CHAPTER 21 : Light on the Shade
JAE RA : WHAT?
SEO-IN : Yeah, I and Oppa have planned to recieve mother-in-law's blessings too. Besides, her memorial is soon so, we want all family members to be there with us.
JAE RA : That's really thoughtful of you two. But, I wonder if Uncle will agree on my accompany.
SEO-IN : I know, right? He is totally against that. But then, don't worry. Oppa will definitely persuade him. (-smiles-)
JAE RA : (-holding her hand-) Gumawo(thanks). It has been years seeing my parents. I would finally get to pay them a visit thereupon. (-sad smile-)
SEO-IN : (-trying to lighten the mood-) Yah, aren't you excited? Those middle school fun? I really miss those days in Korea.
JAE RA : (-smile nod-) Me too. Let's have a great time.
Meanwhile, in his room, her Uncle was occupied pondering over a way out to manage the ruins, Sungyeol did to his perfect plan.
JaeRa's memory recollections that she had been deliberately trying to hide from him, didn't actually slip his notice. He only chose to pretend a blind eye to it, so that she isn't cautious any further.
However, he feared better and bigger recollections from her and wanted to get his hands on her patrimony as soon as he could.
Mr. Jang, master mindedly conned her into signing the papers only for his own son to break through and unleash his scam.
If only, he succeeded to transfer her father's will to solely his name, he planned to expel her out of his house. He would no longer care if she recalled her lost memories then.
All his life, he had one petty dream– to give SungYeol all the comfort and luxury. His selfless desire fed on his depression and sudden increment of responsibilities with Jae Ra when her parents died.
Gradually, the failed father was transpired into a barbarous self causing him to indulge into anything, but a righteous track.
SUNG YEOL : (-knocking twice-) Abeoji, I am coming in.
SungYeol entered snapping him out of his thoughts as he was faced to the window, his back to the former.
SUNG YEOL : Abeoji, is everything fine with the company? I mean, if things were this bad. Shouldn't you have called me? I wonder, why my secretary didn't contact me about the company.
Even though, he was away in France or had a separate business from his father's, he cared for the latter's company. He held himself as the major shareholder of the same and would often have updates from a secretary he had assigned to the company.
There was no way, Mr.Jang could con him with the same lie for he would find it out sooner or later.
Mr.JANG : Company is fine. Don't worry about it. (-casually sits on the couch-)
SUNG YEOL : Fine? Then, why was she signing those? (-realizing-) Abeoji. It's not that, right? You aren't after her patrimony, are you?
His father's silence, ironically, spoke to him leaving him in peculiar unsettling emotions.
SUNG YEOL : Abeoji~ How can you do that to her? She is your niec-
Mr.JANG : (-cutting him off-) So, what? Her parents just crowned an ache on my head. All she did was leech off me. What is so wrong to have my pay back now? (-pouring a glass of wine-)
SUNG YEOL : ABEOJI~!
Mr.JANG : (-raising voice-) I was doing this for you, Imma!
SUNG YEOL : What? I can't believe this.
There was a split moment of silence in the spacious room. SungYeol felt an aloofness greater than the actual distance between them.
It was unimaginably difficult for a son to accept the chance discovery of his father's evils. The one whom he grew up respecting and looking up to.
Finally coming to a maturity to understand his father's decision sending him away only for his better future, he was totally shattered now learning the true him. He was in a guilt of spending his tender years in resenting his father but the very him looted SungYeol off a chance to make it up for, in his adulthood.
SUNG YEOL : (-with a heavy heart-) I'll tell her all about your nasty intentions.
Mr.JANG : (-chuckles-) Do you think she would believe you?
He was stopped right when he had twisted the door knob half way. His grip slowly loosened, the knob locking back as he turned himself to let his father complete his threatening words.
Mr.JANG : What would happen, if you tell her? Is anything going to change? She may be homeless or may even be jobless, to add. Don't forget, your father has a good connection now.
SUNG YEOL : (-sighs in disbelief-) When did you become so evil. She considers you as her ....(-sighs-) Nevermind, she has her brother by her side now.
Just about to leave, he stopped to say one last thing.
SUNG YEOL : I've always felt sorry for mom that she died because of me. But, I think I won't be sorry anymore. I saved her from seeing you like this today.
He lashed out slamming the door while his father sipped his wine without the slightest affect to the former's resentful words.
Sung Yeol was at loss of words for it felt totally unbelievable to recognize the person, he just talked to, as his father.
Jae Ra, regardless of their actual relationship, was always like his own little sister. Never had he thought that he would one day be the reason of her unhappiness and sufferings.
Preoccupied in the marsh of thoughts, he didn't realize when his feet walked him to the hall. Only until watching Jae Ra's smile, had he locked himself in a vicious quagmire of absolute remorse and guilt.
He was never in such a flummoxed and helpless position as of then, neither he could tell her the truth nor could he forgive himself for keeping her in the shade.
SEO IN : Onh? (-looking at him-) Oppa, what are you doing there? (-goes to him-)
He was snapped back from the perplexity and avoided matching eyes as he spoke to put a cover on his surfacing vulnerable mien.
SUNG YEOL : Onh? No-nothing.
He was literally dragged by his wife to Jae Ra as Seo In continued the conversation.
SEO-IN : Oppa, I just told her about our plan for Korea. (-holding his arm-)
JAE RA : Yeah, is that true? Are we really going to Korea? (-bright smile-)
SUNG YEOL : (-nodding-) Yes.
JAE RA : (-remembers about her Uncle-) Ah! Is Uncle fine though? Did you talk him out well?
SUNG YEOL : Jae Ra-ya. Don't worry about him. He is not worthy of it.
Before Jae Ra could come out on his disgraceful words, he marched further and simply hugged her.
JAE RA : Yah, Sung yeo-
SUNG YEOL : (-cutting her off-) I am sorry, Jae Ra-ya. I am really sorry.
JAE RA : Onh? (-awkward laughs-) Yah, what happened, suddenly? What are you sorry about?
Instant with an excuse, he released the hug in order to normalize his already strange attitude towards her.
SUNG YEOL : (-fake laughs-) Earlier, I didn't let you sign those papers. You wanted to earn credits by helping him but I snatched them away. So, I am sorry.
JAE RA : (-chuckles-) Yah, you are so silly! Are you really 28? (-punching him lightly-)
He just selflessly smiled.
JAE RA : (-yawning-) Anyways, I am really tired. I am going to sleep. (-coming closer to whisper-) You two, don't be too loud. Please be considerate. My room's right above yours.
SEO-IN : (-blushing-) Yah, shut up!!
Jae Ra sped towards her room with a chuckle before Seo-In landed her uncountable hits.
SEO-IN : Oppa?
SUNG YEOL : (-looking at her-) Hmm? (-fake smiles-)
SEO-IN : Something isn't right, is it? Anything wrong with Jae Ra? (-concerned-)
Hating to burden her with the truth and make her feel impotent like himself, he without a choice, lied to Seo-In.
SUNG YEOL : (-smiles-) It's nothing, just work related. Don't worry. Let's sleep and let's keep it down today. (-smirks-)
SEO-IN : (-goes closer squeezing his butts-) Shall we?
He was caught off guard for a moment at her sudden dominance. Soon a smirk followed by, wanting to see how long she could handle his domain. Sung yeol sensually sided her hair strands with his fingers, to increase the tension further.
SUNG YEOL : (-speaks in a husky raspy tone-) Shall I go easy on you or will you try staying quieter?
His professional hands immediately belted around her waist at the shiver she experienced.
SUNG YEOL : You okay-
She cut him off, smashing her soft plump lips on the naturally red his. Her deliberate fight for dominance, transparent from the kiss excited him further as he closed his eyes pressing her figure tight up against him.
They were so immersed in the moment that it slipped their attention of their open location. Only until a notification beeped in her phone and they tore apart with uneven breaths.
Seo-In nervously roamed her eyes here and there and rushed to their room avoiding his gaze.
Sung yeol chuckled following her no seconds later, closing the door behind them.
Elevating a floor above them, JaeRa was fluidly lying on her bed. Thoughts of visiting Korea after 3 long years seemed to excite and nervous her at the same time.
JAE RA : It's gonna be just fine, right?
Meanwhile, seas away at a night hour before midnight struck in, the Kim family had a safe landing on the Korean peninsula.
