Lumos and Nox are the two incantations for the counteracting charms - the Wand Lighting Charm and the Wand Extinguishing Charm.

Lumos, pronounced as LOO - mos, is used to create a slightly warm light from the tip of the witch or wizard's wand. The first public use was performed by its creator, Levina Monkstanely in 1772 on the premises of the Ministry of Magic. Levina Monkstanley was, admittedly, the creator of the spell but, due to his Instant Darkness Powder (which, for the record, did not work), the German wizard, Garvin Lügner, claimed that he was the one to invent it. This was, of course, incorrect.

The counter spell to Lumos is Nox - the Wand Extinguishing Charm. This was probably invented by Levina Monkstanley around the same time as Lumos to counteract the effects of the spell. Pronounced as NOCK- ss, it has several different connotations - such as the Latin translation for 'night', the name of the Roman goddess of night and a near-cognate of the Greek goddess of night.

Eradication Charm (from last lesson) instances of use.

In 1994, after the appearance of Voldemort's trade mark sign, the Dark Mark (a cloud of smoke in the shape of a skull), the Eradication Charm was erased (or deleted) by the very wizard who cast it (using Harry Potter's wand, of course) - Amos Diggory.
