"You really don't like people, do you?"
You peek over at Jungkook, raising a brow. "Do you?" you ask back.
"I asked you first," he says, sitting in the corner. It's only been a day since you officially met Jungkook, but he already seems trustworthy. Maybe it's because he's one of your kind, or maybe it's because of something else. You just feel at ease around him. You wish you knew why.
"I don't mean to be so cold, it's just... if they get close to me, they could die," you say in a mumble. "The work I- I mean, we do keeps them safe. I can't let them get close. The last time that happened, it went south. People need to stay back, that's what's best for all of us."
He doesn't disagree. It goes quiet for a moment, you sitting in the opposite corner of the room with your knees against your chest while Jungkook moves to sit on his crappy bed with his eyes never leaving yours. In the few beats of silence, you avert your gaze, attempting to fall back into your thoughts. However, that quickly changes.
"I hurt someone too," he says.
You hesitate, toying with the words on the tip of your tongue. "I'm so sorry."
He dryly chuckles. "Are you kidding? You've spent your whole life thinking you're alone. No childhood, no parents, no friends, nothing. Don't say sorry to me, I should be the one telling you that."
"Just because I went through pain doesn't mean you haven't too. No one's pain is more important than the other. What matters is we went through it, and we can help each other through it. Together." Thanks to how cold you were when you first met him, he's astonished by your words.
The first time you met, you thought he was a human. The last thing you needed was another human dying under your care. That's why you're always so harsh to the public. Ever since that day, you've been different. Maybe now that can change. Now that you're with your own people.
"Thank you," he whispers. "I really appreciate that. And the same applies to you. We're together now, we were meant to be together." For some reason, you took that the complete wrong way and burst out into a coughing fit, Jungkook peering at you in concern. "Woah, what's wrong?"
After you calm down, you swallow your pride and answer. "I choked on my own saliva. The usual. Demon Hunter that can't even swallow right."
He snickers. "You can't be any worse than Jimin. One time I saw him knock his own ass out trying to sit down. He was swinging his legs around to be all cool looking, then he hit himself in the face and went crashing down. Funniest shit ever."
"You seem like you know him well," you say with a laugh.
"Oh yeah, him and Tae are my best friends. I'm like Namjoon's second in command, so Joon's one of my besties too."
"So how did you all find each other? I know we're Hunters so we're naturally drawn together, but is there a story there?"
"Believe it or not, there is. We have the original seven boys, Namjoon, Jin, Yoongi, Hoseok, Jimin, Taehyung, and me. We were all in the same neighborhood, our parents kept us together since we were special. But then, the big attack happened," he says, his voice trailing off at the end.
You immediately know what he's referring to: the attack that took almost all Demon Hunters off the face of the planet. The one your parents died in. Demons go from class 1 to 5, but that day, something came out. No one's sure where it came from, but it was too big to be a class 5. It was the first and only class 6. Hunters from across the globe came to help, but ended up dying. It was a disaster that left only ten Hunters left, then they died out from the amount of work they had. That's how you ended up being the last known one left. It had been almost fifteen years since the attack happened.
"My parents told me to take the others and run. I was only eight, and I had to gather the other kids and run. We ran like hell, met up with some other kids who were told the same thing. Griff, Apollo, Jayden, Val, and Raven were part of that group. There were more, but... you know. As we grew up, we trained together. We fought in the shadows. We never wanted to be discovered after the night our parents died. They wanted us to be safe, so we took our own route."
You take in his words, nodding at the end of his speech. "And there was a girl," he mutters, tearing up.
"You don't have to tell me," you say, but he ignores you.
"Her name was Adeline. Human who joined all the running kids. She thought they were going on an adventure, and in our frenzy, we didn't think to ask her if she was one of us. When we found out, we tried to take her back, but her parents died in the attack. The entire neighborhood was gone. So we kept her, kept all the swords locked down, warned her about the danger." He sighs, closing his eyes. "She was seventeen. She lasted all those years around us. I loved her."
Your eyes widen at his confession, unsure if you should speak or not. He takes a moment, then continues. "I have something to tell you because you're the only one I feel like I can tell. Not even the others know. Only Jimin does."
"Are you sure? I'm just a stranger."
"Then why do I feel like I know you already?" he asks, searching your eyes for an answer.
"I... I don't know," you whisper, mostly because you feel the same. One look into his eyes and it feels like you've known him your entire life. You didn't get that way around the others. Why him?
There's a heavy silence between you two, then, he lets out a shaky breath. "I'm a half-breed."
Your jaw drops, your eyes almost popping out of your skull. "No, you're not 'a half-breed', you're the half-breed, aren't you?" He keeps his mouth shut. "The half-breed in the legends? The one that was in the prophecy, the one meant to save us all? To bring balance back to our kind and save us?" you ask, hopping to your feet.
He shakes the thought away as if swatting a fly. "No. I'm just a half-breed, not the half-breed."
"There's never been any other half-breeds Jungkook. Is anyone else here a half?" No answer.
"My mom was a Hunter, my dad was a human," he says instead. "They told me to never share that I'm a half-breed. I had to tell Jimin though, he has a way of reading people. There was no way I was getting out of telling him, and you? I don't know why, but I feel like I have to."
You frown, sympathy lighting up in your eyes. "I'm so sorry." Deep down, your heart is beating faster than ever before. Here you are, sitting across from the prophecy. He can claim he isn't the half-breed mentioned, but he has to be. He just has to, there's no other half-breeds around.
"Adeline... I told her what I am, and she told me we could work. I'm half human, so she thought we were destined to work. I wanted her more than anything, but I couldn't risk her getting hurt. We started fighting and fighting, yelling at each other about our feelings and what to do when I wanted to just walk out. She went to grab the edge of my jacket, but she brushed her fingers across the hilt of my sword."
Jungkook breaks off, you giving him the time he needs to think. "She died in my arms, screaming about how she felt like she was burning from the inside. The others came to help, but we all knew it was too late. I wasn't even sure how to react I was just... so numb. I was only eighteen at the time. Five years ago now."
"Jesus, I'm so sorry," you say, tears welling up in your eyes at his story.
He sniffles, abruptly standing. "I uh, I think I'm gonna go get some food. I'll be back later," he says, his voice cracking as he walks out of the room. You just sit there, stunned and speechless. This poor man has been through too much.
You wish you could take his pain away.
~~~
"You should eat."
You glance at the man, raising a single brow. "Why are you so nice to me?" Griffin shrugs, handing a plate of chicken to you. Despite your initial hesitance, you take it. "Thank you," you mutter, him softly smiling. He peers at you for a moment, causing you to meet his irises. "Everything okay?"
He seems to be taken out of his trance at the sound of your voice. "No, it's just... you remind me of her."
"Her?"
"My little sister." Without another word, he turns, about to walk out.
"Griff, wait," you say, the man pausing at the door. "Can I meet her? Is she Raven or Val?" He goes stiff. Oh no.
"Two years ago. Sacrificed herself to save me," he mumbles. "It should've been the other way around. It's my biggest regret to this day. But I know she's happy, so I can't complain too much."
"I'm sorry, I should've been more careful. I should've known if she isn't Val or Raven, then..."
"It's okay, really. We all have those dumb moments sometimes, don't beat yourself up over it." He comes back over, kneeling in front of you. "Honestly, I'm glad I told you." He scans over your face with a smile. "You look just like her."
After a moment, he lets out a sigh and stands, going back to the door. "Sorry, don't mean to be weird or creepy or anything, it's just..."
"You haven't seen her in two years," you say. "And you see her in me. I get it, don't worry. If I saw my mom or dad in anyone here, I'd probably never leave their side." He shoots you a smile, a sparkle of joy going off in his pale blue eyes.
"Oh, take my advice: if Apollo starts being an asshole, ignore him. He's a softie deep down, but he's pretty cold on the surface. That's why he's always around Yoongi."
You chuckle. "Seems like we all could use some people skills, huh?"
"Seems like it. Have a good night now, I'll check on you in the morning."
With that, he leaves, you still smiling from the encounter. He's been nothing but a sweetheart to you, telling you to join the team, bringing you food, wishing you a good night. What more could you ask for? Looks like he's the resident sweetheart while Yoongi and Apollo are the cold ones. No big deal, maybe you can crack their cold hearts too.
You eat in peace, the small, corridor-like room almost comforting. You haven't reported to Taemin at all, but you're not worried. The others are taking care of business, so if Taemin finds any demons, they'll be taken care of. Hopefully he'll assume that's you on the case. Hopefully.
After a solid twenty minutes, you finish your food. You've always been a slow eater. Not because you can't chew right or you're paranoid about choking or you want to savor the taste; you just think a lot while eating. It seems like your only chance to find peace in a world where you're constantly fighting. However, after you're done, you can't help but feel lonely.
Last night, Jungkook stayed with you, and you can't help but want him to do that again. So, you grab the phone placed in each room for easier communication, looking at the chart on the wall. Jungkook said he's in room one. Literally room number one. If that's not showing he's the prophecy child, you don't know what is.
You pick up the phone and dial the number for room one, patiently waiting for him to answer. After a few rings, he does.
"Hello?"
"Hey. I hate to be a bother, but I have to go in the morning, can you, uh..."
"Stay with you?"
You bite your lower lip, nodding despite the fact that he can't see it. "Yeah. Sorry, I don't mean to-" He hangs up, leaving you standing there.
Well, that's interesting. After only a minute, your room door opens, revealing a tired Jungkook. He comes inside, closing the door behind him and walking over to the second bed in the room. You watch as he sits on it, his bare feet hovering an inch off the ground as he takes off his shirt.
Your jaw practically falls to the ground at his sudden move. He tosses his shirt away, cracking his neck before peeping at you. Great, you're just gawking. Nice one Y/N.
"Oh, sorry. I kept my shirt on last night for your sanity, but I never sleep with a shirt on."
"Right, that makes sense. Right. Um... nice abs."
"Thanks."
He lays down, yawning and bringing the covers over himself. You rub your eyes, making sure this is really happening. It is. Damn.
You turn off your lamp, plopping down on your own bed and preparing to sleep. It's silent for a few minutes, the soft sounds of his breathing filling you with comfort.
"I'm sorry I'm so awkward," he suddenly says. "I dropped so much on you today, and now I can't even bring myself to say goodnight. What's wrong with me?"
"Nothing," you reply, turning to face his bed. He does the same, opening his eyes to meet yours from across the room. "There's nothing wrong with you, you've been through a lot. Don't beat yourself up. You can tell me anything. Sometimes it's good to have someone from the outside to talk to. Maybe that's why I want to tell you everything too, even the dumb things like my favorite animal and favorite color."
"What are they?" he asks, waggling his brows.
"My father's favorite was a tiger, so I think mine's the same. As for favorite color? Ah, hard decision. Maybe red."
"Mine's red too."
"You look like yours would be black."
"Really? What makes you say that?"
You motion to his black shorts, then his black t-shirt on the ground. "Just a guess." You give him an amused look before continuing. "Favorite animal?"
"Don't laugh," he says.
"No promises." He gives you a pout, you shaking your head. "Fine, I'll try. That's the best you're getting." He sucks in a breath, then fires it out.
"Brachiosaurus."
"A fucking what?"
"Brachiosaurus."
"Yeah, I got that, thanks. I meant what do you like so much about them? Aren't they the big necked bitches?" you ask, raising a brow.
"Big necked bitches," he repeats, exasperated. "You know, maybe that's exactly what I like about them."
"You're impossible," you mutter, unable to stop the grin spreading to your face.
"On that note, I think we should sleep," he says.
"Nu uh, I sleep first, you snore so loud I'm starting to think you're a car and not a Hunter."
He laughs. "Fine, fine. I'll hold off for a bit."
Jungkook snickers to himself, turning over to try and sleep. But you can't let him go. Not yet. "Hey Jungkook?" He hums. "Goodnight," you softly say. You can almost hear his smile.
"Goodnight."
