood, but he must have been bitten by one. When you're bitten by a pure blood, then you change every night, whether you want too or not. He can't control anything he does at night. But if he bites someone, then they only change on the full moons." Lexi pipes in. She jumps up from her seat and stalks towards the door. She opens the door and walks outside, slamming it behind her.
"What's her problem." I ask, staring at the white door.
Aaron shakes his head, sighing. "She is just angry at everything. A vamp got our mom when we were five, and a djinn got our dad four years ago. We were thirteen."
"Oh, that's awful, but um, whats a djinn?"
"It kidnaps it's victims. Hooks them up to some machine to drain them of blood. While you are hooked up, they put you in a deep sleep, and you're in a dream, basically your fantasy life. The 'perfect life.' But there is always something wrong. A djinn can drain you of blood in two or three days, however, in your dream state, it seems like a lifetime. It's probably the most peaceful way i've seen a monster kill someone." I watch as he swipes at his eyes.
"Wow, that's-"
The door opens again and Lexi is standing in the doorway. "You guys coming or what?"
"Yeah, we were just heading out." I tell her. "Let's go." I say taking a deep breath in.
We walk outside, and head towards the car. We clamber in, and drive off to the cabin in the woods. It takes about ten minutes to drive the whole way, and no one speaks. When we're halfway, Lexi turns on the radio and the song Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi comes on.
Five minutes later, We pull into the same ditch the car was in when I first saw it. We all quietly get out of the car. Werewolves, apparently, have good hearing. Lexi and Aaron go to the trunk, and open it up. At first I was confused why, but then Aaron pushes a button on the side of the inside of the trunk, and a compartment opens up. I see an array of weapons that help them defeat the monsters they hunt.
"Take your pick." Aaron gestures to the weapons. Lexi grabs three silver knives, tucking them in her belt. She grabs a gun and loads it. Aaron takes a knife, slipping it in his right boot. He picks up two guns, loads them, and tucks on in his waistband. I touch the small knife in my waistband, reach over and I grab another one. I take a gun and load it, remembering when my dad taught me last summer.
We all turn towards the trees. I take a deep breath and we walk into the forest. We creep along the trees silently for a couple minutes. Eventually we come to the clearing where the cabin is, I look up at the two story building. It's old and run down, the left side of the roof looks to be sagging a bit. We stop at the tree line and listen for a couple seconds. I can hear faint scuffling from inside the cabin.
"Okay, I'll go in first, Aaron you follow, Sophia, stay close behind him."
"Aye aye." I whisper to myself. Aaron hears, and lets out a quiet laugh. I grin at him.
We dash across the yard to the back of the cabin. Lexi waits a beat, looks at us, nods her head, then kicks the door open. We run inside, and I can hear creaking from the upstairs part of the cabin. We walk into the next room, guns out in front of us. Lexi finds the stairs and we inch up the stairs as silently as possible. We walk into the room I escaped through. We hear a growl from the room next to us, and we all turn towards it. Lexi walks out of the room we are in, and into the next one. Seconds later I hear her scream. Aaron and I dash into the room, and I see Evan in his werewolf form leaning over Lexi, saliva dripping from his mouth. Lexi is clutching her arm, blood seeping through her fingers.
I look at Aaron and I can see pure rage in his eyes. He raises his gun and shoots it, right as Evan turns and leaps for us. Evan falls to the ground, howling in pain. I see Aaron walk over to Lexi, not noticing that he didn't kill Evan. Evan bares his fangs and reaches for Aaron, grabbing his ankle, tripping him. I raise my gun and shoot. Evan flops back to the ground, dead.
"Thanks." Aaron nods at me, getting back up.
I nod back. "Yeah, yeah." I say faintly, my hands are shaking a bit from killing Evan.
Aaron looks back at Lexi, remembering that she's hurt. "Lexi! What did he do. It's just a scratch right? It has to be just a scratch."
Lexi shakes her head, silent tears streaming down her face. "I didn't see him, he was hiding behind the door. I walked in and he jumped me. Aaron, he bit me. I was bitten, I'll change the next full moon, and I can hurt you. You need to shoot me."
Aaron shakes his head. "No, no I can't. There has to be a cure." He says desperately.
"Aaron. You know there isn't, we tried with Josh, it won't work. All the cures are false, fake, nothing can work." Lexi argues sternly.
"But-"
"Aaron, please. I don't want to hurt anyone." She pleads.
"Lexi, I can't." Aaron whispers, kneeling down.
"Then, Sophia, please."
"What?" I ask, shocked.
"Sophia, please, I don't want her to suffer." Aaron begs.
"Okay, yeah, I'll do it."
Lexi sighs. "Thank you."
I finger the trigger on the gun, and raise it to aim at Lexi's head. "I'm so sorry." I whisper, looking away.
"It's okay, I get to see my parents again, I'm okay."
I look back at her, I notice a small smile on her face. I close my eyes, take a deep breath, and re open my eyes. I put my finger on the trigger, and pull it. A bang goes off, and Lexi falls to the ground, a gun wound in her head.
Aaron walks stiffly over to his sister. He bends down, and scoops her into his arms. I walk over and stand next to him. He tells me to grab the lighter in his pocket, and I do so. He grabs a small flask from his front pocket, and hands it to me. "Pour that over Evan. Then light it."
I do as I'm told, and I watch Evans body burn.
"Let's go." Aaron mumbles. I nod, following him out of the cabin, knowing he doesn't want to talk. We walk into the woods, and find another small clearing. Aaron lays Lexi down on the ground. "Wait here, I'll be back in a second."
True to his word, I see Aaron re emerge from the trees, holding two shovels, and some gasoline. He tosses a shovel to me, and I catch it.
"We're going to dig her a grave." He states, and immediately starts to dig.
Twenty minutes later, we have a grave, long enough and deep enough, to place Lexi in. Aaron picks her back up and places her in the grave. He then unscrews the cap on the gas, and pours it over her body. He grabs some matches from his pocket, lights them, and throws them onto Lexi. We watch the flames engulf Lexi's body. We stay and watch until the flames die down, and even a little afterwards.
Eventually Aaron sighs. "I guess we should get you home. Your aunt is probably worried."
I scoff. "Yeah right. She hates me, she probably wishes I was dead."
"Then, you could come with me?" He asks. I glance at him, his eyes pleading. He doesn't want to be alone. How could I blame him. Being alone sucks.
I grin at him. "Yeah, okay sounds good."
He looks straight into my eyes, smiles and raises a hand to my face. I didn't notice that his other hand was reaching down to his boot, he swiftly pulled out the knife and in one simple silver sweep he carves my heart out of my chest and I fall back onto Lexi's grave.
