Chapter III: Growth
"Come one Yang." You laugh, offering her a hand up. "You gotta keep moving."
"Easy for you to say." She groans, massaging her lower back. "You haven't been getting knocked on your ass by your boyfriend for the last hour."
"True." You say as you put some distance between the two of you, preparing to go another round. "But you're the one who asked for my help. So, get your guard up."
"Come on." She whines. "Haven't we done enough training for today? You know Ruby, Weiss, and Blake are out for the day." She says with a seductive look.
"Oh, come one." You chuckle. "Don't tell me you're getting tired already."
"Pfft, no way." Yang smiles. "I'm just saying, if I'm gonna be sore for the next few days I'd rather it be from the bedroom."
You roll your eyes. "Tell you what. How about we make a little wager." You suggest. "If you can get me off my feet in the next thirty minutes, we'll call it a day and take our training to the bedroom."
Yang looks interested, her lips curling upwards into a small smirk.
"But," you continue, "if you can't, you agree to go another hour with no whining or complaining."
Yang takes a minute to contemplate your offer, biting her lip as she thinks about it. "And I just have to get you on the ground?"
"That's it." You nod.
"Alright. Deal."
"Good. Now, get your hands up."
Yang raises her hands in front of her face, her hands curled into tight fists. You raise your own arms, both hands open, your left hand extended about six inches past your right. Pointing her arms behind her, Yang fires a round from Ember Celica and launches herself towards you, her right arm cocking back for a devastating punch. As she's about to hit you, you intercept her punch and grab her by her wrist and collar and throw her over your hip. She lands with a painful crash, the wind leaving her lungs.
"What was the point of your guard if you're just going to drop your hands immediately?" You ask in amusement. "I keep telling you, hands up."
"I know, I know." She says frustratedly as she picks herself up.
This time, Yang keeps herself protected as she approaches more slowly. She throws a few punches which your dodge and redirect, weaving in and out of her arms and circling around her. A left jab comes at your face which you smack out of the way with your right hand, pinning her arm to her body. You aim a chop at her neck, but she raises her right arm in front of her face and catches your hand. Releasing her left wrist, your right arm reaches around her head and grabs her chin, twisting her head around and causing her body to turn so that her back is exposed. Trapping her arm behind her back in a painful lock, you kick the back of her knee so she drops to the floor.
"Your hands should never be static." You say in her ear. "Keep them moving, find a limb and trap it. Then attack."
"You're so loving this." She says breathlessly.
You say nothing, simply smiling before releasing her. Hands up, fighting position, another round. Yang's a bit more defensive, having learned that a head on approach will likely result with her on the ground. Testing the waters, she throws a quick jab which you simply push out of the way. She does this a few more times, even throwing in a few kicks, something you'd been adamant she add to her repertoire. As Yang sends another punch at you, you lift her arm out of the way and duck under it, swiftly moving behind her, smacking her ass on the way out.
Yang's jaw drops as she laughs in surprise, standing unmoving, stunned.
"Something wrong?" You ask, her back still to you.
"You're so dead." She laughs.
Turning, Yang runs at you once more. Expecting another flurry of punches, you're caught of guard when she simply tackles you. You could have very easily sidestepped her, but instead allowed her to win, but not without taking her down with you of course. Falling backwards, Yang lands on top of you, her hair falling like a curtain of golden threads. Placing her hands on your chest, you wrap your arms around her waist and pull her down for a kiss.
"Looks like I win." She grins.
"Guess so." You laugh.
She places another quick kiss on your lips before getting off you and helping you to your feet. Brushing yourself off, you wrap an arm around Yang's waist, and she rests her head on your shoulder as the two of you make your way towards the dormitories.
Yang had said that the rest of her team was out for the day, so the two of you were surprised to find not only Ruby, but a black haired, grizzled looking man as well sitting in front of the TV.
"Uncle Qrow?" Yang asks in surprise. "What are you doing here?"
"Come on. Is that any way to treat your favorite uncle?" The man named Qrow asks.
"You're my only uncle." Yang points out.
"Exactly." Qrow responds. "And who do we have here?" He asks, waiting for Yang to introduce you.
"Oh, uh, Uncle Qrow, this is my boyfriend."
"(F/N) (L/N)." You say.
"Boyfriend, huh?" Qrow says, eyeing you over. "Tai know about this?"
"Uh, yeah." Yang says a little uncomfortably, remembering your first encounter with her father. "He definitely knows."
"And he's okay with it?"
"Uh, I don't really know." Yang says truthfully. "I think he is."
"Eh, good enough for me." Reaching to his hip, Qrow produces a silver flask and takes a large swig from it. "Take a seat kid. You can watch me kick your sister's butt."
"Not this time!" Ruby says energetically, eyes glued to the television screen. "I've been practicing. This time it's your butt that gets kicked!"
"We'll see about that." Qrow says.
Unfortunately, Ruby's improvement at the video game was just as poor as Yang's improvement in her sparring lessons, and not even thirty seconds later her character had his head chopped off by Soaring Ninja's sword. Wallowing in despair, Ruby was knocked to the side by her older sister who eagerly took control of the scroll.
"Hey, so what are you doin' here anyway?" Ruby asks. "I thought dad said you'd be away on a mission for like... ever."
"Well a professional huntsman, like myself, is expected to get results as soon as possible." Qrow answers, his eyes on the screen.
"Yeah, I get that." Ruby laughs. "We're pretty much pros too."
"Oh really?" Qrow scoffs.
"Yeah. Read the news sometime." Yang says. "We totally saved Vale while you were gone."
"Funny. Because I heard Vale suffered a Grimm attack after you almost managed to stop a train." Yang scowls both at her Uncle's words and the words "Soaring Ninja Wins" flashing across the screen. "But they don't give out medals for almost."
"They do and they're called silver!" Ruby points out.
You laugh from the background. Quite frankly you were inclined to agree with Qrow.
"Well we helped take down Roman Torchwick." Yang retorts. "He's locked up in Ironwood's ship and crime's been down ever since. That's basically a bounty mission."
"Sure, you're acting like huntresses, but you're still not thinking like one." Qrow says. "You really think four girls and their friends could end all crime in the Kingdom?"
"I mean, I did until you said that." Ruby says, poking the tips of her fingers together.
"Your Uncle's right." You speak up, pushing yourself off the wall that you had been leaning against. "Ever since last semester, since Torchwick was apprehended, all crime just stopped."
"Yeah," Yang says confusedly, not understanding your point, "that's what happens when you put away the biggest crime boss in the Kingdom."
"I hate to disagree with you Yang," You say, causing her to frown at you, "but that's incorrect. After we captured Torchwick, there should have been a power struggle to fill the vacuum he left. All the gang leaders and drug lords should have been fighting over who gets to take the head seat at the table. But we haven't seen any of that. Crime didn't decrease when Torchwick was captured, it plummeted, ceased completely. Something about that isn't right."
"It's nice to see your boyfriend's not just another pretty face." Qrow says. "He's absolutely right. Ever since Roman was nabbed there's been no White Fang activity. You cut off the head of a King Taijitu, but now the second head's callin' the shots. That's what Ironwood can't get through that thick metal head of his."
"You... know the General?" Yang asks.
"Hey, I know everybody to some extent. Remember, you're talkin' to a member of the coolest team to ever graduate Beacon."
From his pocket, Qrow produces an old photograph of a much younger version of himself and Tai, accompanied by two woman you can only assume are Yang and Ruby's mothers. You watch in concern as Yang's vision glosses over, her eyes focused intently on the photo. You kneel next to her and place a hand on her shoulder.
"Yang." You say gently. "Are you okay?"
"Huh?" She asks distractedly, shaking her head. "What? Yeah, I'm fine."
"Anyway." Qrow says, pushing himself onto his feet. "I'm too old to be hangin' around with a bunch of kids. You're gonna cramp my style. Look, just remember that you've still got a long way to go. And don't think for a second that graduating means you're done. Every day out there is worth a week in this place. You two are gonna go far. But only if you keep learning. If you never stop moving forward."
And with that final thought, he exits, leaving Ruby and Yang in a state of quiet contemplation.
