Chapter 15..
Treakle POV..
I listened to his muffled footsteps run away.
Wow.
Dravon Stewart is one weird boy.
"Treakle? Is that you?"
I looked behind me and saw a tall shadow cautiously walking towards me.
Jareth.
We met during my second week here, in the hallways. I was walking to my dorm and I bumped into someone.
____
"Oh, sorry, sorry." I mumbled pushing past him, not bothering to see who it was.
"Maybe if you paid attention to where you were going things like this wouldn't happen!" I looked back as he pointed to his shirt; there was a large coffee stain. Whoops.
"Oh I'm sure it'll come out. If you like I'll buy you a new one the next time I go on a mission," my words were sugar coated; hoping he didn't know my level. My focus was on the cup that this person threw on the floor. Litter bug.
"I doubt they'd let any level two go on a mission Treakle."
I looked up shocked. I'm still pretty new here, not a lot of people know me by my name. Most just refer to me as "the girl whose parents have been AWOL for a year and a half".
He must've noticed the bewildered expression I wore. His hand outreached towards me, "Jareth Anakin."
I grabbed it and shook it, "Treakle Kemp."
"Oh I know, everyone knows who you are."
"Yeah, I'm a celebrity "I said sarcastically.
He laughed "Well I know you a little more than you think."
I tilted my head, "How so?"
"Well your parents are, hopefully still, living legends. They're famous not just for the MIA thing, but for their accomplishments. Nobody knows exactly how many lives they've saved, individually. Together, man, it reaches millions. Your parents are my idols!"
My mind faltered. No one had ever told me that they idolized my parents. I just knew that everyone knew about them. I felt proud and confused at the same time.
"Well, uh, I guess you didn't know all that..." he said rubbing the back of his head.
"No, I didn't. I-"
"We should hang out some time." He blurted out before I could finish.
"Uh, okay." I replied a little stunned "What is there to do here?"
I thought of everything entertainment related. They had a single theater screen which showed movies that haven't even been advertised in Hollywood yet. There was also an arcade, but everyone was so skilled at games they were all boring. Not to mention it was too easy to rewire the game so you always win. Other than those two places there was a pool, but it was impossible to use it for leisure since everyone else used it for getting in shape for missions.
"I'll show you tonight." He leaned against the wall, taking a quick glance at his ruined shirt. "I'm going to need to change..." he mumbled.
"What time?"
"Let's just say sometime after eleven."
"I have classes! That's way too late!"
"Oh please, I know you used to stay up till two in the morning talking to a certain boy on school nights."
"How...how do you know that...?" I knew he was referring to Tyler. My old Tyler.
"Because I am just awesome like that" he smirked walking away.
"Eleven?" I called to him unsure. That's about the time I started doing my homework.
I took his thumbs up and wink as a yes.
____
A hand reaches out and touches my shoulder, although I watched him walk up, I still jumped.
"Hey Treak."
Smiles painted our lips. We've become pretty close friends, he wants more, but I know all about his womanizing.
"Was there someone out here with you?" he asked slowly spinning me around.
Should I tell him? I mean, I just met this Dravon guy. Why should I lie to my closest friend for him? But then again...he is known to be the best level five in history. A guy like that knows what he's talking about.
"Oh it was just my friend, Luria; she saw me in the hallway and just had to tell me all about her new crush." My lie came smoothly, something I wasn't proud of right now.
"Ah, am I privy to that information?" we were dancing by now, slowly swaying back and forth.
"He's Dravon." I blurted before I could think of a better lie.
"Dravon?" he said, stopping our dance so we were just standing in front of each other.
...§...
"Don't tell him about us" Dravon's words came back to me.
...§...
"Uh, yeah. I think he's like a level four or something," I lied to see if Jareth actually knew Dravon.
"Level five." He corrected proving he knew the guy. "Why would she like him of all people? Luria could do so much better." His tone was full of resentment.
"Well I was thinking of meeting this Dravon guy, to see what he's like. You know?"
"Don't." he snarled at me. I took two steps back, frightened by how much hatred was in just one word. Realization filled his eyes, "Oh Treak I'm sorry, I've had a bad past with Dravon Stewart is all. He's bad news. Tell Luria to stay away from him, if she knows what's good for herself."
"Am I privy to that story?" I used his line against him, batting my eyes and touching his abs.
"No." Jareth grabbed my hands and placed them at my sides, "Please don't go near Dravon. I gotta go."
He gave me a hug and ran in the direction he came. I lost him in the shadows.
So let's recap.
A) A complete stranger has (basically) told me my new best friend is hiding something life or death important.
B) My best friend has (literally) told me a complete stranger is a bad person.
C) I must have my mind messed up because I don't know who to trust.
I hate spies.
********************
I awoke feeling extremely groggy. Most of my night was spent starring at my ceiling.
The only thing I dreamt about was highly disturbing. I dreamt my dad was with me. "Grandma" had shown me pictures of them so I knew what they looked like, but this guy looked nothing like the pictures. He was tanner than I expected, and had a load of gruffness. When I asked why he was in my dorm room he just said, "Don't trust him."
"Trust who...sir?" even in my dream I found it hard to believe he was my dad.
"Do not double cross the other." He restated walking towards my window.
"Wait, sir, who are you talking about?" I ran towards him, but it was a dream, so it took me like forever.
"If you disregard my warning, one shall die." He opened my window, and jumped.
"No!! Wait daddy no!" I got to the window and watched him fall. When he would've made impact with the floor, a big cloud of smoke erupted from an unknown area. It clouded everything, nothing was visible and then all I could hear was a fuzzy, "Treakle I'm coming! Runaway from him, now!" as if it was on a radio.
At that moment a bullet fired and everything was silent other than some woman sobbing. The smoke disappeared and I found myself lying in my bed, awake. I didn't even remember opening my eyes. It was as if my dream collided with reality.
"I officially hate sleeping." I murmured to myself getting ready for my day. I didn't have any classes today so I decided to find Dravon and talk to him. Find out what's so bad about this level five.
However, when I went to the dorm administrator's office the lady behind the desk said that there was not a Dravon Stewart enrolled here. She put up a good disguise but she blinked one too many times to be telling the truth. "Darla" was officially on my hit list.
As I was walking to the food court to see if Dravon was a sociable person, I thought about my dream. My dad had warned me not to trust some guy. Ever since my dream about having parents who were spies (Chapter 1), I've never doubted the reality behind them. But who shouldn't I trust? Was it chance I'd have the dream the day I met Dravon? Was the guy he was talking about was Dravon? And who shouldn't I double cross?
Sadly, whenever I'm deep in thought my eyes don't pay attention to anything but the floor. I bumped into to someone, having the strange sense of déjà vu.
"Sorry, sorry." I walked passed, trying not to show my face.
"Treakle."
Crap. It's him. His voice is so...distinct. "Dravon, we need to talk." I looked up at him and a wide smile spread across his face. I could literally hear his mind say "finally."
Just as he opened his mouth, he closed it again, his whole body went rigged. His eyes glazed over and he balled his hands into fists. He opened his mouth again, only the movements were strained and forced.
"No, I don't know what time it is, why don't you turn around and look at the big clock behind you. Stupid level two's." he loudly mumbled the last part then walked the way he was coming from.
Did I just get dissed? Or was he hinting at something?
I turned behind me and looked at the clock. It was ten o'clock in the morning. Nothing too significant about that. Then my eyes focused on something underneath the clock. Jareth was standing there sending me death glares. I looked closer and realized he was giving Dravon the death glare.
As Jareth realized I saw him, he walked away. Just like that. No explanation or anything. I turned back to where Dravon had walked off only to find him standing in front of me. My face collided with his chest, and I just realized how tall he was, at least a good six or seven inches.
"We haven't got much time before Jareth comes back to check on you, meet me in the martial arts studio in twenty minutes, he has to help a teacher at that time so that gives us ten minutes to explain things." He spoke fast and left a gap for me to respond.
My mind went into shock disabling my mouth muscles. I just stared at him and slowly nodded to show I understood.
"Good, if he asks what you're going there for just tell him you left your earrings or something. Anything guys wouldn't want to help you find. He cannot come with you; I need you to be alone..." he gazed behind me at the clock, "Fuck. Fifteen minutes." He reminded and walked into a random room that lined the hallways.
Seconds after he left, Jareth showed up walking from the direction Dravon had originally came from, then went back to, and then came back from. (Trust me I'm confused too.)
"Hey Treak, aren't you meant to be in martial arts?"
Crap! He's onto me!
"No, I don't have any classes today. But I think I left my earrings in the studio yesterday, so I'll have to go back and get them after I eat some breakfast. What are your plans for today?"
"Cut the bullshit Treakle, what did Dravon talk to you about?"
"Is that Dravon?" I kept up my act from last night. He just nodded curtly, so I carried on, "Oh well, I asked him the time and he pointed out the clock behind me, that's it."
"Since when do you need to know what time it is?" he crossed his arms and stared at me with a look that would make a turtle scream for forgiveness.
"Well Master Wilson closes the studio for his mid-morning break, so I wanted to know the time so that I didn't have to wait for him."
Jareth's expression softened a teeny, tiny bit, "I believe you, but please, stay away from Dravon. He's known for, er, I shouldn't tell you this." He scratched the back of his head.
"I want to know." I said forcefully.
"No Treak, it's...its really bad."
"Tell me or I won't meet you at 2 in the morning anymore."
He sighed, "Okay well, Dravon Stewart is sorta known for...doing anything to maintain his best level five status."
"Okay and? Determination is a good thing." My hip cocked out, for some reason I started doing that a lot lately when I defended people. For some reason I started defending people a lot lately.
"No, Treak, what I mean is he did anything necessary. As in he might...make sure they never do anything better than him, again."
"Like cripple them?"
Jareth gave an exasperated sigh, but it's hardly my fault he's beating around the bush! "No! Kill, Treakle, he killed spies who got too good."
I gasped really loud and really long. Which caused me to sorta choke on air. "NO! Who would do that?! That's cruel and evil and inhumane and evil!"
He looked at his shoes, "Yeah, it's sad I know. I just don't want to see you get hurt. Everybody knows you're going to be a level five in no time. You'll become a legend like your parents someday too. So please, don't go anywhere near him."
I hugged him tightly, "Don't worry, I won't." I whispered and meant it.
