Chapter 18..
Dravon POV..
As soon as I saw Treakle walk out the council building, I booked it to her room. She looked so...so scared. Perhaps it was the idea of meeting her mom. Maybe it's the fact that she's going on a mission with me, seeing as she apparently hates me.
I should have known it was inevitable Treakle would come with me. You can't refuse a mission. I wonder if she even tried to decline.
With my back pressed against her door, I slid to the floor. How am I going to keep Treakle alive on this mission? While saving her mom at the same time. That's too many Kemp girls. I really wish her dad could help me. Mr. Rech is the one who initiated me as a level five. It truly was an honor for him to then help me train for my first mission. He was the first fatherly spy figure I had. But when I requested this mission, I had no idea his daughter would be working alongside me.
The council is being reckless assigning her to this. It's her family, her mother, we're rescuing. She has an emotional attachment to the targets which will hinder her performance. The rebel spies will use that knowledge against her. I suspect Annabel will look like she went through hell so that Treakle will break down and lose her rational stability. She could get captured...or the rebel spies will be the heartless killers that they are and murder Treak right in front of her mother. They just don't care.
I heard footsteps coming down the hall and looked up. As soon as we made eye contact Treakle stopped. She wiped tears from her eye and I jumped up.
"Are you alright?" I ran to her and touched her arm gently. At first she flinched away, but then slowly (and I mean slowly) wrapped her arms around my waist and cried into my chest. I gently patted her back. This isn't something I was used to.
"I'm not alright." She mumbled hugging herself closer to me. "Do you know what my mission is?"
"Yes, we're going to rescue your mother." I hoped I sounded soothing as I patted her hair down.
"Do you know about the other part?" she pulled away sniffling.
"Uhm...the other part?"
A small smile played upon her lips for a split second, and then it disappeared. Replaced by mortification as she looked at herself wrapped around me. She quickly backed three feet away.
"Treakle, what's wrong? Is there another part to the mission?" I asked making the gap between us smaller. Council never told me about another part...
"I was just wondering...you know if there was another part that they didn't tell me." She didn't meet my eyes. 1st sign someone is obviously lying to you: they can't look at you. Council must've given Treakle an extra assignment...
"Is there something they didn't tell me?" I asked her gently, putting my finger under her chin so I could meet her eyes.
"No, no, not that I know of, I mean I don't know what they told you but they told me what they told you. I mean if I knew what they told you I'm assuming..." she trailed off. 2nd sign someone's obviously lying to you: they talk excessively.
"Shut up!" I whispered emphasizing the "u's". I really don't have time for all this sobbing and whatnot, it's really pushing the limited supply of patience I have.
"What," she asked wiping a stray tear.
"All that matters is that we both know what we have to do. We have two weeks until we leave-"
"One week," she corrected looking guilty, wiping away the last of her tears.
"Oh fuck. That's not good."
"Why," she asked tilting her head like she always does.
"Because I-" wait. "I don't need to explain myself to you."
"Well we are partners now," she moved really close to me and rubbed her hand across my chest. A shiver ran up my spine. An irritating shiver that is. I pushed her away gently.
"Well unless you tell me that other part of the mission, we'll just be partners who have secrets." I tapped her nose as I walked by and winked.
She turned around and stomped her foot, "You're such a jerk!"
"And damn proud!" I called back.
"You're unbelievable!" She called walking towards me.
I turned to face her, "You're annoying."
"You're a pompous ass!"
"You're a genetic freeloader!"
"You're a conniving low-life!"
"You're an inexperienced neophyte!"
"You're an arrogant manipulator!"
"You're testing my patience."
"You're...hey...that's not an insult. I thought we were playing a game." She pouted crossing her arms.
I smirked at her, "Oh don't worry, we are playing a game. It's called the Spy game. And the objective is to keep Dravon happy so he doesn't let you die on our mission."
"Why would I die on the mission? What if you die?" she cocked her hip out as she went into defense mode.
I scoffed, "I won't die. I'm Dravon Stewart."
"Don't be so cocky Dravon. Confidence actually killed the cat, not curiosity."
"Good thing I'm a dog then," I winked at her trying to copy some of my past disguises' flirty ways. Unsuccessfully.
Her mouth puckered in disgust, "Ugh, you still didn't answer my question. Why do I need you to save me from death?" she stared at me with eyes so scrutinizing I felt like she was peeking into my soul.
"A) because, we're rescuing your mother. The mother you haven't seen since you were a baby. There'll be an emotional connection and whatnot.
B) Your only a level two. No offence but do you know what you're supposed to do if you get caught? Do you know what to do if the target gets recaptured? You're inexperienced.
C) You don't remember much. You trust all the wrong people. And
D) you-"
"So what you're saying is I'm going to fuck up?" she cut me off.
"Basically." I leaned against the wall.
"So since you have my death planned out so nicely, how do you plan on altering that reality," she pretty much growled that at me. Feisty.
"Well, I haven't figured that out yet. But Treak," I got closer to her and grabbed her arms gently, gazing into her eyes, "I promise you, nothing will hurt you whenever I'm around. I won't let you die on this mission." I linked our pinkies, "I pinkie promise."
She looked up and smiled at me, "I wish... I wish I could trust you." A single tear rolled down her cheek before she ran to her dorm, slamming the door behind her.
What's up her butt?
