12. Letters from a birdie.

Kim Taehyung:

Taehyung didn't realise that he was still standing there, just in case she turned around again, until he heard the bell of a cycle as someone rode past.

He blinked.

It wasn't very late, although taking the bus right now would be faster than walking all the way over. As he weighed his options, the pocket of his coat buzzed.

"Yeobseyo?"

"Hyung, eodisseoyo?"

"Ah, Jungukk-ah, I'm at the bookstore. Are you off work?"

"Ne. I'll come get you. I'm just a street away."

"Arasso."

He looked down at the books in his hand. Among the books back at the house, there were hardly any that had outer covers like these. They had all looked so....ordinary and usual.

He used to wonder what made Namjoon Hyung want to buy them, just upon first look.

Then ofcourse, hyung always knew which book he wanted before going to buy them. Hyung had always encouraged him to try them, but the books at home had never tickled his curiosity, to make him want to pick them up.

But these books, with their colours and art right out front, as if baring a piece of themselves, so that you knew what you're getting into. These books made him wonder.

He looked out towards the road again, in the direction that she had gone.

It was empty.

A familiar car horn sounded, making Taehyung turn the other way. Jungkook gave him a two finger salute, from behind the wheel. Waving back, Taehyung walked towards the car.

"Alone, Hyung? When you mentioned the bookstore, I figured Namjoon hyung was with you."

"Ani, I just dropped by."

Taehyung clicked the seat belt in place, and was about to lay the books in the middle glove compartment, but chose against it, and placed them back on his lap.

"And I wasn't exactly alone. I had company."

Tae glanced over at an extremely curious looking Jungkook.

"Oh? Nugu?"

"Ah, just a girl I met-"

"A girl?! Where did you even meet her? You hardly leave the house!"

"We met at the bookstore, today!" Taehyung hastened to complete his sentences before Jungkook's assumptions went too far.

"Woah...here? Jinja? Yeppo?"

Taehyung just stared out the windshield, as if considering the question. Jungkook took several glances at him to see if anything on his face would give away his thoughts.

"Well, erm, she helped me find a book! I've been wanting to gift Namjoonie hyung one, and I didn't know where to start looking. She helped me with it though."

"Does she work there?"

"Ani, from what I gathered she's a doctor. She was a customer there."

"Huh, and she helped you find a book, all by herself?"

"I asked her to! There weren't any other customers there and Han-ssi seemed to really like her, so I went with his intuition. He wasn't wrong."

Jungkook was paying way more attention to Taehyung's words than he did to the road.

"About her being likeable?" Taehyung could detect the hints of a smile in Jungkook's words and merely shrugged.

He tapped his fingers on the books, then traced the embossed illustrations that were on the book of fairytales she had gifted him. Well, given, but he wanted to think of it as a gift.

"Jungkook-ah, do you believe in the saying  'Never judge a book by its cover'?"

Jungkook took a moment and looked away from the road, and at Taehyung with a questioning raise of his eyebrows.

He shrugged dismissively.

"Well, I haven't really sat staring at many outer covers of books to actually ponder over such a phrase."

He peeked over at the books on Taehyung's lap.

"Are those the books she found for you?"

"Yep."

"Wah! Looks like she knows her books, just like Namjoonie hyung. Was she an AAMI? How did she react when she saw you?"

"She seemed, fine, I guess."

"It must have been cause you weren't her bias. She sounds more like Joonie hyung's sort."

Taehyung shot him a glare, which he pretended to not notice.

But that got Taehyung thinking. When Han-ssi mentioned hyung's name, she had immediately looked behind them, like she knew who she was looking for. She had appeared, composed, other than the occasional awkwardness, although it seemed blended with her personality. Maybe she wasn't a fan as such, but then he remembered her ringtone and chuckled, unintentionally.

"Mwo? What's got you smiling like that, Hyung?!" Jungkook had forgotten about driving, and had almost turned his torso to look over at Taehyung.

"YAH!!! JUNGUKK-AH!!! Eyes on the road!" Jungkook made a show out of slowly turning back into his seat, on purpose to irk his hyung.

The boy's excitement was insane, and so Taehyung simply voiced his doubts out loud.

"Did you really go to work today? Or did you lie to the others and stay back at home? You seem way too pumped up for someone who's been working 10 hours straight."

Jungkook rolled his tongue on the inside of his cheek and gave Taehyung a knowing look. He was trying to flip the conversation and Jungkook decided to play along. Well, for the time being.

"Ofcourse, I did. I'm a responsible adult, on whose buff shoulders lie an entire company's progress. Besides, I think work is gonna get pretty exciting starting today." He flashed a smirk in Taehyung's direction.

"Oh? Why is that?" The nonchalance sounded so proffesional, but Jungkook knew better.

He cleared his throat dramatically.

"More will be revealed, when uri Taehyung-ssi gives us the rest of the juice about his eventful book-hunting evening."

The blank expression Taehyung gave him in response only widened the smirk on Jungkook's face.

"Arasso, arasso! Here's what! Let's do Jinx, hyung. Kol?"

"Oh~ kol!"

"Hana, Dul, Set!"

Jungkook held out his fingers one by one, signalling the countdown. At the last and third one, the both of them yelled out their respective answers to each other's questions.

"I recruited a new, awesome co-worker!"

"She must be an AAMI, and I kinda felt a connection!"

Taehyung's eyes nearly popped out at his own words, but before he could think up any sort of explanation, Jungkook pounced.

"A connection, you say? Omo, and you only just met her? Hyung, you know that means-"

"Shut up, Kookie! It was- it was the first word that came to my mind!"

"And the only word that matters!"

"Well....well what about you then! A co worker worth mentioning has got to be someone who left a very remarkable first impression on you! Have you started challenging her yet? Is that what's gotten you all fired up?"

"If you must know-"

Their bickering was paused by the sound of Jungkook's phone ringing.

"Oh, it's Jimin hyung."

He waved the screen, so that Taehyung could see, and then took the call.

"Nae, hyung-nim!"

Taehyung watched as his playful expression dissolved. Jungkook's eyes got a bit wide, and then looked over at Taehyung, his eyes fixating on his coat pocket. He nodded his chin at the pocket, and Taehyung slid his hands in, taking out his phone.

"Mianhae, hyung. He's with me now, nae. I guess he put it on silent when-"

Taehyung shook his head vigorously so that Jungkook wouldn't let slip about where he'd been. Not that he didn't trust Jimin, but he preferred his surprises to be surprising to everyone else as well and not just the reciever of his gifts. Jungkook just knew ways to annoy answers out of him.

"Uh... when he went over to the pet shop! Ah! Yes, pet shop! You know how, noisy it can be."

Taehyung dropped his head into his hands, hearing Jungkook's moronic cover-up story. Jimin probably didn't buy it, because he saw Jungkook scrunching up his face soon after he ended that unbelievable story.

Taehyung checked his phone, and sure enough, there were 5 missed calls from Jimin. He'd forgotten to put off the silent mode and turned the volume back on, to prevent any more trouble.

"Nae, hyung. I'll tell him. We're almost home."

He cut the call and slid his phone into the mobile holder, heaving a deep sigh.

"Is everything okay? Why did he call me so many times? What did he say?"

Jungkook looked over, his mouth set in an unbreachable line, along with his eyebrows which gave him an over all grave look.

"Mwo~?!"

"He wanted yogurt. And I drank the last of the yogurt, a few nights back. He called you to get some, because he couldn't leave Tan alone at home."

Taehyung huffed in relief. Jimin!

"You girls, and your drama."

Jungkook burst out laughing, but collected himself together quickly.

"Hyung, tomorrow, remind me to refill the fridge with his favourite flavour. Please!"

"Arasso~!" He ruffled the maknae's hair and told him to concentrate on his driving.

The silence was comfortable and void, when suddenly a distinguished notification sounded, causing Taehyung to jump up in his seat. He went to retrieve his phone in haste.

"Oh ho ho, somebody got another letter. What is it about this time, hyung?"

Taehyung ignored the boy and unlocked his phone, his fingers going right up to the notification panel to click on the twitter notification that popped up.

The overly familiar red seal made his heart race.

Every. Single. Time.

The post started to load, and Taehyung's eyes remain glued to the screen.

"She's been writing a lot about dreams these days, hasn't she? All the letters sounded, dreamy."

Taehyung couldn't suppress the snicker that left him upon hearing Jungkook's plain but appropriate comment.

Everything about his birdie was dreamy. That's what he called her. His birdie, who brought him letters. Every day, without fail.

And for some odd and silly reason, they cheered him up immensely.

He had only been following since the past year, but the posts were dated way back to almost 2 years.

He willed his phone screen to respond to his commands and bring up the post soon. The red seal shone at him, the words in them making him smile, taking him far away from here.

#LetterstoTaeTae.

Every single letter had that hashtag to it. Making them stand out.

He swiped at the page again, impatience getting the better of him.

And finally, his newest letter popped up.

Dear Kim Taehyung,

my eyes were open tonight.
I blinked several times.
Even pinched myself to make sure.
But yes, I was wide awake.
And you were still here.
You were never just a dream."
