Skywalkers Exposed Part 4: Family Reunion
Gabby sat quietly in her room, coloring. Trouble making seemed a lot more tiring when she was intentionally making things difficult for the Jedi; she thought if the Jedi didn't think they could handle taking care of her, maybe they would give her back to her parents. But, so far no luck. So, she decided to take a break from the trouble making and do something soothing.
She was drawing a picture of her with Anakin and Ahsoka saving the Lurmen, the last great adventure they had together before being separated. Gabby wanted to make sure she would always remember the adventures she had with her family, no matter what anyone else said.
Gabby suddenly heard whinnying outside her bedroom door that she recognized. And when the door opened, she immediately smiled for what felt like the first time in forever.
"Carousella! I thought I'd never see you again." Gabby said, hugging her pony as happy tears fell.
Carousella gave Gabby a lot of kisses, feeling happy to see her girl was safe.
"I'm happy to see you too, Gabby. Unfortunately, I can't stay." Carousella said. "But, don't worry. You won't be stuck here much longer."
"Really?" Gabby said, hope in her eyes.
"If the Council makes the right decision," said Carousella. "Your parents miss you a lot. Don't worry. I'm looking after them. Just hang tight."
Gabby picked up the drawing she finished and grew some flowers into a necklace, and she asked Carousella if she could bring those to her parents; she knew her parents wouldn't forget her, but she wanted to make sure they knew she hadn't forgotten them. Carousella wore the necklace and took the rolled up drawing in her mouth before leaving her girl to wait.
After getting clean and dried off, the Jedi Council took some time to separately think about what Carousella and the royals from Mythiria said, and about the legal matter too. They agreed to take another look at the Code and how Anakin's emotional state was more balanced since Gabby came around.
Perhaps the one who was most affected by this was Obi-Wan. He had grown up to become the Jedi Order's golden child, but he did so by ignoring his emotions and following protocol, never just listening to his heart.
Obi-Wan later looked at Gabby as she was taking a nap, and he felt something snap in him. He felt tears come to his eyes as he sat down to think. He'd hurt his best friend/brother and his honorary niece for the sake of Jedi protocol, and neither of them had done anything to hurt anyone. He put good standing with the Jedi over the people he loved, just like he had done with a woman he had fallen in love with years before. Then, he felt some words echo in his mind...
If Gabby or Anakin means anything to any of you, you'll know the right thing to do.
Without even waiting for the Council to call a meeting, Obi-Wan picked Gabby up and wrapped her in a blanket before taking her out of the Temple. Of course, he didn't forget her teddy bear. He knew he was risking a lot by doing this, but the little girl in his arms was more important to him than his seat on the Council or status in the Jedi Order, as well as her father.
"Don't worry, little one." Obi-Wan said quietly to the child. "You'll be home very soon."
Anakin was laying in bed in the dark today; he was too tired to get out of bed after losing so much sleep. His face was stained with tears, his hair was a mess, and Anakin hadn't even been able to eat much while he was worried about his daughter. Padme didn't handle it much better. She could hardly focus at work, she was worried about her husband's health, and she was debating on whether threatening to press charges against the Jedi was the right decision.
Meanwhile, Carousella did what she could to help her girl's parents. In a way, she became practically like one of their kids, just with fur, four legs, wings, and a magical horn. Carousella tried to fill Gabby's place by letting Anakin and/or Padme brush her hair, tuck her under a blanket at night, or cuddling beside them when they sat down. But, a horse was not a little girl, and Carousella wasn't Gabby.
After coming home, Padme tried to get Anakin to get out of bed.
"Ani, please come out of bed." Padme said.
Carousella sniffed Anakin, and snorted in disgust.
"And take a shower," said the musicorn. "You're starting to smell."
"What's it matter?" Anakin said. "The Jedi didn't care about emotions before, they won't care now."
"Who cares what they think?" Carousella said. "Look, I haven't known you that long, Anakin, but I know this isn't you. You're Anakin Skywalker, for crying out loud! You never let anyone tell you what to do or who to be, all for the sake of helping others and doing what's right. Lots of people, especially Gabby, look up to you because of that."
Anakin started to look up a little bit.
"Carousella's right, Ani." Padme said. She got her husband to face her and placed a hand on his cheek. "The man I married wouldn't give up so easily. And he never gave up on the ones he loved before, even when others threatened to take them away an it seemed all hope was gone. Where's my Ani now?"
Anakin thought for a bit, and he decided to get out of bed and fix himself up, starting with taking a shower.
"When I'm clean and dressed, I'm marching right to the Temple and demanding they return our little girl!" Anakin said, determination clear in his voice.
"There's the Anakin we know and love." Carousella smiled.
While Anakin was in the shower, there was a knock at the door, and C-3PO answered it.
"Master Kenobi." said the protocol droid. "Oh! And you've brought the princess home! Thank the maker she is alright."
Padme went downstairs and was surprised to see Obi-Wan carrying Gabby in his arms. And, Gabby was just waking up from her nap.
"Master Kenobi," said Padme. "Obi-Wan."
"Greetings, Senator." Obi-Wan said. "I believe this little one belongs to you and Anakin."
"Mommy!" Gabby exclaimed, now fully awake and reaching for her mother.
Padme took Gabby into her arms and hugged her with a kiss.
"Where's Anakin?" Obi-Wan asked.
"He's in the shower," said Padme.
"Not anymore," said a familiar voice.
Anakin came in, dressed and drying his hair. He didn't look happy to see Obi-Wan.
"What are you doing here?" Anakin asked, frowning.
"I came to bring Gabby home," said Obi-Wan calmly. "And, to tell you I'm sorry."
"More like sorry the Council almost ended up in court." said Anakin.
Obi-Wan sighed and said, "That's fair. But, truthfully Anakin, I am sorry for what happened."
"And that's supposed to just make it all go away?" Anakin said. "My daughter was ripped from my arms, Carousella and I both got bumps on our heads, and I had no idea what my daughter's state was at all for twelve straight days. Have you lost your mind?!"
"Anakin, I understand you're upset-" Obi-Wan said, but was interrupted.
"Upset doesn't even begin to explain how I feel. And of course, you, my master and my best friend, sat there while my daughter and I were separated and did nothing!"
"Anakin, you know I am under constant pressure as a member of the Council."
"Oh, that's your excuse? Pathetic. Some of us actually have things that are more important than a stupid council seat you selfish, entitled, Golden Prince of the Jedi!"
That was when, for what seemed like the first time, Obi-Wan got angry and lost his own control.
"Selfish?!" Obi-Wan gasped. "I've been stuck being the perfect Jedi since I was a child! And you messed things up for me when my Master decided he wanted to teach you instead of helping me complete my training!"
"That wasn't my fault! The Council were the ones who didn't want to train me. And you could've just given me up after Qui-Gon died!"
Gabby looked back and forth as her father and honorary uncle argued.
"Well, I didn't because I was doing it for my master's last wish!" Obi-Wan said.
That was when Anakin and Obi-Wan started shouting at each other and started talking over each other,
Gabby shrieked loudly to get the two men to stop fighting.
"Stop it! Both of you!" Padme exclaimed, catching both the two friends' attention as she comforted her daughter. "You're upsetting Gabby."
Gabby might've been mad at the Jedi for taking her from her father, but that didn't mean she wanted to see Obi-Wan being yelled at, or let her father unleash his anger out on anyone like that.
"Look at you two!" Padme said angrily. "You are both grown men, and you're acting like children! You two need to stop arguing and start acting your ages."
"Yeah!" Gabby intervened. She called Carousella and stood on her back so she could stand at a higher level between her dad and uncle and be more face-to-face with them.
"Daddy, I love you, but you shouldn't yell at Uncle Obi-Wan like that," said Gabby. Then she turned to Obi-Wan. "and Uncle Obi-Wan, you of all people should know better than to start shouting matches with friends. And here both of you are being lectured by an almost three-year-old!"
The guys both sighed, knowing the child was correct. Obi-Wan told Anakin that the Council didn't know he took Gabby back, but he was going back to the Temple to face whatever the Council had for him, but they still had a lot to think about.
"I really do feel guilty about all of this, and I sincerely wish I had done something sooner." Obi-Wan said. "We all should've been more understanding of your situation, Anakin. And of your relationship with your family."
And with that, Obi-Wan left to return to the Temple. Gabby felt sad to see him go, but she was at least glad she was back with her parents. Still, one thing came to mind as she sat at dinner with her parents later.
"Mommy? Daddy? Is it my fault the Jedi kicked Daddy out of the order?" Gabby asked.
Padme and Anakin both froze at that question. And they sat on the couch together.
"No, Gabby." Padme said. "It's not your fault. When things happen between grownups, it's never a child's fault."
"In all honestly, I did break rules," said Anakin. "I knew the risks when I chose to get married and be a father. But it was all worth it. Your existence is the greatest gift we could ever ask for. And sure, I loved being a Jedi, but I love you and our family more."
Anakin picked Gabby up and said, "Speaking of which. I believe tomorrow marks the three-year anniversary of when you came into our lives." He kissed Gabby's cheek.
"You mean my birthday?" Gabby said. "I hadn't really thought of it so much with everything going on."
"Well, tomorrow will be a great day, I'm sure." Anakin smiled. "A special little girl like you deserves to be happy on her special day."
When Gabby's parents put her to bed that night, Gabby had a little trouble sleeping. She sat up in her bed and looked around. Gabby quietly got out of bed, passing the stable, where Carousella slept on a pile of hay, and her parents' room, where Anakin and Padme lay fast asleep. Threepio and R2 were also shut down for the night.
The little girl crept down to the kitchen and found a candle, which she lit with her fire magic. Gabby looked at a clock. She didn't fully know how to tell time yet, but she learned from her Cinderella book that when both hands were pointing up at night, it was midnight, which meant it was the next day. And in this case, it was her birthday.
Gabby closed her eyes and made a wish.
"I wish, I wish with all my heart, more than anything in the Galaxy... that the Jedi Code would be changed to allow Daddy to stay in our family, and so he didn't have to give up being a Jedi, and present and future Jedi can know what it's like to love and have a family."
And she blew out the candle.
