Chapter 77

I don't think I was that child whose parents considered them a "bad kid." Sure, I may have done some silly things when I was younger as most kids do, but I considered myself a good kid. I would never defy my parents.

Except this one time.

Once we hit the St. Louis County limits, I texted my father to ask which hospital they were in. When he answered, I did not let him know I was twenty minutes away from that hospital. I would show up and see how he would feel.

We pulled up at St. Mercy Hospital parked and rushed to find what room Angel was in.

"I think this is pretty cool being here for your fam," King said as we rode the elevator up. "It's good you're real close to your stepmom like that, and have your father in your corner."

"I would not be here...I mean, at Mizzou with my Angel, I mean, my Mom. And I mean Angel...not my bio mom, who could care less. "

King knew all about my mother and what she was like. He did not know that I sent her money, because then I would have to explain the money Angel gave me. I was not ready to disclose that with King. I was sure it would change nothing with him, yet, I did not feel he needed to know. Money changed people. Not me, but others around when they knew someone had lots of money. I was thankful Gay did not change after I told her.

"Well, I better thank her for guiding you to Mizzou so we could meet." He gave me a big smile and I had to steal a quick kiss before the elevator door opened.

I rushed to find the room because the baby could come any minute and I did not want to miss it. Once we came to the room, I hesitated a bit.

"What's wrong?" King asked me.

"Uh...you might want to stay out here and let me see how they are." I timidly knocked on the door. Angel could be in the throes of pushing out my little sister. I wanted to be here for the birth, but not see the visual of it.

The door swung open and it was my father.

"Yeah, I figured you would come down anyway." My father pulled me in a hug. "Love you, baby girl."

"You're not mad?"

"I would never be mad over this." My father kissed my cheek and then looked over at King. "Hey, what's up my man."

"What's up, Mr. Lawrence." They gave each other a brother-man dap that made me smile. I liked that they got along, or at least my father was not mean to him.

"How's Angel?"

"Come on in and see for yourself. "

"I'll just go wait..."

"Naw, come on in, you're good," my father said to King.

Angel was sitting in her bed, breathing hard, but covered up. She did not look like she was in any pain or anything. I heard giving birth was the worst pain ever.

"Hey step mummy!"

"I'm so glad you're here." Angel reached out her hand for me and I took it. "I'm sorry we said you couldn't be here. You wanted to be here, and here you are. That just means you're going to be the best big sister."

"I hope I'm already that to my other sister and brothers," I said. "I just wanted this one to be special. I want to be the first to see her. Well, outside of you and Daddy."

"I appreciate that." Angel looked over at my father. "Your father and I think you should name your sister."

"What?" I looked to my father, then Angel, then back to my father as he nodded. "Me? I...I...I haven't thought of anything. I thought you already had a name."

"We did," my father said, "But let's see what you come up with."

I had no idea. Naming a whole person. A person that would grow up and possibly hate their name. I loved my name, and could not think of any other name for myself. The only time I questioned it was when my sister and I were together telling people our names. Even then, I still loved the fact that I was named after someone so iconic in the world.

I did not have a celebrity I cared so much about I would name my sister after them. Maybe Beyonce or Rihanna. No, no, just no. Or I loved Chloe and Halle Bailey. I thought about some Black celebrities I loved, like Blackish stars Yara Shahidi and Marsai Martin. They were awesome celebs to admire with cute names.

Except celebrities could disappoint you, or be terrible people in real life. I had no way of knowing that. They were people I would never meet. And I did not look up to them as my role models. The only role model I ever had in my life, that I wanted to become was my stepmother, Angel.

"Mom, Dad, would it be okay if we named her Angelique, because the only person I would ever want my little sister to be like is you, Mom."

"Oh baby, that's so sweet!" Angel said before she started to cry. "Now you have me crying."

"I think it's perfect," my father said, hugging me.

"And I think she waited right for you to come...because...woooo...that contraction hit hard." Angel squeezed my hand. "She's ready to come."

"I'll call the nurse in." My father hit a button on the bed.

I looked to King, forgot he was in the room. "Oh, Mom, this is King, my boyfriend, I wanted you to meet him."

"Great! See me at my worst looking like this."

"No ma'am, you look fine," King said to her.

"Oh, a flatterer, huh?" She wiped tears from her face. "We will have to talk later, right now....oooh! Hook, this really hurts!"

That was my cue to step out. If I witnessed the pain of birth, I may not want any kids. Right now, I wanted a big huge family. Once I was happily married of course.

King and I stepped out of the room and found the waiting area. My aunt Shay was there as well as Jared.

"Ms. Thang, what are you doing here?" Jared asked me before grabbing me in a hug.

"To meet my sister."

"Aw, that's so sweet." Shay hugged me as well. She looked King up and down. "And who is this?"

"My boyfriend, King. King, my aunt Shay and my...let's just call him Uncle Jared."

"Humph," Jared stated. "What happened to that other lil high yellow boy-"

I rolled my eyes at Jared. "Stop it."

"Well, at least you have a type."

Jared was so rude! As if King and Diallo were anything alike.

"Oh, and I am recruited to come to help you move out of your dorm after your last final. Let me know when and where to be and you know Uncle J loves hitting up my old stomping grounds."

I assumed Angel and my father would want to come to help me move, but maybe they would be busy with baby stuff. School was over in less than two weeks.

We sat in the waiting room for what seemed like hours. Really it took only another hour before my father texted me that I could come in first to see my sister.

I was so nervous but for no reason. Soon as I saw my little sister in Angels' arms, I fell in love. She looked like Angel already. Some babies looked weird when first born, like aliens, but Angelique Syna Lawrence looked perfect. Like a little angel.

"Hi baby sister, Angelique," I said to her as I leaned in to look at her. "She's so pretty, Mom. She looks like you."

"And have dimples like you."

"Oh really?" I smiled hard. "Dimple crew, like Daddy and me."

I wanted to stay in that room and watch my little sister all night. Jared, Shay, and King came in also to see her. Everyone gushed over her. I felt like I was the proud mom I took so many pictures of her and sent them to my friends.

I wanted to stay there all day, but King and I both had to get back to school. My first class tomorrow was at ten a.m. and King had a virtual class he needed to be plugged into at nine.

"You're not driving back to school this late," my father said to me.

I looked at my phone. It was a little past midnight. We had plenty of time to hit the road and catch a few Zs, before our classes.

"King's driving, not me."

"No, get some sleep, then the road in the morning."

"But King-"

"The guest room," my father said, then gave King a look. "Is that understood?"

"Yes sir," was all King said as I inwardly groaned.

My father grabbed me in a hug and squeezed me tight. He leaned in and said softly to me, "I like him. He's a good guy. I trust him, and I trust you."

That was good to know. King was a perfect gentleman and the most we did was cuddle in bed, not go all out.

But this was going to be different, having him at my house.

"Are you okay with staying overnight?" I asked him as we headed out. "I mean, we can make it back to school in no time."

"No, it's cool. I did have a long day today and I'd rather be fresh before I hit the road. We can get up early, hit Starbucks, and then roll out."

Interesting turn of events. I only wanted to see my little sister, now my boyfriend was spending the night at my house. Alone, with no one else there but me.

We made it to my house and I gave King a quick tour of the place. I did not realize how big and fancy my house was until I showed it off to someone. I never had visitors over there, well, JuJu and Chantel always called it the fancy house when they visited before. It was a massive house with lots of rooms. King loved the basement, my father's mancave. I told him how Angel had it set up for me and my sister at first.

My brother AJ was staying with my uncle Elmer and my cousins. I showed him my brother's room. And then we went to my room.

"You need something to sleep in? Uh...I don't know if you can fit any of my father's PJs."

My father was a lot bigger than King, but he surely did not want to wear anything of mine.

"Would that be weird if I wore your father's pajamas?"

"No but..." I dug into my dresser and pulled out a Sumner High School t-shirt that was probably as old as both of us. It was my father's that I confiscated years ago to wear to the same high school we both graduated from. "It's my Dad's but mine now. I'll go see if I can find you some shorts."

We both wanted a relaxing shower, so King used the guest bathroom, while I showered in mine. I dressed in winter pajamas I brought home over break. I pulled my hair back in a bun, grabbed a bonnet over my hair, and met King sitting in the entertainment room watching television.

"There's a TV in the guest room if you-"

"No, come sit. Let's hang out."

It was a little weird seeing King in my father's clothes. I was shocked the shorts fit him so well. The shirt looked good on him too. In fact, he looked...sexy. Something about King right now made my heart flutter. I sat on the sofa with him and wrapped my arms around him. He kissed the top of my head, bonnet and all.

"Thanks for being here with me."

"I'm glad you invited me, to be a part of this with your family. I like seeing you with them. I can see the love."

I cuddled my face against his neck. He smelled so good. Whatever soap was in the guest room, he needed to take it with him. "They are my everything."

"You are my everything." King moved my head so he could look into my eyes. I was so weak. Maybe having him alone in my home was not a good idea. I felt things I never felt before.

Maybe it was the moment, I'm not sure, but I wanted King in a different way than hugs and kisses.

"I want to have sex, now, with you."

King bit his bottom lip and slowly shook his head. "Naw." He planted a kiss on my lips. "We'll have time for that one day. Not here, not now. I respect you too much. I respect your father."

"But-"

He rubbed a finger across my lips. "You're beautiful. Inside, outside, everywhere. You are the best thing that has happened to me. You falling down those stairs that day...was the day you fell into my heart. I love you, Rayvn."

What? Did he just say?

A/N: I don't know King...it's too soon!

Other than that, I hope you liked the chapter. I last minute came up with the name Angelique because I had no clue. And giving Rayvn the naming rights, it was only right she named her sister after her idol.
