Chapter 20

My granny sent me to school with so much of her food.

My daddy sent me back with so much of his food.

Angel sent me back with some of her clothes she didn't want. Not that we were the same height, I was five feet four, she was five feet ten inches. That did not stop me from loving everything she gave me. And it was all high-end.

The suite's refrigerator was so packed with all of my things. I was back before either of my roomies, so I hope they did not bring more food. I needed to get rid of it quickly.

I called King instead of texting him.

"Hey, I'm back. What are you doing?"

"Playing my video game. So you made it back safe, fresh. Good for you."

"Shut up," I said with a giggle. "Hey, since you didn't get any home cooking, want to come over and eat some of this food my granny and dad sent back home with me?"

"I'm on my way!" he said quickly.

Whoa! Did I just invite a boy over to my room for the first time? No biggy. King was cool and it didn't mean anything.

I sniffed my underarms. No time to shower again, I put deodorant under my arms, sprayed some body spray over myself, and ran my fingers through my hair. I put on a bit of lipgloss just as there was a knock on the door. King's dorm was ten minutes away and he got here in six. He must have run.

I opened the door and King stood there looking too cute. Why was he so hot? And why did someone this good-looking not have girls all over him? Maybe he did, I had not asked him about that. I did not know his dating history like I did Todd's.

"Come on in. I have barbecue ribs, riblets, pork steaks, bratwurst chicken wings, chicken legs...a whole container of hotdogs. Mac n cheese, mostaccioli, potato salad, deviled eggs that I don't even like...a pineapple upside-down cake, had a chocolate cake, my favorite and my daddy made me one of his homemade pizzas I just have to warm up. Won't be as good from the microwave."

"What the...your family feeding an army?"

King looked over the food I had sitting around the kitchen counter.

"What? Your family doesn't cook a lot for the holiday?"

"Yes but, they never sent me back to school with all of it."

"My granny thinks I'm too skinny. My dad just likes to cook for no reason." I grabbed a rib bone and took a bite even though it was not warmed up. "So good!"

King looked over everything, rubbing his hands together and licking his lips. "Where are the plates?"

King made two plates of food, just to get some of everything. I made a small plate of food since I had already eaten before I started the two-hour drive back. We still did not put a dent in all of the food that I had.

"Girl, who made these ribs? They are better than anything from a restaurant, and I'm from KC, I know good barbecue." King had barbecue sauce all over his mouth as he tore into them.

"My granny."

"Tell her to send the rest, if she has more. Like for real. I will pay."

I giggled at him. I was not going to tell my granny to send some boy more of her food. Then the questions would start.

"You cook like this too?"

"No...well, not barbecue. I don't know much about that. But I can cook some things. Not as good as my granny or daddy. They are like professionals. I help him in the kitchen sometimes and he teaches me things. He loves watching those cooking shows and learning stuff and then trying it."

"Yeah, I know just about the basics. Mom was not much of a cook, I mean, she cooked, but it was fast cook food. Not knocking it. Food is food and I ate it all." King tore into a pork steak. "Now, y'all can't do this better than we do it in K.C."

He ate a bite and then glared at me.

"What?"

"Tell granny I'm moving in with her. This doesn't make any sense how good this is."

I ate a scoop of my potato salad. "I'm glad you like it."

"Thanks for thinking about a brother. I have been eating fast food every day, the cafeterias were closed except one."

"Did no one keep you company? Your friends? Maybe...a girlfriend."

He stopped eating and grinned at me. "I see what you did there. You're asking if I have a girlfriend."

"Huh? No...I mean...like a friend, friend...who happens to be a girl."

"First of all, I'm not that type of guy. I wouldn't be taking you out and hanging with you if I had a shorty on the side. I said I liked you, but I'm respecting your space and taking things slow." He was quiet, watching me, and I didn't know if he was waiting for me to say something, then he spoke again. "Because what I really want is for you to be my girl."

My mouth flew open. I shouldn't be shocked, he has told me several times he liked me, of course, that meant he wanted more than just a simple friendship. I don't know if I was ready for that. When would I be? Others my age had boyfriends, what was the big deal?

"I like you too King."

He scooted his chair a little closer to mine. "Tell me what you are thinking, fresh?"

I was not going to tell him what I was really thinking, so I just told him anything else that popped up in my head. "You're so hot."

"I hope I am more than my looks to you."

"I mean...I didn't mean it like that. Just that...you are really good-looking. Don't you have other girls you like here? I bet your ex-girlfriends were way cooler than me."

"Ex-girlfriend. Just one. We dated for two years in high school. She went to Kansas State, I came here. We tried to make the long-distance thing work. I would go see her, she would come to see me. Then we would just call and text...then there was nothing. It didn't last to Winter Break."

"And you haven't had another girlfriend since?"

"A few dates here or there. I never wanted to jump into something more serious with them."

He probably meant he was doing other things with them, but not in a committed relationship. I knew how to read between the lines. He was a player. How could he not be?

"I'm not trying to make you jump into something you're not ready for, fresh. It's cool." He went back to eating his food. "Know I'm here when you are ready."

The door swung open with Allura, Todd, and Jonathon carrying most of her things.

"He-ey roomie!" Allura said. "Ooooh! Food! Who made all of this?"

"My gran and daddy. Help yourself, there's a lot." I looked over at Todd and smiled at him. Then I remembered right there beside me was King who was trying to take things serious.

Maybe I was the player.

"Hey, Todd. Hey John."

"Is that food offer for us as well?" Jonathon asked, already grabbing a chicken leg.

"Uh, sure."

"Microwave is there boy, don't eat cold chicken," Allura said to him.

"Hey Rave, how was home?" Todd asked, coming to stand by me.

"It was cool. You?"

"I prefer being away, so I won't head home anytime soon again." Todd looked to King, who had not stopped missing a beat eating.

"Oh, Todd, this is my friend." I cringed a little saying that, but it was true, he was a friend, that's all he was right now.

"Yo, name's King." He looked Todd over. "How do you know Rayvn?"

"I tutor her," Todd said, smiling at me. "Oh yeah, friends of Allura from Chicago. We all drove home together."

"And this my babe," Allura said, her arm around Jonathan, all smiles. They must have gotten back together.

"Yo, this food hittin' yo, if there are leftovers after y'all plate, I'm taking some back with me," King said.

After they all made plates of food, they sat over on the sofa and ate. A knock on the door and Donnell and Richie came in. Of course, they helped themselves to the food and went on and on about who had the better barbecue, Kansas City or St. Louis. To me, it was not even close, of course, St. Louis did.

Twyla was not flying back till early tomorrow. There was a bit of food left and I put it all in a container for King to take with him. He grabbed my hand and walked with me over to the door.

"I'm serious about us fresh, and I'm not going to stop trying to make you my girl."

I was all smiles. He was so smooth with it. How could I not want to be Mrs. Hottie Tottie? I mean, if King was my boyfriend, I could brag to my friends and show him off to Angel. He may even pass the daddy vibe. He seemed like he had it together.

Then when I opened the door, there stood Mr. Perfect and little Ms. Perfect sister.

"Heeeey!"

A/N: Rayvn and King are so cute together!! I still don't know who I want to see her with, but I will create some drama.
