Ashes
Rock crumbles beneath my feet, I'm wide awake
My pencil crumbles to ash in my fingers
I leave dusty prints in the white bowl of the sink
Steam passes through my eyelids when they shut
I can't cool my eyes at this rate, I'll never catch up
Once-fading dark circles under my eyes are lined with ash
Condensation from the steam and the dark flakes mix
My face is burning and growing hotter from the chemical reaction
There's a familiar indentation in my floorboards, in my tiles
It's too hot in here, I need to go, I need to run
It's too hot outside, I need to go, I need to run
The shade of budding leaves melts into molten lava
Asphalt turns sticky on the soles of my tennis shoes
I shouldn't be here, I need to go, I need to run
Comforting winter breezes blow through the neighbourhood
Molten lava chips into dust, as if it was never there
My shoes are glued to the cooling asphalt
I need to go, I need to run, everybody else is taking in a beautiful day
Rock solidifies my feet into the ground, I shouldn't be here
I need to go, I need to run, I need to catch up
My laces turn to ash in my fingers
Leaving no trace as it blends with the dirt beneath everyone's feet
I need to go, I need to run, I need to catch up
I need to go, I need to run, I'll never catch up
