33. Wiped Out

Nivedya departed from his residence with a sincere intention of reaching Nimrit's abode. His primary objective was to extend his heartfelt apology to her, acknowledging the gravity of his previous actions. Additionally, he yearned to confide in her, expressing the intricacies of his emotional turmoil and seeking solace in her understanding presence.
Her words "if there is any, us, after this," reverberated in his ear and he was freaking out. He could not lose her. With shivering hands, he rang her doorbell and Nimrit peeped from the door eye.

The worn-out face of Nivedya melted her heart immediately. She knew he must have realised his mistake and perhaps came to apologise. One of the several things she loved about him was his ability to realise his mistake and accept it. Not all men possessed that quality and she was lucky to get a boy like him. But, what he said to her at school... The bell rang again and Nimrit opened the door for Nivedya.

He exhaled a heavy breath because probably he forgot he had to breathe to live. They kept looking into each other's eyes for minutes until a strong gush of wind blew Nimrit's hair breaking their eye lock.

"May I come in, please." Nivedya requested in a desperate tone and Nimrit opened the gate wider to let him in. She latched the door and was immediately engulfed in a bear hug. "I am sorry. I am so sorry. I got jealous. So-so-so jealous. You told me that one only gets jealous when they know the one they love deserves someone better than them and I know Raghav is any day better than me. Please don't leave me." Nivedya was holding Nimrit tightly in his arms because he feared if he loosened his grip, she will go.

Nimrit had decided to not forgive him but his desperation told her she meant the world to him and he was genuinely sorry. Being jealous is acceptable but the words Nivedya told her in furry were demeaning and she didn't want to sacrifice her self-esteem.

She tried to come out of the bear hug but it was futile. So she requested, "Leave me." Nivedya loosened his grip but didn't leave Nimrit. "It is not the first time you said all those things to me. You said it before and I know you will say it again because the thought is deeply rooted in your heart. If it was just jealousy, I would have still tolerated it, but you questioned a very pure bond that I share with Raghav. Yes, he is better than all the boys, you included." Nimrit's words were daggers that passed through Nivedya's heart.

"Then why did you..." Nivedya stopped abruptly and created a little gap between Nimrit and him. He didn't want a forced relationship as he loved her insanely and wanted the best for her.

Lovers are selfish for the world but selfless to the one they love.

"Because I do not want the best. Just like I do not like the full moon." Nimrit explained her reason. She calmed herself and asked him, "why are you here? Have I not told you that my parents do not like anyone in their absence? Just go. I do not want to talk to you." Nimrit had cried enough and was sure she had no more tears left in her but Nivedya had the talent that could churn her emotions.

Nivedya joined his forehead with Nimrit's and asserted, "Be with the best. You deserve nothing but the best. It's hard for me to let you go but if it's for your good... I think you should..."

Nimrit pushed Nivedya and in a teary voice commanded, "Just leave my house right now!"

"Nimrit, I am serious. I..."

"LEAVE NOW! Or do you want me to throw you out?" Nimrit almost shouted and with heavy steps, Nivedya walked out of her house. He lost his love. His first love. Nimrit shut the door in his face. She couldn't believe she loved a moron like him. She told him she wanted him but his needle was stuck on Raghav being the best. For an instance, she thought of telling him Raghav was her brother but she couldn't. It was a secret and she had to hide it under all circumstances.

'The pain of a failed first love is worse than the first fuck.'

Nivedya returned home with a broken heart and while he was looking at the blurred picture of Nimrit behind the colourful macaroons that Raghav posted days back a notification refreshed his feed and a new picture posted by Raghav made him shocked.

'Finally' was the caption of a picture of Raghav holding the hand of his classmate Jyoti, intimately. Nivedya saw some other posts of Raghav and in most of them, Raghav and Jyoti stood close or together. He called his best gossip source, Janice, to confirm. She told him Raghav and Jyoti were together from grade seven but today they declared it on social media.

Nivedya felt cheated. He thought Nimrit used him as a rebound because Raghav was already reserved. He saw the time and knew it wasn't the right time to talk to Nimrit so he waited for the school the next day.

"I won't forgive you Nimrit." He slept with the thought and the following morning when he got up he was raging from within but his smile was deceptive like that of a child who had mischief planned on his mind.

He saw Nimrit walk into the class with triple-A trailing behind her with concern. He hated his friends who were more concerned for the cheater girl than him. No one bothered to ask him how he was but Nimrit was being sympathised with. She sat on her seat and Nivedya sat next to her making her amazed.

"Hey... how you doin?" Nivedya mimicked 'Joey from Friends' and Nimrit furrowed her brows in confusion. She wasn't expecting Nivedya to behave like before. She didn't reply and concentrated on Maths.

During the lunch break, Collin and Shawn asked Nivedya how he was. "What will happen to me? I am fine. Never better."

Nivedya fisted his palm to hide his anger and Collin guessed his friend was going to blast. He asked him in different ways about what happened with Nimrit but he skipped answering his questions so, their friends decided to make them talk.

Nivedya didn't have his scene in the drama rehearsal so he was free and Nimrit was dragged out of the library. "You both... talk and sort out the matter. We can't see you like that. You have an hour before the next class and we will make sure no one comes here." Aashna locked Nimrit and Nivedya in the school canteen's storeroom.

Nimrit and Nivedya stood there quietly. Their protests went unheard as their friends were hell-bent on uniting them. After ten minutes of complete silence, Nimrit finally spoke, "Do you want to talk?"

"Talk? No!" Nivedya's reply made Nimrit gulp her saliva.

She didn't want to lose him. "Did he give up already? Did he really think Raghav was better than him? "

She was debating in her mind when suddenly Nivedya closed the gap between them and held her forearms. "Why did you do this to me, Huh? For revenge? For whatever differences, we had in the starting? If Raghav was better than me then you should have chosen him. Oh! Wait! How could you? He didn't choose you. He chose Jyoti. You knew he couldn't be with you so you chose your next best option... Me! Wow! So lucky I am. Guess what, I don't play rebound, on the field or off the field."

"Why did you do this to me? Huh? For revenge? For whatever differences, we had in the starting? I felt alive with you but you killed me and my feelings brutally. Raghav was better than you but I chose you. Oh! Wait! How could I? I could because I... I..." the word 'love' was in Nimrit's mouth but refused to come out.

She looked into Nivedya's eyes which were burning in anger and resentment. She touched Nivedya's cheek with love and said softly, "You were not a rebound. You were everything that scored points on my list. I am sorry I failed to make you realise how special you were to me," Nimrit smiled and came to a corner where there was no light.

Their friends won't open the door for another half an hour and she couldn't stand next to Nivedya. They needed breathing space to sink into the situation and their feelings.

Teenage lovers, most of the time find fault in themselves rather than analyzing the situation. Nimrit also felt maybe it was her fault that Nivedya lacked trust in their bond. She thought her love story would be perfect but it ended before it even started. To top it off, she told her father about it. If she told him, it was over, already, he would think bad about Nivedya and she didn't want that.

She put herself in Nivedya's place and realised it wasn't his fault completely. She was hiding a big secret about herself from him which he deserved to know but she couldn't tell him. Her tears fell freely when memories of her past flashed in front of her eyes. God was harsh with her but she never complained because she got an angel-like father, in exchange for cruelty.

"Come," Nivedya's hoarse voice scared her and she held the rack for support. She wiped her tears without Nivedya noticing them. "Umm... Can we pretend everything is sorted? Else these people would keep putting us in situations like this." Nivedya battled between his heart and mind before adding, "But I can't just behave like things have got normal between us. Because there is no "us"."

Nimrit nodded her head and just then the door opened. Their friends walked in with hope and Nimrit gave a thumbs up. They shouted "yay" and formed a group hug. Everyone was happy and Nimrit realised she may not have opted for the drama class but she was a brilliant actress.

They came back to their class and were silent all the while. Nimrit had made it clear to their friends to give them time to get normal and they respected their decision. Nivedya was zoned out in all the classes. He was thinking about the events that happened. He was happy till yesterday and the boat of love he was sitting with Nimrit was sailing smoothly. Suddenly the gush of secrets and lies brought a storm and he knew their boat was on the verge of sinking.

At the dispersal assembly, Nivedya realised he won't see Nimrit until the next day. He walked up to her but Raghav beat him to it. He reached where Nimrit was standing and they started to talk. Nivedya hid behind the closest tree to overhear their conversation. It was incorrect but lovers know no rules.

"Barkha and I knew since the start that you and Nivi were endgame," Raghav told Nimrit and Nivedya got angrier as he had never spoken to Nimrit's best friend but Raghav had.

"You have no idea Raghav what I felt for him and what I feel for him." Nimrit asserted with a longing in her eyes.

"Oh! Ho! My choti is totally whipped by her dancing partner." Raghav addressed Nimrit as 'choti' and that alarmed Nivedya. Arya also addressed him as 'Chotu' the other day and he knew in most Indian households younger siblings were addressed by that nickname.

Nimrit smiled at his statement making Nivedya's heart beat fast in anticipation of her answer, "I am charmed since the day I collided with the most alluring whirlwind on the wheels."
